CoasterGoblin Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Hi I'll be flying into Louisville to visit Holiday World for the first time. Was wondering if it was worth spending half a day (or more) at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom to hit all the coasters there using my Six Flags season pass. Also are there any other rides worth hitting at nearby parks (Kentucky Rumbler?) given the short 2 days? I know some parks are a few hours away but I'm not sure if 2 days is enough time to do all that if The Voyage is as good as people say it is! Thanks!
SonOfBeastSucks Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 Half a day at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom is worth it with your season pass. That might not even require half of a day if the lines are short enough. If you don't intend to go to Splashin' Safari [Holiday World's water park], then the rest of the day will be enough for Holiday World. Paramount King's Island is also close and has quite a few credits. However, if you choose Kings Island, you most likely won't have time for Beech Bend because it is in the opposite direction. If you do choose Kings Island, as long as lines aren't very long, it will not require a whole day. If you want to visit another smaller park in the area in addition to Kings Island, you can't find a list of nearby parks here: http://www.rcdb.com/locationresult.htm?nearpark=12&pstatus=141 Beech Bend will not take up the whole day and there aren't any other parks in the area. Have fun, the Voyage is amazing. If you have any other questions, post them and they will be answered.
Guest Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 SFKK can be done in a matter of 2-3 hours granted there aren't any lines. I would hit up SFKK and Beech Bend on your first day. Drive the 80 or so miles to HW. Check into a hotel. Get up the next day and do the full day at HW. Half of which you could probably hit up some rides in the water park as well. It should be pretty leisurely. Have fun! Voyage is definitely worth your trip. The last ride I had on it was on pyscho mode back at around 11:30pm at Holiwood Nights. Try to get a night ride on Voyage if you can, it'll be well worth it.
SharkTums Posted July 13, 2006 Posted July 13, 2006 I agree with everyone else. Do SFKK and Beech Bend one day and Holiday World the other. Keep in mind other than the Coasters and the Water Park, there's not that much at Holiday World.
CoasterGoblin Posted July 14, 2006 Author Posted July 14, 2006 Thanks for the suggestions!! I'll definately keep it in mind when planning the hotels to book.
Sean Menefee Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 Check out Schnitzelbank if you get the shot as well. It's not that far down the highway from Holiday World and has a great selection of food and drink. http://www.schnitzelbank.com/ The gift shops sells mini kegs so you can't go wrong. Have fun on your trip! Sean "Don't forget you can buy big ass legal fireworks in Indiana!" Menefee
CoasterGoblin Posted July 15, 2006 Author Posted July 15, 2006 The first day I'm in the Louisville area HW closes at 8pm and the second day they close at 6pm. Anyone know if gets dark by 8pm? If not I'll probably go to HW on the second day. Menefee thanks for the Schnitzelbank suggestion.. may or may not go though because I'm borderline veggie!
SharkTums Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 What are the dates you're going? Then you can check sunset/sunrise times.
SonOfBeastSucks Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 I live in a part of Indiana under Eastern Time. Holiday World is on Central Time, and is an hour behind us. In the EST time zone it doesn't get entirely dark until in the 9:30-10 PM area, so in Holiday World's case, it most likely gets dark between 8:30-9 PM.
CoasterGoblin Posted July 15, 2006 Author Posted July 15, 2006 I sure am a n00b.. THANKS! Looking at http://www.sunrisesunset.com/calendar.asp it seems the days I'm going (sep 3nd, 4th) the sunset might be about 7:15 or so for Santa Claus. Probably won't be getting entirely dark until a bit after that.. thanks everyone.
mr_teisco_delrey Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 I would stay in Louisville and fan out from there. That way you don't have to check in and check out of places. Drive times to Beech Bend and HW are only about 90 mins or so. Louisville is Eastern time which means you don't have to get up too early to get to Beech Bend, or HW.
CoasterGoblin Posted July 31, 2006 Author Posted July 31, 2006 I'll consider staying in Louisville thanks.. though I think I'd rather drive at night than wake up early to drive to the parks (will be coming from PST). A few questions if anyone has suggestions: -Would most people prefer Beech Bend and SFKK instead of a full day at PKI? -If I do Beech Bend and SFKK in one day is it best to start at Beech Bend and end at SFKK (SFKK will be closing an hour later and opening at the same time given the timezone difference).. or would it be easier to get on all of the coasters at SFKK if I'm there right when it opens as opposed to getting there 4 hours before closing? I know that would be the case at my local SF park Magic Mountain (if the coasters open on time). -Is Flash Pass at SFKK available in the afternoon (at around 4pm) and is it that useful or is the park generally not that busy? Will probably be visiting on Labor Day. Thanks for any suggetsions!
mr_teisco_delrey Posted July 31, 2006 Posted July 31, 2006 If you are going for credits PKI is the way to go. No SoB though. If you haven't been on the Beast, by all means PKI is a must. The KY Rumbler at Beech Bend is a great coaster though. From Louisville PKI is about a 2 hour drive up I-71. The only caveat is that you will be in town Labor Day. PKI might be jammed.
ginzo Posted August 1, 2006 Posted August 1, 2006 You should seriously consider Beech Bend. The park is kinda dumpy, but Kentucky Rumbler is great. It's nicer than anything at PKI. Paramount has not done a good job of maintaining the rides. Many of them are quite rough. The Beast is braked to hell and back now. They trim it something like 4 times now, including going down both lift hills. Perhaps you should take a look and see what park has the rides you're most interested in.
CoasterGoblin Posted August 2, 2006 Author Posted August 2, 2006 I think I'll stick with my original plan an do Beech Bend and SFKK in one day. Thanks for the suggestions. Beech Bend sounds kind of different and unique (if a bit dumpy) compared to the parks I've been to (primarily SoCal parks). Thanks. Any suggestions on which park (Beech Bend or SFKK) would be better to hit in the morning vs. afternoon?
ginzo Posted August 2, 2006 Posted August 2, 2006 Well, if you're staying in Louisville it might make sense to start with Beech Bend, then go back to Kentucky Kingdom. That way you'll be near the hotel after an exhaustive day of running around 2 parks. One gotcha to keep in mind is that Beech Bend is in Central Time Zone, while Kentucky Kingdom is in Eastern Time Zone. Thus, Beech Bend will be an hour behind Kentucky Kingdom.
