Great pictures man, were you working the event? Either way pretty awesome to get to attend a super bowl.

Sofi looks incredible, would love to make it out there for a game one of these days.

Define work 😂(but yes, I was)

There’s no bad seat at sofi thanks to being in LAX flight path, which means the field is 100ft below sea level. so definitely PM me if you visit. I want to do the Jacksonville pools!

Even if I wasn’t working, would recommend any football fan attend. The vibe is just on a different level. Im glad the game came down to the end, definitely added to the energy in the building.

  2. Resurrecting this thread because there was a football game this past Sunday!

If you weren’t aware, the NFL completely takes over a stadium before the game and transforms it.  Amongst the other changes is moving the entrance gates out into the parking lots and filling the parking lots up with mostly very expensive paid tailgates and a free one with some music acts.

They also add their own graphics package to the entire stadium. Barely any of the stadiums existing signage remains for the event.

They also have to build temporary broadcast booths to accommodate all the broadcasts throughout the world.

the flyover doesn’t really work when the stadium has a giant roof over it (but it’s still open air at the ends), but here it was from the outside!

the iPhone wide angle lens takes my favorite photos of the stadium!

Photo of the setting up of the halftime show. It’s definitely a made for TV production since the buildings were only open on one side. I watched from the scoreboard.

The rams lining up for the winning play!

Rams win! They are the first team in history to host the conference title game and super bowl in the same season and second team in a row to win at their home stadium after having that never happen prior to the Bucs last season.

…and the Fans storm the field to celebrate!

Same reason it takes a lot longer to refurbish a classic car instead of just building a brand new car at a factory. When you’re (presumably) keeping many of the original components extra care needs to be taken.

Great analogy.  The engineering and re-building process is completely different.  It’s not “plug and play” like a new coaster.

As others have mentioned as well, supply chains are still messed up right now. Sourcing the components could be another factor for why the project is expected to take so long (remember, they’re not just buying the parts to open the ride, they have to buy spares too).

Or, hypothetically, if they are going to keep the flywheel launch but need a brand new one since the old one isn’t able to be repaired any longer, you’d be asking a manufacturer to build a one off of something that tooling has long since disappeared.

Ultimately, there are lots of reasons why it could be scheduled for such a long downtime, but it’s certainly not unusual.

Why would  it take a year and a half to change over to LIMs and add new trains. That seems like a 90 day refurb at most. But they specifically used the word renovation. That leads me to believe they are doing something much more involved and Monty may have seen it's last days as a simple shuttle loop....I still think they should just turn Jaguar into an Intamin Blitz. Keep the station and theming. You can even use pretty much the same foot print for the most part.

I don’t think you have any idea how complex converting the ride to a different launch system really would be. 6 months would be considered a fast turnaround…

you need a new train, new electrical system, new control system, structural modifications, training the crew again, getting state certification…

Thanks very much for the insight!

I was confused by all the “the neighbors won’t allow this” comments given that, as you say, my vague understanding is that individual homeowners can’t do much to block a land use that is a) legal and b) supported by the larger community as represented by a city council. (Neighborhood councils exist in LA; are they not a thing in OC?)

I also don’t see why Knott’s would waste anyone’s time or money designing improvements for un-improvable areas, so I assume the park thinks this can work (perhaps with reasonable noise mitigation efforts in an effort to be a good neighbor).

Of course, whether Knott’s ultimately wants this coaster is another question. I’m trying not to get excited until the coaster is actually announced, but I’m happy the park is at least contemplating what we all want, and what would be a FANTASTIC addition to the park!

Knotts has their own small team for design and construction.  If these plans are legit, it looks like it was their version that got leaked. They do general plotting and then leave it to the actual ride firm engineers to do the real technical engineering and will serve as the project managers for the construction.

Because the Bay Area is one of the few areas of the US that truly act like Euros when it comes to complaining about parks

Great America had issues because the land was pubic land (owned by the city of Santa Clara) they were just leasing. Now cedar fair owns the property.

There will certainly be some angry neighbors at the city council meeting when this comes up for approval, but there is zero chance it will get denied. I have no inside information, but I would assume that Knotts already has everything they need ready to go, including an environmental impact report that includes a section on noise and noise abatement.

  7. Viper can technically run 4 trains. There are two blocks outside the station (transfer track and brakes outside the station). They never will run more than 3 though.

Viper had 4 trains, gutted one for parts, and is now back to 4 thanks to inheriting one from another park that tore down their arrow looper. One is always slowly being refurbished in the cycle shop, so you will rarely see them all at the ride.

Knotts like a lot of jobs is just having an hard time getting people to work. The age group of a lot of the staff at knotts use anything to call out and not come into work.

These are performers.  More than likely they had a COVID outbreak amongst the cast and simply don’t have replacements that can be ready before the season is over given the rehearsal time needed.

Finally made my first visit to this park for HHN yesterday. They were calling for tornados and rough storms all day. Never happened and park was fairly dead except for 9-12ish. Rained for 20 min at 3:00.

Glad I took Bills advice and made the Bourne show with stay and scream entry. Bourne was incredible. Tech is amazing. Screen and projectors are amazing. No glitches. Wow.

Had a fun night and did everything. Actually did 15 house walkthroughs since we had express and knocked out most without it first trip around the park. Saw the Fuel show. Good times.

I thought the tech was amazing, but the show itself was kind of lacking in the writing/action department.  T2 was better IMO.

I really do want to know who was responsible for this decision making.

”Hey, we know that this card is probably going to be required for a lot of things. Should we make it wallet sized?”

”No. Make it really big and annoying”

”Okay. Then should we have a federal universal digital version then since we’ve known that this moment would be coming for a year “

    ”No”

Probably the same folks in LA county who require vaccine/negative test and still want masks outdoors 🙄

Thankfully if you got your vaccine in LA county, they have a digital pass too. I’ve used that with no problems.

This is Universal.  They've already blown this decade's budget on new, original attractions in Asia. The best you'll get is a slightly modified import of an existing attraction or Jimmy Fallon 2.  Choose wisely.

Who cares? The percentage of people who will visit every universal park is so small. If buying in bulk saves costs and shares engineering resources (even though it’s the same company, each park has their own budget) for a better overall ride, go ahead and clone all the good rides.

Pets would be a fantastic addition to UO and fit perfectly for making that area an illuminations themed street with DM already there.

^ If that were true then the prices for Scary Farm wouldn't be at a large premium.  See below -

Saturday, October 9th prices per their website -

    Knott's Daytime - $59 admission, $99 Fast Lane, $20 parking

    Knott's Scary Farm - $77 admission, $159 Fright & Fast Lane, $25 parking

But yeah, sure, I'm totally paying for haunt, not rides.  Come on, man.  In years past I've been able to enjoy Scary Farm with Fright Lane and the Boo-fet for $150-ish.  Without the Boo-fet this year I'm already getting shafted for $236 before parking.

Edit - You know, after doing that math and knowing I'll only be seeing one new haunt, one new scare zone, and two less coasters it really pisses me off.

It’s almost as if it’s a special event that only happens during a certain time every year and not daytime operation which is available to you 365 days a year, thus there is less demand and much more supply for daytime.

You’re on this board. You know how special events at parks work.
