Homer Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 Alright, I am now pissed off. First off, read the title. Then here is the story; I just came back from dinner and suddenly my computer keeps turning itself on and off. I suspect its a virus, but I have been keeping my guards up to date, didn't download anything suspicious. Then when I come back, I turned it off manually and decided to boot my computer up to normal. Everything seemed fine, I decided to do a virus scan for my comp. Then a minute later, whammo, my computer flickers on and off again. So, question is, can anybody solve my problem. Because, I know theres always some tech geek here (no offense).
coasterdude5 Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 I'm horrible with computers but it might be the power getting to the computer?
waterviper Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 (As we all stand around in the back alley drinkin beer) Yup.... yup.....mmhmm........yup.....yup....mmhmm.....yup.....sure sounds like a virus to me......yup......mmhm.....yup....... Ok also maybe you have a bad a loose connection somewhere like a loose plug to the outlet or on your computer.
Token Yankee Guy Posted February 20, 2006 Posted February 20, 2006 It's your power supply probably. My friend Rick has been having similar problems with his computer restarting by itself.
Homer Posted February 20, 2006 Author Posted February 20, 2006 I think I can assume its the power supply. For one, I was gone for an hour, so my computer was on idle. I thought it may be spyware, so I did a quick AdAware scan and got a few items. I have yet to do a virus scan, yet nothing fishy happening. Still, I should do something about the power supply.
WillMontu Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 I'm thinking that the power supply might not have enough power to power everything. Get a 300 watt as a minimum, 400+ is preferred. Keep in mind that fast video chipsets, fast CPU's, and hard drives will eat up a bit of power.
FlyingScooter Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 Are any of you other appliances acting odd? I'm wondering if you had a power spike. I had a synthisizer scram like that. Took it to a tech and he replaced the power unit. That fixed the problem. That synth cost over 1500.00 US, so forking over 50 bucks was no problem.
trustkill22 Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Another thing to check is that is the room your computer is in, is it hot? Or if it is a older computer crack it open and maybe get some compressed air and blow out the dust. We had a older computer that eventually just died on us and then come back on every once in a while and we took it apart to find the fan was just killed with dust like there was so much dust it caused the fan to stop working so we got a new one and she purred like the old cougar she is.
memphish Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I would suspect power supply, motherboard, or bad RAM. Maybe if you posted some specifics on your computer Age, powersupply wattage and manufacturer if you know it, motherboard model and maker.
