Sue Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 We're planning a trip for mid-June in which we're going to visit the parks of Texas and New Mexico. For anyone familiar with the parks/areas, have any of these parks offered discounts in the past--Wonderland, Joyland, Kemah Boardwalk, Western Playland, or Cliff's? We never realized what weird hours some of these parks had in western TX and NM. All of these smaller parks are only open from about 7-10 at night and Cliff's is only open 11-4 on the day we'll be there. In addition to those parks, we'll also be visiting the SF parks and Sea World. We've been to the SF parks and Sea World before, but the other parks will be new to us. If anyone in those areas would like to meet up, we'd love to meet some TPR members. Also, if anyone has suggestions on non-coaster activities or sights to see in those areas, please post your thoughts here. We definitely plan on visiting Riverwalk which we loved the last time we were there and touring a couple baseball stadiums and maybe even seeing games if the teams are at home.
IggyACE Posted February 16, 2008 Posted February 16, 2008 Hey Sue, If you have time before Kemah you could spend a few hours in the Space Center.... http://www.spacecenter.org/ It was one of the kids highlights when we we out there in Oct. We did everything in about 4-5 hours and the tour is a must hit while there. Craig
Sue Posted February 17, 2008 Author Posted February 17, 2008 Wow, all the people on these forums and no one has any advice? Help a woman out! All I get is one answer and from Craig of all people(j/k Craig!).
Noxegon Posted February 17, 2008 Posted February 17, 2008 I'm lurking in this thread largely because I'm doing much the same thing in May. If you're prepared to wait until then I'll gladly post feedback on how our route went! The plan is here - http://www.bannister.org/coasters/trips/2008/
Rastuso Posted February 18, 2008 Posted February 18, 2008 First up, you didn't mention Schlitterbahn, the greatest water park in the world, just a few miles NE of San Antonio. It'll be crowded, and you should be there an hour before advertised opening to be ready to go in case they open 30 minutes early as they normally do. Space Center is nice, but really has little to do with Space except for the tour. It's more of a kid's science center, and is pricey if you do the tour. in San Antonio, right in front of the Alamo, is a newly renovated dark ride themed to an Egyptian crypt as part of the Guinness/Ripley's stuff. When it was Davey Crockett, it was pretty expensive, and I figure it still will be, but a nice quicky if you'll be at the Alamo anyway. And don't forget the basement. There is Sandy Lake Park in Dallas which has a nice old Pretzel and vintage mini golf course. There is also a huge arcade museum that is supposed to be open soon in Houston, but you'd have to check closer to your trip. Most of all, it'll be fargin hot when you're here. Hot enough to drain your energy in a matter of hours. Sunscreen is a must, multiple times during the day. -R
Sue Posted February 18, 2008 Author Posted February 18, 2008 Awww, how sweet, Craig! Richard, I'd definitely love to hear how your trip goes. I'll try to remember to check your website for updates in May. Question--how are you going to be at Sesame Place one day and Cliff's the next? Rastus, we have been to Schlitterbahn before and it was awesome, but we're skipping it this time around. We also visited Sandy Lake last time so that one is getting a pass this time as well. Last time we were in Texas was June so I'm sure the temperature should be similar to last time even though we're going a week or 2 later.
JimmyBo Posted February 19, 2008 Posted February 19, 2008 Been there, did it last year. Cliff's you can pretty much do in about an hour. Wonderland is the ghetto of the ghetto little parks and you can pay per ride (the wristband is not worth it since the Texas Tornado and I think the new coaster from Astroworld don't count on the wristband). I think Wonderland worked out perfect for us for it's hours since we drove all day to get there and hit up the park at night and then left the next morning. As for the other parks...yousaid you have been there before but I must say if you go to SFFT then go to Tony Hawk first because they were really slow in dispatching and it's a low capacity ride. Have fun Jimmy "The official TPR drunkaholic" Bo
