  1. Kennywood almost closed during the great depression. West View Park, Pittsburgh's other major amusement park was going strong. But I do agree if Kennywood survived the Great Depression and most parks didn't, they should. I just hope like already said, the fun day passes are not a good idea.
  2. News stations in the Pittsburgh region have reported that there will be lay offs from Kennywood, Sandcastle, & Idlewild. Lay offs include- dozen employees including mid- and upper-level management personnel are losing their jobs. When Kennywood was purchased, the company (Parques Reunidos) said in a released statement: "They've built Kennywood entertainment into an industry leader in family entertainment. We are anxious to continue the gold standard of entertainment they have established." I hope Kennywood pulls out of this slump and isn't to badly hurt by the economy. It's a shame. I hear Six Flags and Cedar Fair are also laying off workers. NOTE FOR PEOPLE THAT MIGHT NOT KNOW: Parques Reunidos was purchased in January 2007, by the private equity firm, Candover Investments - is a British-based private equity firm, specialising in arranging and leading large buyouts and buyins. Parques Reunidos headquarters are still in Spain though.
  3. I agree with Kennyweird, if nothing is wrong with the supports, why replace them? waste of money right now. I personally like the supports on the rides first hill/ lift hill. I don't think the pillars would look right on the lift or first hill. I just hope the alignment of the new track compared to the old track is not a really big problem. As said, if the ride isn't open for opening day, this will be a big dissapointment.
  4. Kennywood- 40 mintues away Sandcastle water Park- 40 minutes away Idlewild Park- 35 minutes away there used to be a park in Monroville near #1 Cochran where Spitzers auto is today (15 minutes away) and in Jeannette used to be Oakford Park closed a long time ago but the pool lasted but is now closed- the land is now just weeds (5 minutes away).
  5. That's true about the trains.
  6. I disagree, what about Dante's Inferno (dark ride) it wasn't sold at the auction along with the Cyclone. I'm sure a park would come buy that little ride. It was redone I believe in the late 1980's. Some speculate it may be a lost Traver dark ride? not sure if that's true. I've never rode the ride or even been to the park but the classic dark ride has some stunts and cars worth saving.
  7. Well since my other topic similar to this was locked, I'll just ask my question here, what kind of themeing would you guys and girls like Knoebels to give the ride and where do you believe the ride would be placed? Anyone else want to comment on my question? -Mine old classic themeing of tricks/ gags Praying for old tracy stunts and possibly place the ride near the Phoenix, toward the Wipeout and Fandango. Only problem is the road there. Knoebels is great at adding the new but adding and keeping the old. Prime example on how to run a great and successful amusement park. ONE OF THE BEST PARKS AROUND Hooray for Knoebels
  8. Finally, after so much speculations Knoebels amusement park has announced, that they in fact are the buyers of Morey's Pier Golden Nugget track and trains. As of right now it is a 2010 plan, Flying Turns is still top priority for 2009. Let's hope Knoebels makes an entire new ride with maybe classic dark ride tricks in the ride. Wonder where the park would place the ride? Anyone else want to comment? Very Exciting News!
  9. Hi I'm Mike, I'm 16 and live right outside of Pittsburgh PA (Harrison City- 40 minutes away from the city). I joined a few weeks ago and the members only forums are really cool. I have many books and other papers/ articles on parks. Sadly I've only been to very few parks, Kennywood, Idlewild, Lakemont, Delgrosso's, Knoebels Geauga Lake, and Disney World, and if you count Sea World Ohio (gone). I look forward to reading and talking to everyone.
  10. I have many books written by Charles J. Jacques: Kennywood Roller Coaster Capital of the world, More Kennywood Memories, Goodbye West View Park Goodbye, Idora Park Last Ride Of the Summer, Cinncinatti's Coney Island. Jim Futrells Amusement Parks of PA, & NY. I also have a good many books from Images Of America, one on Disney World, and 2 on Euclid Beach- Closed For The Season and A Second Look. All of these books are great especially Jacques, . The Images of America Amusement Park books are small and have alot of info but sometimes I wish they had more. These all are excellent books.
