According to The Motley Fool, Six Flags will be launching a redesigned and more engaging website later this month -- featuring in-park video footage of parks, rides and attractions; interactive virtual games, among other new things. Also, four arcades are being upgraded this year from the outdated coin/token approach to new arcade systems like those found at Gameworks where "playcards" are issued and can be "recharged" for more play at the register at certain prices. Every guest will be issued one of these cards with one or two free gameplays -- which I think is an ingenious move. Get people to play a free game on the house -- they're more likely to spend money to continue playing a little longer. Source

Geauga Lake Discussion Thread
kraxleRIDAH replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I know we're all aware that Steel Venom is leaving Geauga Lake, but for those that are interested, the park has finally removed Steel Venom from their website. http://www.geaugalake.com/public/inside_park/rides/roller_coasters/index.cfm However, no sign of work has taken place over at Steel Venom yet. ALL X-Flight parts have disappeared from the Geauga Lake property. -
Knott's Great America
kraxleRIDAH replied to speedracer's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
From a corporate perspective looking for high marketability, it makes sense to attach Knott's as a prefix to Great America...but like everyone here has already pointed out, it just makes no sense and sounds absolutely horrible. Sure, "Knott's" has become a brand identity over the past few decades, but "Knott's" was derived from the entire title "Knott's Berry Farm" (the name is exactly what it sounds like) and it makes no sense to use it any other context, prefix wise or not. Walter Knott did not own a "Great America" nor do I think any member of the Knott family is familiar with Santa Clara. -
Great update as usual Jahan. It's great to see all these little fixer-upper things happening around the park although I'm a bit skeptical this will be maintained once the summer crowds come in. Anybody remember this time of year one year ago? Tatsu going up, so many "improvements." Then look what happened. I hope to God we don't have a repeat of 2006.

Uh. Those aren't rumors. There's a good reason why Magic Mountain had this particular "reputation" and still does today. The kind of clients the park attracts does not make families with younger children feel comfortable at all, I'm sure you as a visitor to Magic Mountain can see what I mean by that. A few years ago (I believe it was 1998) near closing time, a man was shot and killed in the park's parking lot following a quarrel that began inside in the park. In another incident, a guy was critically wounded when he was shanked (stabbed forcefully by a knife) in the Batman queue after a scuffle between two people from two different parties. These two particular incidents were influencial in forcing the park to install those metal detectors we all love so much and bringing in a the County Sheriff's sub-station onto park grounds. For a good half decade, the park has been very good in terms of guest safety and is takes a lot of precautions to ensure past incidents like I mentioned above do not occur again. However, once incidents like that make the news and word of mouth goes around the area, it's hard to stop it. It's like wildfire.

Why should he have to? If he disagrees with the hopefullness of a new coaster sometime in the near future why should he give an explanation? I think most of us here can give you a multitude of reasons why Magic Mountain DOESN'T need a new roller coaster. I'm sure you can figure those out for yourself before anybody starts to "explain" them to you.

It's perfectly understandable why a lot of parents don't like visiting Magic Mountain. Not so much that it's "teen infested" but mostly due to the major incidents that involved a shooting in the parking lot and a stabbing in a queue line (mind you this was YEARS ago). I certainly see time being a factor in turning Magic Mountain around again.

SOB New Trains from Myrtle Beach

What? How is any of that remotely true? I can see how heavy trains (Psyclone's B&M trains) can do that, but light coaches tear up the track? If anything, lighter coaches create less wear and tear on the structure. -
^ I don't think X ever had a specific theme, at least nothing Magic Mountain has disclosed via press release or anything. All that Area 51 mumbo jumbo was all enthusiast talk. I think the station house looking like an airplane hanger is strictly a coincedence. Wide trains = wide station = wide roof covering.

1. No need to be a jerk. 2. I think that sounds like a good name ( better than X anyway ) Maybe if they somehow threw some more overused Batman theming it would be better than its current state. I honestly think that Six Flags is done with spending money on this cash whore. They will probably just fix it and be done with it.... No need to be so sensitive. I don't think you said it out loud to yourself to hear it. "Project X." Say it. Sounds horrible. What's to make a project out of anyway? X is fine the way it is. I don't believe the park is "done with spending money this cash whore." Aside from its poor capacity, it's arguably the most popular ride at the park among guests. However, I don't doubt the possibility that X takes may take the same route as Kings Island's Bat.

Griffon will be using magnetic breaks. They should also include Hershey if they are having a lawsuit for this because of Storm runner. Uh. The magnetic braking system in which the patent is supposed to protect does not include Intamin's variation of magnetic brake concept. There are over 3 different kinds of magnetic brake systems in use in roller coasters today. Otherwise, Cedar Point and Knott's Berry Farm would have been cited in the complaint along with Darien Lake, Busch Gardens Africa, etc.

SOB New Trains from Myrtle Beach
kraxleRIDAH replied to verticalzero's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Uh. You looked up the wrong Hurricane wooden coaster. That one is still standing. And if you're that upset about PTC trains (which are not bad) on Son of Beast, you'll probably committ suicide after seeing and riding Gerstlauer trains -- just thinking about Gerstlauer wooden coaster trains makes me hurt inside. They should probably just rename it to Son of Pain after being refitted with these "new" trains. This will be the end of SoB. Gerstlauer Pain Train on Twisted Twins -
^ The Texas Giant is still operating. You must be talking about Texas Cyclone? Flashback would take at least a week to dismantle. Keep in mind management is exploring the option to reassemble it in the future, so each bolt must come out one by one, each track and support removed carefully piece by piece.

I find it funny people would say Magic Mountain has no theming. Its Baja Ridge area has a distinct southwest feel and south-of-the-border landscaping; Samurai Summit has Asian architectural influences scattered about; Rapids Camp Crossing has a deep-in-the-woods camp feel with its lush woodland landscaping; Gotham City Backlot does a sufficient job at a faux downtown Gotham City; and High Sierra Territory gives you a mild taste of a recreational area in a national park. Non of it may be Disney-caliber, but it's still very noticeable if you look past the fact you're visiting a Six Flags park. You want to know what a park that has little to no theme looks like? Visit Elitch Gardens, Darien Lake, Worlds of Fun, or Cedar Point. Rides that have storylines or plots that don't match the area they reside in is not considered "no theming." That's completely different.

I will be so disappointed if the lot underneath Scream isn't "taken care" considering the park is redoing the parking area. Even if they don't rip out the asphalt beneath it, I hope to God at least they resurface it like they're doing with the parking area to hide the parking lines. It's Cyclone Bay. I'm sure the park has intentions on renaming the area in the near future seeing has how many new radical changes are occuring in that one section of the park and the "boardwalk" theme is pretty much disappearing.
