Alright, I'm so sorry for the two new threads lately relating to Computer Problems, but I don't know what I ever would have done had this place not solved my other PC problems.

So I captured 3 DV tapes worth of stuff, and their currently saved on my Computer as 3 Files, One is 10.3 GB 10.7 GB 5 GB. I need to get them off of my Computer Hard Drive and onto my external hard drive. My external Drive says it has 130 GB of free space but yet when I try and copy those 3 files it says I need to delete stuff to copy them. I know that my external HD has more then enough space to hold them but I don't get why its not letting me move them. Any Ideas????

Thanks a lot,

Chris

there are 2 major methods of copying files. (You want to copy them, not move them.) Which ever method you are using, try the other method...

method 1:Drag-n-drop onto drive

method 2: highlight your file, right click, select COPY, then go to your external drive, right click, then paste.

They do the same thing, but they do it via different ways. Also, only do one file at a time. This sounds like you may have a resource issue.

Just a suggestion, Hope this helps you out.

Yea none of those worked, apparently what I found out was that my external hard drive can ony take an avi file up to a certain size, so I will have to re-edit my videos so that I can get them onto my external drive. Or I could re-capture in segments, but I think that will take longer...

WTF!

What type of External do you have. I have a couple of 10+Gig vids on my Maxtor 200.

That's because the AVI format was only designed for a 1GIG max size. It's been updated since via individual software vendors, but if the drive itself is relying on windows resources and drivers, I'm not sure M$ have updated it themselves, this may be the "root" of the problem. (No puns intended... LOL)

That happened to me also.

I have Seagate external and i tried copying my captured files to it for back up and it says i don't have enough space to do so.

WTF?!?!

Well, yeah, there is enough space but it just won't happen.

Sounds like they may be right about the file size specification on AVI's.

Yea I also have a SeaGate...So it sounds like that it the problem. So I'm guessing what DenDen said is the problem. Question is, is it fixable?

Ok sorry for the double post but I did a lot of researching this morning, and this is a common problem it seems like, and there are some ways around it. I think it has to do with what type of file system your hard drive is using if its FAT32 on a Win XP System there is a 4GB Avi limit, but if you use a NTFS system it is unlimited for Avi's.

To fix it I read you can use this program called Vitural Dub, to segment your files so that you can save them on the Seagate drive. I havn't tried it yet, I will when I get home so I'll post it later if it works.

I guess you could always change the file system but I don't know if thats a good idea, as I have to use my external HD on Mac's and Pc's.
