ReppinMoose
Hey everybody, so I'm going to be in Orlando in begining-mid October and most of my vacation will be centered around the Universal Studios Resort. So I have a few questions. First of all, what do you think the crowd will be like over there around that time? I'll be going to the theme park on a Thursday. Second of all, I'm staying at one of the resort's hotels and I was wondering if anyone knew about their "hotel guests skip the lines" thing they have going on. Third of all, I was wondering about the various rides they have over there; especially at Islands of Adventure. We'll have kind of a diverse group with myself as the lone coaster fan, are there a good amount of gentler rides there that are still fun? Thanks for all the help! cfc
There's plenty of variety at Universal, just like at Disney, so your group should do just fine. October is a great time to visit for two reasons: 1) weekday crowds should be quite manageable and 2) Halloween Horror Night at Universal Studios (which will be mobbed). If you do Horror Night, the Express passes are worth the extra money.

Staying on property is a good choice. I stayed at Universal's cheapest hotel last year and it was awesome. Every bit as nice as a Disney Deluxe hotel. They do you give you Express Passes if you stay on-property, which is a nice perk to have even if the parks aren't that busy. No line beats a short line. If you stay for just one night, Universal gives you Express Passes on both days. However, they do not give you Express Passes for HHN, at least they didn't last year. That costs extra. ReppinMoose
^Halloween Horror Nights. Oh I was reading about that. What's the deal with that thing? Does the real park close down that day to prepair for it? Or can you still go to Universal Studios during the day even if you don't plan on doing the Horror Nights? The park is open during the day for normal operations and closes for about an hour then re-opens for HHN. You can actually stay inside the park if you have a ticket for HHN that night (but nothing is open for that hour).

I've always wondered how they manage to check the tickets of the people staying in the park. I thought everybody was removed from the park till the HHN opening, but wasn't sure about that. Now you wrote that you can actually stay in the park, I really would like to know how they keep control over that.

They usually corral you into specific sections and when it's time to open for HHN, they have hand-held machines that scan your tickets.
