This happened Friday, last week. I was just a few blocks away.

Fire at the Venetian hotel and casino in Las Vegas

The Las Vegas fire department reported a 3-alarm fire at The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. Traffic was closed off on Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road as a result while the fire department handled the fire.

The fire started on Friday at around 8 p.m. with dark smoke and flames coming out of the building.

The Clark County Fire Department said that the fire began after a construction sign (for Phantom of the Opera) that was fastened to a decorative tower on The Venetian blew off because of strong winds and was either overheated by a light or hit a light that sparked an electrical fire.

Flames rose to about 40-feet into the air while thousand of tourists watched from across the street as the fire department put out the fire, which was contained to the exterior of the Venetian.

I was there, I saw a video, and still searching for it. I have a picture of the aftermath from my cell phone. I'll get it uploaded ASAP.

Sorry if it has been posted, searched, didn't find anything.

AFTERMATH? A bit extreme no?

They had this all over the television the night it happened. First the scrolling banner, then the breaking news reports. Stuff rarely happens here in Vegas, so they get all excited when the littlest thing does.

Not to minimize this fire, but it wasn't anywhere near the hotel tower or casino...they didnt even evacuate. I assume the 3 alarms were rang because it had been really windy that day and they wanted to make sure it didnt spread. They had already closed the Strip in front of the Venetian earlier in the day when the Blue Man Group's sign blew off.

Where is the damage? I don't see any in that pic. This sounds a lot like when "Disney's California Adventure Caught Fire!!!!" OMG! OMG! OMG!!!!

Talk about sensationalized.

Then again....big headlines sell papers!

LAS VEGAS ON FIRE!!!!

Hell, I'd probably buy the paper too!
