robbalvey Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I got an email today from one of the ex-Oingo Boingo band members about a jazz gig that several of them are playing in Culver City on May 4th. Here's the info: Relative w/Steve Bartek Thursday, May 4, 2006 Oingo Boingo alums Avila, Bartek, Hernandez and Phipps, team up with multi-instrument threats Cartwright and Lacy for some friendly improvisation and mayhem. Bartek opines,"The band is about free improvisation between friends, using compositions by Sam and myself as a basis to interact, an excuse to play together and against each other. The music goes from calm to and chaos, like so many things in life, go figure, it's all Relative." Knowing the early jazz to bop, toon thru Raymond Scott, zydeco, horror flick, and second line influences coursing through these gents, things should get and stay interesting pretty quickly! And a link: http://www.cryptonight.com/module-pgcalendar-viewpub-tid-11-pid-63.htm I've heard these guys all play together before and if you go to the show you'll be in for a real treat! Best of all the show is free! --Robb
Erik Johnson Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Very cool. Are you going to be selling some T shirts at the event Robb?
robbalvey Posted April 21, 2006 Author Posted April 21, 2006 ^ What? No, this isn't a TPR thing, this is just a friend of mine who used to be in Oingo Boingo who still plays a few gigs here and there. --Robb
JamesMC Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I am not a big "Oingo" fan but I do own their greatest hits CD and "Dark At The End Of The Tunnel". "Out Of Control" is probably one of the best 25 songs ever!!!
