Hello Robb, Elissa, and the rest of TPR.

The wife and I will be in Los Angeles at the end of this month for a few days. We'll be going to the DLR and would also like to take in either Knott's Scary Farm or Universal's Halloween Horror Nights. We have both been to Knott's several times, but never during the Halloween season. We have never been to Universal at all. It would likely be Thursday the 29th that we would go to either Universal or Knotts. With those things in mind, can you give me the Pros and Cons to both events? I'm hoping that the experience of TPR members can help us to decide which we should go to.

Thank You.

I'm in the same boat as you, I'm getting into LA on Friday and I have never done a Halloween event ever.

Based on my research, the conclusion I came to is that Universal has the quality and Knotts has the quantity, but they both look like fun. I have enough time so I am doing both but if I had to choose between the two, my personal choice would be Universal.

Hopefully more informed members will be able to enlighten us further.

Theme Park Review's Halloween Horror Nights 2009 Report has been posted!

Once again Universal Studios Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights reigns as the best Halloween event in Southern California! You will not find an event this intense anywhere in So Cal! Every maze will leave you feeling like "OMFG HOW DID I SURVIVE THAT?!?!"

If you live in Southern California and you're going to any other Halloween Event...you've gone to the WRONG EVENT!!!

I guess that answers my question. It looks like it will be USH for us.

^ I would suggest USH, but if you've never been to the park you might want to look into whatever combo tickets they have so you can do stuff during the day and then HHN at night.

^ That actually raises my next question. I was looking into day/night combo tickets for us, but I also wanted to get front of the line passes. I didn't see an option for day/night tickets with front of the lines privileges available. Do you think front of the line passes would be all that necessary for Thursday the 29th? (Or possibly even Wednesday the 28th, since our schedule is still pretty flexible at the moment.)

Thanks.

You can upgrade your day/night ticket to a front of the line pass for somewhere in the $30-50 range if it is available (they do sell out). I would definitely recommend doing the upgrade, as it is the only 100% sure way to guarantee you will see everything. This year USH offered a "Frequent Fear" pass, so it is entirely possible that will make things a lot busier than you would expect on a weekday.

We went Thursday night and had an AWESOME time. It was crowded enough that I don't feel we missed out on any of the ambiance, yet not so crowded that we had any trouble getting everything done. The Terror Tram and the Saw maze were the highlights for us. The Saw maze was really like being right in the movies. It's still creeping me out just thinking about it. Thanks for the advice on which event to attend. We'll be back next year for sure.
