Kieran Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Hey guys planning my trip to the states for December/January 2010/11. Ive been once before but that was on a school trip, so this time I need help with hotels. I'd like personal opinions from people on 3-4 star hotels around L.A, The Strip in Las Vegas, Miami and New York City. I know there are plenty of sites like trip advisor and such but I want some recommendations from people such as yourselves.
QueerRudie Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 For me, I use Trip Advisor for most of my hotel booking (Domesitc USA at least) as it tends to make it much easier for me to find things that fit my needs- and that it will tell me specifc features that I use when on the road (I.E. Handicapped Access, close to facilities, food and bar, etc.) I also find it tends to be less 'congested' over the other site (Travelocity, Priceline, etc.) as it's written with business travellers in mind- However, the features really work out well for TPR type things- as they give direct distances to the parks and related from the site as well. R.D.
Carnage Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 LA/Miami/NYC are a bit to vague to make specific recommendations, as it would depend on where you're going to be, and what you're planning on doing. The only general suggestion I'd make is to not cheap out. It might be tempting to book a $60 a night motel, but you might end up regretting it.
christianscoasters Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 I've been to all those places, but we usually had some unique situations: Los Angeles: We never actually went into the city. We were always in the suburbs. Our whole purpose was to be close to SFMM. We had a cheap-o hotel in some suburb. Wasn't THAT bad, but not amazing either. Miami: I was just staying the night there in an airport hotel to go to the Dominican Republic the next day, so can't really say much. NYC: OMG. DO NOT CHEAP OUT. We got a $60 a night hotel around New Year's in Jersey City. With the PATH train, it was only 15 minutes to Times Square, NYC. The reviews were right, it was a "fairly safe" hotel. NEVER AGAIN. We were terrified and the room was junk. Definitely plan on spending over $100 if you want a decent room. The closer to NYC, the more expensive it will get. Don't hesitate to get a hotel that's not actually in NYC because public transportation is excellent and can get you anywhere you need easily.
LoopLover Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Ummm....Well I have never visited Miami but have had good hotel experiences in L.A., Vegas and NYC! L.A. - We stayed in The Crowne Plaza Beverly Hills. It was just an average four star hotel in quite a quiet area about a 30 minute walk away from the "biz" There is a swimming pool and the interior is decorated in a similar fashion to my local Crowne Plaza in Scotland. Apparently it was good value and I enjoyed my stay. Vegas - When we were in Vegas we stayed in The Luxor Hotel. It is huge! Comes in at around number 5 in the "largest hotels in the world" list. The hotel is similar to any other in Vegas....Large lobby with a casino, arcades, restaurants and cafes. There were also some great exhibitions when we were there on the upper levels - Titanic: The Artifact Experience and Bodies. There are also shows and comedians. The room was basic for a four star hotel but did the job. If you choose the Luxor be sure to get a pyramid room as to access these you must ride in an "inclinator" Basically a sideways elevator! The Luxor is towards the top of the strip! N.Y.C. - Helmsley Hotel! Average three star with a great location! Hope this helped!
ernierocker Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Going to lock this, since his vacation has already happened in January. No need to keep giving him advice then.
