Did anyone else see Mountain Creek Water Park on the news just now? There was an accident on one of the tube slides. I'm not sure which one... they didn't say. They said someone got stuck in a dark tunnel on one of the slides, then it got backed up as people were coming. Then, they said the water started rising. They reported a few injuries, I don't believe anything too serious... though I could be wrong. Thought I would just let everyone know.

Here's an article from NewJersey.com. The trauma of being stuck in an enclosed area sounds more harmful than the actual injuries.

The Gauley ride is a holdover from the Action Park days.

The Record

VERNON — Five people were taken to area hospitals with scrapes and bruises Wednesday afternoon after an accident on a water ride at the Mountain Creek amusement park, an official there said.

The park's president, Bill Benneyan, said the riders suffered minor injuries after the tubes they were riding in ran into one another and became stuck for a short time at the mouth of a tunnel. He said the accident occurred at 4:15 p.m. and park employees got everyone off the ride in about 20 minutes.

The ride, named the Gauley after a West Virginia river, was shut down until state officials can inspect it, which typically happens within 24 hours of an accident, Benneyan said. He said the park notified the state Division of Consumer Affairs about the accident, which he said was a first for that ride.

While the injuries were not serious, he said it was “very frightening” for the riders because they were “stuck and unable to get out.”

The Gauley has been operating for 30 years, Benneyan said, which means it would have been in operation when the park was owned by a different company and called Action Park. Mountain Creek, a summer water park and a winter ski resort, was opened by a company that bought the site from Action Park’s parent company after that park closed in 1997.

Before it closed, Action Park had filed for bankruptcy protection, citing financial difficulties that included owing $3.8 million to people who sued for personal injuries. Four people who were injured in an after-hours toboggan accident on a ski slope won a $1.3 million judgment.

An Action Park patron from Fair Lawn was electrocuted in 1982 while on a kayak ride. State investigators determined that the ride, although properly installed and maintained, had an electrical problem that could have caused injury.
