Frade Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Hello people! How are you? Well, I am scared about all this thing of the Hurricane. It is rumored that tomorrow at 11, they will announce if we will have to evacuate the university & the state for our safety. So if that happens, I can not go back to Mexico because I need a special permission to go out of the country because of my student visa. So I will buy a plane ticket wherever I can be safe for this weekend. Does anyone can receive me if I am evacuated? Thanks Later I will apreciate your help if needed.
Thrasher Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Just hop in a friends car and head north for a day or two. Plan on sleeping in a car, as garunteed all hotels will be booked in Atlanta and surrounding areas. If you dont already have a plane ticket, they will be expensive and hard to find.
Kroger8 Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 The Greenville SC area is a good area to go as it is not very well known, and wont be nearly as crowded as Atlanta or other areas, you can fly into GSP, or drive to Atlanta, and then take I-85 up, there are many hotels in the area.
robbalvey Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Just come and stay the hotel with us! It won't be a problem. Elissa has been through many Florida Hurricanes including Andrew and she says "not to worry" -Robb
Angry_Gumball Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 I can definitely tell you that plane tickets will be nearly impossible to get a hold of. Our neighbors had a family emergency back east this last summer and we spent the entire day searching for open flights to get them to Vermont by the following day on the 4th of July weekend. Just find a buddy and camp out somewhere away from the hurricane area.
DenDen Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Instead of spending the money on a plane, just get a hotel room. For the most part, pretty much all the hotels are acceptable hurricane evacuation places. (The university should provide transortation to the nearest public evac shelter, another option, that is, if the university isn't the designated shelter itself.) looking at a map right now, just go west of Interstate 95, and you should be fine. You're on the east coast, (same as me) so we'll have heavy storms at first, but once the eye makes landfall, it will die off a bit, and won't get the worst of it at all. Just don't be a fool, DO NOT go outside during the storm, or in the dark if the power is out. Down-powerlines are your biggest invisible enemy, and the creatures are your 2nd.
AllisonY2K Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 and if you stay and ride out the storm, by all means, MAKE A VIDEO! (like DenDen did)
DenDen Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 ^Trust me, I will. I have to work Saturday night, so I'm taking the video camera with me.
robbalvey Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Just landed in Florida. Clear skies at the moment. Everything seems normal. You'd have no idea there's a cat. 5 on the way. The vibe here is "meh, no big deal." And that means more to me than ANY news report! --Robb "Off to IOA now!" Alvey
Frade Posted October 20, 2005 Author Posted October 20, 2005 Ok Robb, Thanks for that So, if the University evacautes, I will call you to meet ok Thanks See you real soon. LOl
TConwell Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Having been through lots of these, just get out of town if told to leave. Plan on (as said above) about 2-3 days away (take a cooler with some food and stuff) and chill out in car -- a plane ticket is the LAST thing you want right now as with any ticket -- they are EXPENSIVE when you buy last minute. Within about 24 hours of landfall you should be able to begin making plans to come back. Seriously, take the warning to leave if told to do so (I have several friends in New Orleans and their eye witness testimony is no joke) -- Now, having ridden out Ivan in Mobile this year, I would say just be safe man. Your conscience is your best gage here, but if you see the gov and mayor leaving town ... I would take that as a pretty good indication of what you should be doing. However, take Robb up on the offer, eh? I mean, at least there will be laughter as you drown to death! (Just kidding Robb ...) ~TJ
WillMontu Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 Since you're on the east coast, she will probably weaken a little bit after making landfall before she hits you. I rode out two storms in Gainesville last year and by the time the storms came close to use, they were down to tropical storm strength.
