Vid_w Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I'm going to Lonodn tomorrow! It's a schooltrip, and it lasts for 5 days. I have a couple of questions: 1. Chessington and Thorpe Park are located relatively close to Lonodon, if I'm not mistaken. And I have 6 hours of free time on the last day. Do you think I could make it to one of those two, have some fun, and come back in time? Also, how to get there? 2. We have to choose one of these 3 things to see: madame tussauds London Bridge Experience British museum Which is the best? Thanks in advance, and please reply as quickly as possible, becouse I'm kinda in a hurry! Also, what are other cool things to do there, but don't consume much time? Well, I'm off packing now...
Fry Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 For Chessington and Thorpe you have to get the train from London Waterloo, which is just south of the river (it's next to the Eye) Chessington is about a 35 minute train to Chessington South, from which the park is a 10-15 minute walk. Thorpe on the other hand is a train to Staines, which is also about 35-50 minutes (get on the faster train!), but, it's followed by a bus which takes about 10 minutes and runs every 20 minutes. I honestly wouldn't know if six hours is long enough... You'd be able to run round and get on all the coasters at Thorpe I'd guess, but, it does take about an hour to get there, longer if you have to get the Underground to Waterloo! On the second question I would say do NOT do the London Bridge Experience, it is very, very... not good. Madame Tussauds is OK, but, I prefer the British Museum. I read History at a University about 3 minutes walk from the Museum so I've spent a LOT of time there, and it's a VERY interesting place. And, it's free! Madame Tussauds is better if you're more into famous people though. It depends if you want something educational, or a bit "light". As for cool things, the whole city is awesome! Just make sure you walk along the river, see Parliament etc. I also really like the zoo and surrounding park! Um, Monument is quite cool too, it's about 200ft tall, and you climb to the top and look! Canary Wharf is REALLY cool if you like just looking at modern architecture and the business side of London. Really, if you go to any sort of place in the centre, you'll find a LOT of choice for things to do!
max harvey Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 The london dungeons is definately worth going to imo, I thought it was really interesting. You should also go on the London eye. The view is amazing!
Vid_w Posted April 23, 2009 Author Posted April 23, 2009 Thanks! I'm thinking about doing Chessington, since it's closer, and has less rides, and thus I wouldn't be too tempted to stay longer than I could... 6 hours would have to be enough for that, right? Also, what's the entrance cost?
andyuk200523 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 EDIT - Looks like I got beaten to the posting! But anyways, hope this is useful! I'll answer question 2 first.....Madame Tussauds, however, I would strongly advise having pre-booked tickets as the queue to get in can sometimes reach up to 3+ hours!!! Q1 - Chessington and Thorpe are both easily accessible from Central London, Chessington though is definatly the easiest. Thorpe - There are regular trains running from Waterloo station to Staines station, from there you can get the 950 bus direct to the park, if you go on a weekday you will have no problems getting there doing most of the rides and getting back within your time limit. Chessington - Regular trains again are available from Waterloo station to Chessington South Station, the park is a 5/10 minute walk from the station Rail Timetables Again, at Chessington, getting all the rides done in your timelimit is easy on a weekday (as long as there aren't too many school trips in on that day you go!) Hope any of this is useful to you, enjoy London!! Andrew
andyuk200523 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 £33.00 to enter on the day, or £23 if you buy in advance on the website. London Dungeons is an awesome experience, and they have a drop ride and a flume ride with a "surprise" ending, however again, like Madame Tussauds, the queue is immense to get in!!!! I went 2 years ago with my partner and arrived at 09:30 and the queue was just over 50 minutes to get in the building! Great way to spend a morning though. Andrew
Fry Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 ^If you were to do the Dungeons, book on-line first! That way you don't queue!
andyuk200523 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 All well and good, but we had 2 4 1 vouchers! Couldn't use them online! And to be honest, I hadn't been there in about 14 years (since they had the midday execution (if anyone remembers that)) So didn't think the queue would be that bad......my own fault, I know in future though! Andrew
Purplepills Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I'll agree the Dungeons are fun, maybe more so than Madame Tussauds, although I haven't been for a few years. I think there is also a small drop ride now aswell as the boat ride. MT is okay but it is over fairly quickly, however there are loads of opportunities for really funny photos if its not too busy. I THINK they have a horror bit too which is a bit like the dungeons, although I might be getting the 2 confused. I can't really comment on the other two options you put as I haven't done them. I've done the science museum and that's pretty interesting, and is free aswell. Whatever you decide to do, have a good time!
andyuk200523 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Madame Tussauds do have a Horror section, it is called the "Chamber of Horrors" Pretty good, kinda like a teaser version of the London Dungeons. Yes the Dungeons do have a drop ride, it is something to do with a Hangmans Noose and the shock of the drop, not sure, but I believe this has replaced the Sweeny Todd barber section which I loved, scared the crap out of my wife! Andrew
larrygator Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Regarding Thorpe, that gives you enough time to get to the park, get on 2-3 rides and then head back. Choose Chessington for the quality time.
Vid_w Posted April 23, 2009 Author Posted April 23, 2009 Thanks everybody for their fast replies! I'll make sure to get to the Dungeons than, and maybe even Madam Tussauds, if there's time. I'll see about the themeparks tho... Seems a little too time consuming, but I'll see what i can do... Also, wasn't there some sort of amusement center in London, with an S&S drop tower?
Purplepills Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I think you mean the Trocadero centre that used to be Segaworld, it did have a Pepsi Max tower thing, but it's not there anymore, or at least it wasnt last time I went. Its basically a massive arcade with a few shops, a cinema and mini ten pin bowling. Theres also another arcade (Namcoworld?) By the London Aquarium.
