Homer Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 Alright, it seems that since the official computer topic thread above doesn't get that much reply from members, heres my situation. I was just browsing TN, as usual during my procrastinated state of not studying for my finals, until suddenly, Firefox closes, all of the icons and toolbar disappear and my computer shuts down, just like it usually does whenever you do it manually. It was sudden, I was just browsing the forum and my computer crashed. I booted it up again shortly after and went on, as normal, when Windows was finally booted up, suddenly 2 termination notices pop-up, both DLL files. After the two notices, the computer shuts itself down. Turned the comp on again, except this time the computer spontaneously flickered on and off and I had to unplug it. For those of you who are nerdy enough to know PC's alot, WTF happened to my comp? A few things before answering: -I update daily, AVG 7.0 updated, Windows SP 2 updated, etc. -I haven't downloaded anything suspicious, nor did I give out my IP address if it turns out to be a hack attack on my comp. -And for you RCT nerds, sad to say, Funzones World's of Wonder is scrapped if my computer is screwed.
coaster1 Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 Sounds like anything from virus to hard drive crash. The DLL files it was missing you recall what they were exactly. The powering on and off also may be associated to the motherboard having an issue as in it got flashed, cpu issues, ram issues, etc. It's really hard to determine without looking and seeing it first hand. Right now it sounds mainly like a Hard Drive crash, it may be savable. If the platters are damaged tho, it won't be unless you pay like $10,000 for a professional company to save the drive. If it's a software crash, as in Windows, you just need to reformat .. you can save data on the drive but you'll need another machine with Windows and/or Linux if it gets bad.
Homer Posted May 25, 2007 Author Posted May 25, 2007 BUMP My computer is doing the same thing again. It keeps shutting itself down at random times. I reinstalled power management and it worked for a while, but now it is back to square one. I think it is something to do with the power supply. Still not sure though, Help?
spaceace12 Posted May 25, 2007 Posted May 25, 2007 super uber old thread. Might as well make anew one.
Homer Posted May 25, 2007 Author Posted May 25, 2007 ^You are as helpful as customer service. And by that, not very helpful.
ParkTrips Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 super uber old thread. Might as well make anew one. Actually, searching and bumping an older, similar thread is a lot better than just creating a new thread. This is part of the TPR posting guidelines! However, I have to admit I laughed at "sticky" and computer
TheBannedKid Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 Yes sounds like possible power supply issues...always get more than you need and name brand...
WillMontu Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 There could also be some kind of heat related issue in there too. Dust out the fans (especially the CPU), and make sure there isn't too much dust buildup.
Homer Posted May 27, 2007 Author Posted May 27, 2007 Will, I dusted the computer a few weeks ago. It helped run the computer for like, a week. Cracked it open yesterday, it is relatively dust free. I seriously think it is the power supply though.
Homer Posted May 29, 2007 Author Posted May 29, 2007 Man, this sucks, I think my computer has bit the big one. Dusted it and it is dust free now. The green light is still on in the power supply, may be indicating it is still good? The computer only stays on for less than five seconds before shutting itself down. Other suggestions I hear of: some kinda worm infected my computer, I need a new fan. Ugh, I miss my computer, haven't been able to use it since last week and posting from the Nintendo Wii is a challenge in itself.
spaceace12 Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 yeah, it sounds software. If you got a good bootable xp disk, I would try that first. If it still does it, I would try swapping out the video card if you have another one.
lapseofreason Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 My old computer did that, shutting itself off randomly, pretty much always when my husband or I were in the middle of something important. Anyways, right around that time we also got hacked with adware, spyware, a virus that killed our ENTIRE system, etc. We were able to reinstall Windows and get it running... it worked for about a week, then it started shutting off again, then the hacker found us again.... In the end we just had to get a new machine. When it was randomly shutting down, we ran multiple virus scans and nothing came up, which might have led to us thinking it was the fan/power supply thing. I know I didn't really give any advice but I wanted to share my story; it sounded like the same thing that happened to me. I hope you don't have to get a new machine.
Homer Posted May 30, 2007 Author Posted May 30, 2007 After messing around in the BIOS, my computer is fixed for the time being, did another virus, adware, and malicious tool scan. Nothing found, guess I am safe for now... ...I hope this comp doesn't crap out on me again.
spaminacan11 Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 This happened to my computer about two years ago. It would just turn off. The more you turned it back on, the less time it remained running. We thought it was a virus, so we took it to Best Buy to get it cleaned up. They cleaned it up and about two weeks later, it started again. This time, we took it to another guy to get it fixed. He got it and said that nothing went wrong when he had it, so he gave it back after doing some clean up. Then it did it AGAIN, so we took it back to him, and again nothing happened when he had it, but he reinstalled windows and deleted everything. We got it back and it was fine...for a week or two, then of course it did it yet AGAIN. This time, we had the guy come over and see it actually turn off, and he said power supply. He changed it, and nothing has been wrong with it since. I suggest that you get your power supply checked before you delete everything or something..
