50 feet tall, 50 mph — new rollercoaster to debut at Western Playland

Dubbed the "Hurricane," it's the second large rollercoaster at the Sunland Park-based amusement park — or the third rollercoaster, if a children's ride is also factored in, said owner Pat Thomson.

"It is a little over 50 feet tall," he said. "It travels over 50 mph with bank turns 80 degrees and 4G force."

Thomson said he bought the rollercoaster used from a park in California and transported it to Sunland Park. It has been repainted and is nearly reassembled, he said.

"We'll almost finished putting it back together," he said. "We should have it ready mid-May to Memorial Day."

The support structure was painted blue, and the track is white, Thomson said. The rollercoaster features two trains of three cars apiece. Up to four people can fit in each car.

Thomson said new rides help "keep people coming back," the reason for the recent addition.

The park is open only on weekends now. But that will change as summer approaches.

"As soon as school gets out, we'll open weekdays, too, probably in mid-June," he said.

Nice to see that they're not gonna scrap the Hurricane. SDC Hurricanes are not bad rides at all. Small, but very forceful. Hurricanes may be SDC built coasters but they have the heart of a Schwarzkopf!

Hurricane (SCBB) was OK in my opinion. The diving turn was the only very exciting part of the ride. It became a bit more rough when it was getting closer to its removal date at SCBB.

Though, I do think it's good to see another park receiving Hurricane. Hurricane will probably become Western Playland's best roller coaster as the other two are just a Pinfari Zyklon and a Miler kiddie coaster.
