The plan was to go to holiday world this weekend, but because of car issues, we decided to hit something closer to home. We made our way to cedar point on sunday mid day. We got there around 3pm only to find a packed parking lot. No worries though, because I have been wanting to check out some of the shows. This meant that we did not get to ride too many rides.

We were finally able to ride the new water ride that night, because it was not in operation all day. I have to say that I am kind of disappointed in the new ride. Not only do you get soaked, but it's just a boring ride as well. You more less stay dry during the ride, until the 2nd drop. You get blasted by water jets at the bottom of the drop. The ride really does not fill that void that was made when white water landing was removed. It is a great looking ride, and I hope they can get all the bugs worked out.

We also stayed for the fireworks. They were ok.

I was also able to get some pictures of the new construction markers as well.

As you can see, the park was packed.

I wanted to see this show, but I kept missing the show times.

Instead of fighting the crowds, we decided to ride the sky ride. We were not the only ones with the same idea.

Nice report and photos.

That pet check looks terribly depressing though. I don't think I would leave my dog there.

As for STR, I have yet to ride it so I really shouldn't judge but it just doesn't appeal to me all too much. I actually love log rides but I think this one looks a little boring.

The woodcarver will actually make one of these for you if you want. He is also going to make miniatures of her as well. He does some really good work. I bought a replica of mill race from him last year, and love it.

It's funny to see the purple shirts (merchandise, where I work at Carowinds) at the other parks. I'm used to seeing the red/blue rides uniforms, but not the merchandise ones.

Great report.

Nice pics...sorry to hear it was so crowded on the 4th. I really wondered if it would be as crowds were light when we were in the park on Friday and even though the parking lot was about 3/4's full on Saturday, the lines for Millenium, Blue Streak, Mean Streak (no surprise there) and Raptor looked even shorter than they were on Friday when we were leaving the park from Soak City. Must have been a lot of locals coming in for the fireworks.

Sorry to hear of your disappointment with STR. If I would have waited in a huge line, I might have been disappointed in it, but I thought it was a good ride and a good addition for the park. I didn't get completely soaked from head to toe sitting in the 2nd seat on the right, so it seemed like an acceptable amount of wetness to me. Guess it's just where you are seated...

I'm a little late in guessing Schwabinchen as far as the wood carving, but I did recognize it right away when we walked by it on the Frontier Trail! Anyone remember where the location for the ride was before it was relocated to over by where Chaos currently sits?

Posted

I believe it used to be where wildcat sits now.

There used to be 2 of these types of rides in the park. The other version of the ride was located next to the scrambler where the covered tables are now.

I wanna say it was called "trabant" or "roulette wheel".

Correct! It used to be right next to Bayern Curve where Wildcat sits now. And yep, the other 'Trabant' was over by the Scrambler. Remember when they had Rotor near the same area with the Sky Slide and mini-golf course?

I seem to also remember Calypso was once where Matterhorn currently sits, but where was Matterhorn before then? Didn't they also used to have two Calypso rides?

Posted

Rotor sat where chaos is today.

Calypso used to sit where raptors loop is today. Calypso used to look a heck of a lot nicer with all of it's scenery. Now it just looks like a shell of it's former self.

Posted

I bet you don't remember where the monster used to be.

A few more rides you may not remember are the, tiki twirl, double ferris wheel, and king arthers court.

Posted

TIKI TWIRL! I couldn't remember the name of the other Calypso-like ride! That was the one that sat where Matterhorn is now, correct? I remember the overhead tiki "straw"!

If my memory serves me correctly, I was thinking that Monster used to be over by where the entrance to Iron Dragon is...right across from where Bayern Curve and Schwabinchen used to be? Most probably remember the ferris wheel being over there as well as the 2nd skyride that took you from the Corkscrew to Frontier Town.

I do remember all of the other rides you mentioned. Now didn't they also have an Earthquake dark ride on the midway as well as the Pirate Ride that is still boarded up over by Blue StreaK? I did snap a pic of the cannons at the old entrance which still remain.

Pirate Ride...RIP.

Posted

Yep.

Earthquake used to be where the large snoopy gift shop is on the main midway.

Out of all the lost rides at cedar point, I miss the pirat ride the most. It was a really good dark ride. I remember the large pirat boat they used to have out in front of the ride. There also used to be a pond surrounding the boat, and it had cannon explosions going off in the water. Kinda like how they have on mavericks turn over the water today.

The building is now used for a halloweekends haunted house, and a storage area. If you go inside during halloween, you can still see all of the markings on the floor where the dark ride tubs went. There are a few arrows on the floor as well.

If memory serves me about the dark ride the rooms were as followed. I know I am forgetting a room.

rooms...

1. village scene....I remember a drunken pirat chasing a girl around with a bottle

2. Bar scene.....I remember the bottle sliding down the bar.

3. swamp scene...I remember a wrecked ship with a pirat passed out drunk on it.There was also a giant octopuss.

4. Giant heart....You went right thru the heart. Not sure what it had to do with the pirat scene, but cool none the less.

5. Giant pirat boats....On both sides of you were giant pirat boats shooting cannons at eachother.

6. Treasure scenes...I believe there were pirats with treasures and some skeletons stranded on an island.

7. The hanging scene....I remember the guy being hung, and his neck streching.

8. Ride exit....I remember the skeleton with the sword at the exit along with a groan that he made. I will never forget that sound, as that is all you heard while waiting in line.

I also remember the awsome art work in the station as well.

I can remember a little bit of the earthquake ride, but not much. Just a bunch of buildings falling over and a witch. I remember the station and the news broadcasts that you would hear while in line. There was also a great scene painted on the wall in the station. I don't remember much else, but I think it had rather large ride vehicles as well. I hear that there are some paintings n a wall, and some marks on the floor in the back storage room in the snoopy gift shop.

I know I am rambling on about the dark rides, but I have so many memories of the dark rides at the park.

Posted

Cool! Thanks for bringing back some memories! I remember all of the scenes you described in the Pirate ride...it really was a great dark ride. I remember how those cannons would scare people that were walking by!

It is surprising that they only use that for Halloweekends now. Not sure if the building would be big enough for them to put in one of those shooting dark rides? I think it would be a great addition for the park. Even better if they could recreate the Pirate ride itself.

Have you ever seen a picture of the Chinatown wax museum they had there in the 50's? Apparently, it was a depiction of the larger sectors of Chinese cities where they presented dimly lit scenes of Asian and white women who had become opium addicts. The entrance sign reads:

"See white & Chinese Girl Addicts!

Slaves of Opium!

Show in Authentic Dope Den!"

You just don't see attractions like THAT at U.S. amusement parks anymore...sure wish I could have witnessed that one!

I miss the pirate ride, not to mention how the midway was before Dragster was introduced. So many trees...
