nannerdw Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 I just bought a JVC Mini DV camcorder, and I want to transfer my videos on to the computer. I don't have a firewire port, so do I have to have one installed into my computer? Would I be able to put it in myself, or should I have it professionally put in? I have a Dell computer, and I do not see any way of taking it apart. I think Dell designed it so that only they could open it up. I didn't know anything about the Mini DV tapes or firewire cable when I bought the camera. I actually just thought that the video would be recorded onto an SD card, and I could put it on my computer with a USB cable. This is turing out to be a lot different than I expected, and I just don't get it!
DenDen Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Sounds like you'd be better off having someone install a firewire port for you. All computers can be taken apart, it's just knowing each company's trick. (And some of them, like dell, like to trick DIY'ers into either paying some professional, or breaking their systems to pay dell more to fix it.) Dennis "hates retail computers"
Angry_Gumball Posted April 23, 2006 Posted April 23, 2006 Actually, on some of the Dell's I've seen, instead of screws to remove the side panel, there's this little sliding lever thingy. All you have to do is push it up and slide the panel back. Actually, I liked the way Dell has done the way of removing the panel to get inside of the computer. If you have that little lever button thingy, or even the giant thumb-screws, try sliding it up and pull back the panel or unscrewing the single or however many thumbscrews there are (provided you don't have those stupid warranty void labels). It's a peice of cake to install after that. Just plug it into an open PCI slot and you're set. Hope that helps!

nannerdw Posted April 24, 2006 Author Posted April 24, 2006 Thanks. I found out how to open my computer (just a little lever in the back). I see exactly where to put in the card, so I went ahead and bought this. It's a good deal, since it comes with the card, cable, and video editing software.
