Most Under-rated Dark Ride
slicknixon replied to stratamaster120's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'd have to say comparing the difference between Coldplay and Radiohead in relation to the difference between two dark rides, it's more like a portable trailer-mounted Ghost Train compared to Disney's Haunted Mansion, with Radiohead being more like the Haunted Mansion. If there is any inspiration from Radiohead involved in Coldplay's music, it sure isn't apparent. -

Haunted Barrel Works, Centreville Amusement Park, Toronto Islands, ON Stillwalk Manor, Casino Pier, Seaside Heights, NJ Whacky Shack, Waldameer, Erie, PA (borderline underrated) The Underground, Adventureland, Des Moines, IA (never been to Adventureland but POVs of this ride have intrigued me to say that it's a possible gem) -

Monster Mansion looks absolutely amazing! If only Six Flags would open one dark ride of this quality at every park maybe they could save themselves. -

^ I will accept that excuse as long as we get a nice Trimpers PTR some time.. Also, +300 points for living so close to The Haunted House, Aladdin's Lamp, and Pirate's Cove. +3,000 more points are now up for shots of the Aladdin's Lamp interior -

Now you must explain why you didn't go to Trimpers while in OC. UPDATE: Just now read the caption about free tickets at Jolly Roger at the Pier. But I still say why no Trimpers? -

Hair-time freaking mania!!! Especially that first one of the Comet. Great job! -
It's too bad there are licensing issues with said games, because I would love me some Genesis Aladdin, Capcom SNES Aladdin, and maybe even Lion King re-releases on Virtual Console. Make it happen Robb my man!! By the way has anyone ever considered you a jack-of-all-trades before? Coasters and games? I mean leave some awesome lives for the rest of us, amirite people? Seriously though, I wish my life was half as awesome as working on games and riding roller coasters for a living. You've got it made my friend. Dare I say the American dream?

All my work with the Disney animators paid off! --Robb No way!! I LOVED Aladdin on Genesis when I was a kid. I still play through it every once in a while and own 3 copies of the cartridge as well as The Lion King Genesis & SNES carts. I think I like the gameplay of the SNES version of Aladdin better but the animation is definitely superior in the Genesis version. As far as Lion King goes, I remember thinking when it came out that the sprite animation was something special especially the quick cut-scenes that were borderline FMV which was easily appreciated on a cartridge-based system in those days. I especially liked the one after Simba's Exile with the hyenas yelling "You ever come back, WE'LL KILL YA" Oh and the animation on the Hakuna Matata boss... Such a great game with wonderful art direction.

As already stated, the crowds are thicker at Hershey. But at Dorney the crowds can get undesirable quick as I've noticed that 3 or 4 buses can mean a significant increase in high-strung city teens who WILL sit next to you on Talon or Hydra without a care. While I don't mind sitting next to strangers on rides, these type are usually the "scream stupid crap at each other from different cars and stick their arms out until they are right up against yours and thinking nothing of it" crowd. In my experiences at Dorney, this has happened every visit. Hershey's predominantly family crowd doesn't usually produce as many "undesirables". As far as good food goes, Hershey has the Tudor Grill, Central PA Kosher Mart (excellent falafel), and Country Grill/Freeman's BBQ for the best dining options. For decent affordable dining there's also Craftbarn Kitchen, Famiglia Pizza, Decades and Minetown Restaurant but keep in mind the food is extremely average at these places. I suggest going for the few extra bucks for the first three mentioned. Oh, also the Gourmet Grille that replaced Wok & Roll a couple years ago is okay but no place will ever be as good as the old San Gieorgio Pasta House. Dorney doesn't have much of a dining selection at all. There's a Coasters Drive-In and The Gameday Grille but other than that, your typical and terrible CF counter-service places are abundant. I suggest Coasters which is kind of like a counter service Johnny Rockets but definitely a step or two below in terms of food quality and atmosphere. You can still get a great burger and fries there. There's also a Subway in Wildwater Kingdom if you're not feeling adventurous.

Knoebels Discussion Thread
slicknixon replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
It's good to see that the Motorboats are in operation. Whether or not they will be open once the coaster starts going up is another story, but I can imagine they would work around it because they're one of the biggest family favorites at the park. Not to mention, when was the last time you went to Knoebels and found that any of your favorite rides were closed? As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure the entire park was in full operation every time I've been there, which is nearing the 20th time at least. -

So then I'm assuming that the motor boats are closed during construction? If so, then it's a shame because I'm taking my 2 year old daughter next friday and was looking forward to doing that one with her. -
Here's to the Failure of Six Flags Inc.
slicknixon replied to slicknixon's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I suppose i was suggesting that the good parks with high attendance would probably be bought up by a good company and would be pulling in money from the success of the park as a SF park. Also we're talking about quite a few parks here. With any improvements from new ownership, any former-SF park could generate even higher attendance and make even more money than before and then have the money to buy another or even build a new park and start a new chain creating more competition for other companies and forcing more money to be overall focused on spending for the parks and not focused on general income for the company. This could ultimately spark a growth in the industry as higher standards are set, and more patrons find more reasons that they like returning to these parks. -

Look, I don't hate the company really I don't. I'm simply pointing out the possibilities of good things coming out of the company's demise. Also, sure general opinion doesn't mean everyone's opinion but I don't know many people or read any reviews for that matter that state a preference for a Six Flags park over any other chain company's parks, even Cedar Fair. I could have said: Face it Six Freaks!!! Your company is dying! HAHAHAHA But it's great to hear people defend their favorite parks. This is something I can appreciate believe me. I wish I felt the same about these parks but alas, I do not. -

I've been to SFGA six times, SFA eight times, and both SFNE and SFOG once so i guess you could say that I've had my fair share of Six Flags experiences. My least favorite would have to be SFA. That park is a freaking disgrace. Also, I've heard from MANY regular SFGA-goers that they have been so disappointed in operations in the last couple years that they no longer visit the park. Go to Trip Advisor or any public opinion site once and read some SF reviews and compare them with the rest of the country's park reviews and you will start to see a pattern in general opinion of the company. Sure, people have been saying they dislike some things about SF for years but now judgement day has finally come, and people are starting to wonder about the fate of the company more and more into the 2009 season. -
First of all, before you go crying about how your small hometown SF park is in jeopardy of disappearing forever if the company does in fact go bankrupt, please consider some of the following: 1. Six Flags Inc. is a staple of bad business and in recent years has really given the theme park industry a bad image to the general public. 2. The loyal SF goer's annual season passes each year in combination with how much they charge a patron for a day at one of their parks can accumulate into a small fortune. Multiply that times a million and you've got an a$$load of cash. 3. The company doesn't know how to make good use of their money. The company has always had this policy that new rides come first, and park quality and maintainence come second which in turn takes you back to number 1. (and possible bankruptcy) 4. The disappearance of extra cost "line jumping" services. Once the company has failed, the industry will start to question the company's wrongdoings, and will discover upon simple research such as say Tripadvisor or ANYONE WHO GOES TO PARKS that flash passes and q-bots are the ways of satan and his plan to ruin the image of theme parks by pissing people off about being ripped off and having their standard admission rate raped as people continuously jack your queue time up because they have the extra entitlement of having paid more than you, which also in turn takes you back to number 1. If this happened you may see more parks with a free service such as Fastpass so that everyone is happy. 5. The good parks would probably be bought by good companies. I could definitely see SFGA and MM being bought up by companies like Parque Reunidos and in turn changing a new leaf and becoming a great park, something it may never had the chance to be as long as it was run by SF. I could imagine that one day security guards would actually have a "no tolerance" policy for bad behavior in the parks, something that most quality parks already have. Once the hoodlums and undesirables no longer find freedom in their "right outside of a big city" park, with time they could maybe disappear from the theme park world for good. 6. Most importantly, the sale of the parks to different companies could easily spark a nation-wide growth in the industry. The company who bought SFGA might make the park so successful they they decide to open another and another starting an all new park chain ten times better than the original SF chain ever was. I could go on and on. I really am hoping for the company's demise for these and many other reasons. Feel free to criticize or agree on any of the above statements but i can assure you that i stand by every word. Oh, and no more Mr. Six. What can i say i always hated that mascot with a passion.

So who out there has had dreams when they're sleeping about a park that doesn't exist except in your imagination, and then after you wake up you keep building ideas and imagining this insanely awesome park that you would build if you were the head of a big company that just ventured into the theme park business? I've been having this recurring dream about a resort right outside of Gettysburg that has a large hotel, Keystone Park, a park themed to the history of PA parks including recreations of old defunct attractions like Voyage to the Center of the Earth from Dorney and Le Cachot & Gold Rusher from Kennywood. Also, a wooden out-and-back racer, a modern Scenic Railway, classic flat rides like the (covered) Caterpillar, a classic-style Chute-the-Chutes and a Big walkthrough funhouse with rotating wheel.. a complete recreation of the former Fantasyland park in Gettysburg. oh, and a section of the park completely dedicated to the Luna Parks of the 1910s. Would also be a place that rides of importance go when they retire from other PA parks. Across from Keystone Park is a modern theme park called Steingarten. It's theme is Germany and PA Dutch heritage. For some reason in my dream, this popular German restaurant called Hofbrauhaus in Gettysburg IRL is actually located in the entrance section of Steingarten in my dream, and it's a huge 2 floor buffet serving everything from Schnitzel and Weisswurst to Bratkartoffeln and Flammkuchen. I imagine this strange cuckoo clock themed section with a heavily themed wild mouse called Clockenspiel and a spinning dark ride through a giant cuckoo clock with those little hammer dudes coming out of the facade and hitting a giant bell every 3 minutes. Then there's the Oktoberfest Gardens section with a ripoff of Festhaus at BGE and lots of other places to enjoy Das Bier. There's even a recreation of the Allotria funhouse from Williams Grove that's on my avatar. Also, a bavaria section with a B&M Floorless that travels through a Bavarian town. There are also little dark rides scattered throughout the park like The Brementown Musicians, which is based on the 1930s Ub Iwerks cartoon with scenes from the cartoon with the same music and everything and it's awesome. I could go on and on with more of my ideas. That's what i love about dreams, you can take one idea from them and then use IRL ideas to combine with the ultimate idea, at least in your opinion. It would be great to hear from other people who elaborate their thoughts on a dream park. I know I'm not the only one. We could collectively come up with some really cool ideas here.

The Parks of Pennsylvania
slicknixon replied to Movieguy's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Ok, guess I should have said PA is the best traditional park state. I do agree that Florida has been at the top for quite a long time.. so much that I sometimes consider the rest of the country "babylon". I think it's also safe to say that both states are on two totally different sides of the theme park fence. Take both state's Haunted Mansions for example. Both are excellent examples of dark rides. But could you really say that one is better than the other? On one side you have a near flawless representation of a classic pretzel-type dark ride and on the other you have a high-tech modern masterpiece. Two different ends of the spectrum. Overall, I'd have to say FL and PA are both the greatest park states each in their own. -

slicknixon replied to Movieguy's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Our home is the land of traditionalism when it comes to just about everything. As Pennsylvanians we cherish our roots and traditions. We eat PA Dutch and German food regularly because it is part of our heritage. We often times find ourselves saying things like "Let me get that awhile" and "The beer is all". But above all, we love our sizable traditional selection of parks. Where I'm from, the majority of people don't consider a summer complete without a trip to Hersheypark AND Knoebels. You can't visit one without visiting the other. They are the places we've gone every year since our childhoods and since they are part of our tradition, we demand that something special of our parks. As much as i love to travel, i must say that Kennywood, Knoebels, and Hersheypark make up the "PA 3" or in other words, IMO these parks make PA the greatest theme park state in the country. Oh, and that's not even considering the smaller parks like Idlewild and Waldameer which are also parks you won't find any place like anywhere. I urge anyone who hasn't already to come visit our great parks. You haven't truly gone back in time until you've visited Knoebels, the greatest traditional park in the world. 'Nuff said. -
oh, well wasn't it originally going to be a WiiWare game? I remember originally hearing about it on wiiware-world.com back at the beginning of the year if i remember correctly. That's cool that it's going to be retail though. I would totally pay top dollar for the game because I am a huge fan of the original. Of course, I've never even technically played through the entire game seeing as I was always tempted to use the Root Beer Rocket to jump ahead at the beginning. Would be nice to have a VC release of the original as well. I have no idea who owns the license to the original game but couldn't you like pitch a promotional deal to get the original released near the same time as the new game? Maybe David Crane himself owns the rights? I'd imagine you probably know better than i do.
