Pride of America - Cruise Ship

The ship was built in my hometown, but here the unbelievable story:

Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America, now in relatively final stages of construction at a German shipyard, may well be one of the mostly highly anticipated new ship debuts of the 21st century.

When in January 2004 a hurricane left the "Pride OF America" capsize and their shipyard in Bremerhaven had to announce the insolvency, hardly someone had believed in their completion. Now the cruise ship stings in sea on Monday towards New York - after an unbelievable breakdown series.

The building of a cruise ship was accompanied rarely by such setbacks as with the "Pride OF America". The ship was originally designed by now-defunct American Classic Voyages, which aimed to build the first ship in half a century in a U.S. shipyard. The significance, beyond the patriotism, was that a vessel waiving a U.S. flag (and thus able to avoid Jones Act-related calls to foreign ports) could sail all-Hawaii itineraries. But already soon schedule and cost frameworks were hopelessly exceeded.

When the news from 11th September 2001 temporarily put lamely the tourism in the USA, the shipping company reserves were exhausted. They had to announce bankruptcy. The NCL acquired the carcass and assigned those Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven the completion. Those is accustomed for lack of own steel production to leave itself trunks supply. "However, we had not anything to do with the original planning, thats why the "Pride OF America" were the most difficult project, which we ever took over", say Werner Lüken, shipyard managing directors.

It should become still more difficult: At the night to 14th January 2004 the ship sank during a hurricane at the equipment jetty, Pride of America was flooded up to the third deck, listed 15 degrees and sank to the bottom of the shallow 11-meter deep water-bed - an accident, which excited attention also because of its symbol strength. Finally it concerned the "Pride OF America" - and the German-American relations had already run during the Iraq war. For the Lloyd shipyard had the average dramatic consequences: They had to announce insolvency because of the delivery date, which can not be kept any longer.

But shipyard, shipping company and insurer agreed to further-build the ship. Now the "Pride OF America" is finished, Lloyd expects to a restart after the conclusion of the insolvency procedure.

On 23th July the "Pride OF America" is ready for the first cruise to Hawaii, and to give 2146 passengers a few ensure-free days - even if it was a right difficult child.

I'm actually not a very big NCL fan. I think their service is pretty poor compared to most cruise companies. My parents did one of their special "american" cruises that goes around Hawaii with American Staff and said it was horrible!

I love the pictures though!

I never have heared anything about this cruise line! I only like the unbelievable story of this ship! It was a big desaster, as the ship was sinking after the hurricane! But now, after all this bad things, the ship is on her way to New York!

They have a lot of nerve calling it "Pride of America" when they aren't even registered in this country to avoid taxation, employment, and other laws! Not to mention, if you're ever assulted on a cruise ship, you will never get justice. (A growing problem.) Guess that's why I don't go on cruises.

Pride of America will be flagged with a U.S. Flag, so I guess it should be U.S. Registered. Just like Superstar Virgo is flagged with a Panama flag and is also Panama Registered.

However, I might be wrong.

Rgds.
