mejaybe
Hey everybody. Long time viewer but I don't post too much. Took my kids to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom about a month ago. This is really the first time that they've both been old enough to ride the coasters together. My little one was sooo excited to finally be tall enough! The day started out with Tony Hawk's Big Spin which, I have to admit, takes up most of the video. The on-ride cams weren't working that day though so I did my best to hold my Nikon Coolpix steady enough to capture all the action. We hit Roar! immediately after then saw a few shows before going to Cobra and Boomerang. All in all, it was a very fun day. The video turned out better than I had hoped but I'll let you all be the judge of that. http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=7ov9Ht-rhCo Sorry but I don't know how to use the "YouTube" button when posting the above link. Enjoy! ~JayBe
itnotfair
Cool video! I plan on hitting DK sometime this year, thanks for posting! Do I hear the stylings of a one-armed drummer in the background?
mejaybe
That would indeed be the incredibly tallented Mr. Rick Allen! I really thought the music fit the day and worked out great for the video. My apologies to those who don't appreciate the 80's as much as us geezers. tanthonyam
I visited the park this month on a Sunday, and was dissapointed. It was too damn crowded for Oct. I didnt understand it. 1 train running on KONG, and ROAR! Thanks alot Six Flags. I gave up waiting for ROAR and never got to ride it. They should change the name to- LINE! (you'll never see the end of it) The place is just a glorified zoo, and not a very impressive one I might add. At least I enjoyed MEDUSA abd V2. I would not return here again. RideOn87
^Its called Fright Fest. It tends to attract alot of guests. As to running one train, thats disappointing, if it wasn't mechanical issues, hopefully they added on the 2nd later in the day.
mejaybe
I went on a Sunday as well but they hadn't put up the stuff for Fright Fest yet. Only one train on Roar as well but less crowds made for shorter lines on everything except Tony Hawk. That guy sure knows how to draw an audience. thrillgeek
Very nice video! Your lucky the on-ride video on Tony Hawk wasn't working otherwise you might have been kicked out of the park for bringing yours onto the ride. As far as the one train operation goes....literally every time I've gone this year they've only been running one train on Roar. It's sad around this time of year when the lines get incredibly long at times. Glad you had fun non the less!
tanthonyam
I thought Tony Hawk was way too short of a ride, and not really worth waiting maybe 5 or 10 mins tops. Too bad ZONGA was gone. I would have preffered that instead.
itnotfair
For those of you who have ridden both, how is Tony Hawk's Big Spin compared to Sierra Sidewinder at KBF? SS is the only spinner I've ever been on, and it's fairly fast and forceful for a Camp Snoopy ride. On a side note, I think the Screamin' Demon at Castle Park is open now. That makes three spinning coasters in California!
mejaybe
Never been on the spinner at KBF but have been on the one at the amusement park inside the Mall of America in Minnesota. I forget its name but I actually preferred it over Tony Hawk's simply because it seemed smoother. I'm not much for spinning rides anyway so who am I to judge? Double0Kevin
I definitely prefer Tony Hawk of Sierra Sidewinder, I never really liked SS to be honest. I think THBS is a fun little ride though. As for one train op on roar and kong, you guys have to realize the park is only closed for a 6 week off season this year, that is not enough time to rehab 2 trains. You gotta cut a train from a ride at one point, better to lower capacity and keep it open rather than have it down for a few weeks entirely. Plus those rides aren't like Medusa where there are 3 trains and you can run 2 while one is going through rehab. On a side note, the park updated their holiday in the park page to list rides being open for the event. Better get in your last rides on Boomerang and V2, they didn't make the cut this year. Makes sense with them being the 1 train rides.
itnotfair
Cool, thanks! I can't wait to try out THBS! I'm planning a trip to SFDK and CGA soon, actually. I was going to go in January, but I hear it gets pretty stormy, so I'm thinking of bumping it up to late November. Think the weather will be decent? Double0Kevin
^the weather has been great this year with the exception of this weekend. Today was pretty bad. Last year, Holiday in the Park was fairly nice with only a few days of rain. Mostly it just gets cold. We had nights with temps in the low 30s. But if your waiting for late November, make sure you wait till the start of Holiday in the Park on Nov. 28. It's a great event that is lots of fun and this year will be even bigger then last. itnotfair
Thanks for the recommendation! Seems like a neat event, apparently they will have the world's largest xmas tree. It looks like they'll be closing some of the coasters for the event, though. We can't have that. Personally, I get enough winter pageantry at Disneyland anyway. I just wanna ride the coasters. I'm hoping to avoid crowds and to get some good rides in by not planning my trip on a holiday weekend.
Double0Kevin
The tree was the tallest in the world last year. This year it's just the tallest in NorCal. If your avoiding HiP cause of the crowds, don't worry bout that, it's a fairly tame event with moderate crowds. Enough people to make it seem like it's not pointless, but slow enough for everyone to enjoy. Not like Disneyland where they reach near sell out levels.
