Possible amusement park for Ottawa

Recommended Posts

There is a Park in Ottawa, Ont. called Lansdowne Park. The park has a football stadium and a hockey arena right in the center of it. One of the stands of the stadium have stress cracks and need to be demolished. This has brought up the topic about redeveloping the whole park.

The stadium and entire park is very under used, since the Ottawa Renegades (CFL) have been suspended indefinitely. The only major events that happen at the park are; hockey games, concerts, a farmers market, and the annual summer fair (SuperEx).

The park is composed of 63 acres and half of it is parking lot.

When I picked up the paper on Saturday (Oct.27), the front cover had a topic about the redevelopment of the park. "10 cool ideas for Lansdowne" was the title. The first idea was an amusement park, which is very cool . 9 other ideas that aren't as cool IMO, followed.

I know this is probably not going to happen, because of our crummy city council. And it would be a very small park, but I'm sure a few coasters and a bunch of flats could fit in this space!

A park like Tivoli Gardens might work. I've been there. As I recall, admission is cheap and rides are extra. That works because in addition to attractions, it's also a very nice park in general. So, if it attracts those who just want to take a stroll, feed some birds, and maybe spend a few bucks here and there it could work out. Canada does need something for the millions who live between Toronto and Montreal, right?

^ Thank you! Finally someone agrees with me. All we have in Ottawa is a few "fun parks" with no rides, based for kids 3-11. There is a waterpark but that is a 40 minute car drive out to a ski hill with waterslides down the hill. No buses go there and not many teenagers have cars so it's very hard to get to. A small amusement park would fit perfectly there.

Well first we'd need more people to settle in the area so that "millions who live between Toronto and Montreal" was true.

Ottawa is only about 875,000 people. The area isn't as heavily populated as you'd think.

A small theme park might be able to survive however.

I think something like Tivoli might be able to do well in the Ottawa area. Something garish like Wonderland or La Ronde wouldn't fit well with the general tone and feel of Ottawa, which I always felt was more...dignified than Toronto or Montreal.

Although, I would ideally like to see the CFL return to Ottawa, but that's just not going to happen.
