Fallen Heretic Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Apologies if this is already up, I did try a search. I heard this from another forum, and have found it reported on several sites. Im just curious as to what any other Europeans think about this. In a move to cut costs, Sony are not going to include the dedicated chips responsible for the backwards compatability on PAL PS3s. Instead they will be going for software emulation. So initially, fewer PS2 games will be playable on PAL machines. Of course, the launch price will stay the same. Im in two minds about this. The part of me that thinks the games industry hates Europe, says that software emulation never works quite as well as good hardware emulation, and somehow we are being cheated. Again. The other part of me says that although software emulation will be less than ideal at first, future upgrades should imporve performance will be easier to impliment and obtain. I wasnt planning on getting a PS3 early on anyway, but Im curious how other people feel about this.
jaap Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 This only proves that the big companies laugh their asses off over us dumb europeans! We pay the highest price tag in the world for the PS3 and as a bonus we get slimmed down version. I will just stick whith my DS right now and maybe next year when things settle I will look into a next gen console. Haven't played a WII yet but if it is as much fun as the DS that is the one I am going for.
Masked_Maverick Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Congratulations to Sony for making the PS3 even more worthless and crappy than it already is.
IceDragon Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Congratulations to Sony for making the PS3 even more worthless and crappy than it already is. Sony=Vekoma of the gaming industry :\
Masked_Maverick Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 ^ True but I have had more fun on Vekomas than I have with the PS3
BorisTF Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Im in two minds about this. The part of me that thinks the games industry hates Europe, says that software emulation never works quite as well as good hardware emulation, and somehow we are being cheated. Again. No, just Sony hates Europe. At least MS & Nintendo try to release consoles within a few weeks of each other, and other than PAL issues etc there is no difference in the general hardware. And yes, all the little European Sony fanboys are being cheated, and they deserve it for being so ignorant as to the wonders of Wii60.
verticalzero Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 Europe always gets a bad deal from "Sony". England's price is £425. I'll be keeping my PS2 till it dies, but in truth the PS3 should be fully backward compatable with all PS2 games. No-one should have 2 machines in their house when 1 PS3 can do the whole lot. I have a PSP / DS Lite / N64 (Ultra 64 sounds better), 2 x PS2 (both on Broadband) a Gamecube and a PC (Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 is played most nights) to keep me happy. I have no intrest with PS3 / Wii or 360 at this time.
verticalzero Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 Taken from PS3 Centre Website: http://www.ps3center.net/story-276.html?PHPSESSID=fd52ae684b9f22d554268fc652241e6f why is Sony still calling them PAL, since HDMI renders the whole concept of PAL, NTSC and Secam redundant? The new PlayStation 3 will not feature the PlayStation 2’s Emotion Engine chip and will rely completely on the software to emulate PS2 backwards compatibility. This means that European gamers will have a far more limited backwards compatibility list compared to the and Japanese PlayStation 3 systems. This is some bad news for European gamers as it basically means that they had to wait out the delay of the console and now will have a system that will have less features than the and North American versions since the software cannot run as many games as the built in Emotion Engine chip. The announcement came from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe that the PlayStation 3 will ship to Europe, Middle East, Africa, and with a “new hardware specification.” "PS3 is first and foremost a system that excels in playing games specifically designed to exploit the power and potential of the PS3 system," said David Reeves, President of SCEE. "Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology."
Fallen Heretic Posted March 1, 2007 Author Posted March 1, 2007 why is Sony still calling them PAL, since HDMI renders the whole concept of PAL, NTSC and Secam redundant? I imagine its because they still have to retain distinct compatibility for PAL sources, such as DVDs and old PS2 games (well, some of them), etc, rather than refering to the output format. Which for many people will still be a PAL TV anyway.
SLUSHIE Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 I don't get what the big deal is. The PS2 had PS1 hardware in it in the beginning, but was removed after they figured out how to emulate it. Obviously the same thing is happening with the PS3. I don't give a crap for backwards compatibility. Everyone and their mother already has a PS2 so why not just use that.
