Holtskee Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Wow! Thanks for pointing these out...must have been amazing to visit WDW in those first few years.
CGM Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 Love it!! The monorail station looked like it was straight out of Thunderbirds and the way that MK was presented made it look more like Patriot Land than Disney Land. I can never watch the Hall of the Presidents clip without thinking of the simpsons version. I found it hilarious when the Jungle Cruise guide pulled out a gun from nowhere and shot the hippo! You certainly wouldn't get that nowerdays in a theme park!
speedracer Posted July 12, 2007 Author Posted July 12, 2007 ^ don't know about WDW, but DL has thankfully resumed their hippo shootout, after not doing so for years thanks to the PC police. Not sure how (after decades of doing so) popping a fake cap gun in the direction of an animatronic was all of a sudden wrong, but am personally glad the original show element is back.
BrownStreak Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 They played this special on the Disney Channel back in the 80's- I have it on VHS tape...of course this was back when the Disney Channel aired classic Disney programming and had no commericals.
moinab Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Those were great! My first visit was in 1978, so Tomorrowland was more developed than it appears to be in these videos, with the addition of Space Mountain, but that's pretty much how I remember it. BTW, they still use the gun on Jungle Cruise in MK, but I think it may depend on the CM. Out of the many times I've been on it over the past few years, I think I've seen it used about 50% of the time.

You can see why it was banned though. It doesn't really put out the best conservation message particuarly with Animal Kingdom not far away. I'm surprised that it's been allowed to return even at Disneyland
arrowfanman Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 ^ They dont fire at the hippoes. They now fire into the air, as "warning shots". -Jahan
AlmereStars Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 first thing the speaker says: it's a vacationresort where guest may stay how long they would like... lol I don't think anyone has the money for that! the videos are really cool!
Chrissie Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Omg, those are soooo awesome!! I love it!! Did anyone notice the characters you never see anymore?? Like Thumper and Dumbo!! And the crystal palace as an elegant dining place?? Amazing!! Chrissie "Wants to go back in time to 1970s Disney" Stevenson
BrownStreak Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 You know its interesting by 1971 DL was filled with E-Ticket Rides, yet you look at the old WDW images and not only is Tomorrowland mostly empty with only a ride, a movie, and a washing machine (MTM), but Frontierland had not a single ride and just the 'Bears Show. Oddly Adventureland is pretty much the same today as it was then- Jungle Cruise, Tiki, Tree. So in 1971 you basically had Liberty Square, Fantasyland, & Adventureland as they are today (minus subs) and little else and yet the park looks packed!
moofygirl Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Man I feel old. My first visit was in 1976. I was about 3 almost 4. I remember the Bicentennial Parade. Those massive heads on the parade characters were a bit scary. Also, my one key memory at that early age was riding the Jungle Cruise. The tiger with the glowing eyes absolutely fascinated me. Back then it was rare to see a lot of characters out and about the way they are now. There wasn't much to do in Frontierland. I remember BTTMR being build. I wish I had pictures of the mountain's skeleton. I've been going to WDW almost every year since then. Some of the changes the park has make are great, but I do lament some of the things they've removed or changed entirely.

I'm surprised that it's been allowed to return even at Disneyland Have you ever been on Jungle Cruise? It's all very tongue-in-cheek. Nobody with half a brain is going to take away any kind of conservation message from it. And they do still shoot the cap gun at the very fake animatronic hippos at MK.

Disneypix has several Big Thunder Mountain construction photos: www.disneypix.com/MagicKingdom/Frontierland/BTMC/MagicKingdom-FLBTMC.htm I also found this pic of Big Thunder from the train before Splash Mountain. That entire area use to be a big open space - in a way it kind of looked like a real southwest vista: www.disneypix.com/MagicKingdom/Frontierland/1981c/FL1281-04.htm
