Angry_Gumball Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 Today, I purchased a new Motherboard and processor hoping to easily upgrade my computer with more memory capacity and a more powerful processor. After spending who knows how long, I got everything connected and guess what...after hooking up the computer, nothing shows up on the screen...just the "No Signal" thing...that's it. After checking everything and reconnecting everything, turns out that the computer doesn't want to start up at all...just 1 second of power and it's off. Deciding I'm going to take everything back I put all the original parts back in my computer only to find out again, it doesn't want to start up...I have a feeling that I most likely fried something when connecting the wires...my fingers kept going elsewhere. Would a fried motherboard cause a computer to do this? And what would cause no video/image to be displayed when the computer's booting up? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I"m ready to chuck it somewhere and get it over with. Originally, this was just going to be a rant but figured I'd make it into a help topic instead.
Sean Menefee Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 Could be a power source issue?? Did you make sure the board was compatible with the power source in your box? This is a random as hell guess but if it's not doing anything at all I would start there. Any lights, fans, beeps, etc happening on the motherboard when you attempt to boot? How old is the computer you're replacing the board in? Any of the other tech savy folks here want to weigh in?
coaster1 Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 Check the power supply, if two boards are doing it, it's most likely a power supply issue or bad wiring from the power supply. Also .. you need to check that your motherboards and additional hardware aren't over using the power supply. Where your CPU, Memory, Video Card, Hard Drives, etc .. use alot of power .. so a 300Mhz power supply may not cut it with a new CPU, hence the power issue. But .. you can test it by using just video card, cpu and memory .. it doesn't need a HD to boot into the bios .. if you can get the bios .. you should be ok. If you get nothing .. then .. yeah .. you screwed up somewhere .. hate to tell ya that.
Angry_Gumball Posted September 4, 2006 Author Posted September 4, 2006 Good news is that I got the original running again. Not sure what would cause no display to come up with the new MB. I'm going to give it another shot as it's a new day and my patience level's back up again. Wish me luck.
Angry_Gumball Posted September 5, 2006 Author Posted September 5, 2006 Sorry about the double post but I did get my new motherboard & processor combo working...turns out that the guy gave me the wrong type of memory...(mine takes the DDR Type 2) and my previous motherboard/processor was defective. Now, I do have a question. I go to boot up the computer, boot up windows and I get the blue screen. So I popped in my Windows XP cd to 'repair'. Appearently, it kinda installed another Windows XP (I can now choose 3 windows XP's on my bootup). The one I normally choose does the blue screen. How do I fix this so I can get all my picture files and stuff back? I know they're still here because my C drive still shows 1 gig left. (I got way too many programs.) Any help would be appreciated.
WillMontu Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 They should still be there under the Documents and Settings folder. You may need to "unlock" it by setting yourself as the owner, but they should still all be there.
Angry_Gumball Posted September 5, 2006 Author Posted September 5, 2006 Still getting the "Access is denied" message trying to get into the "Owner" folder. I am set as the administrator as well.
Carnage Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 Well if you actually installed a new version of windows, then the old "my documents" folder will not be accessable from the new install, no matter what you do. (well it might depend on if you had your account password protected). Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you're trying to do what I think you are there's just no way around it.
Angry_Gumball Posted September 5, 2006 Author Posted September 5, 2006 My computer wasn't password protected...So basically, I lost all of my pictures and stuff on my C Drive? Well, technically didn't lose them as they're still there...but basically, I can't get to them no longer get to the pix or anything? (I can get to my program files and NL tracks.)
WillMontu Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 There is still hope. Assuming you use XP Professional (instead of XP home), try this. Just because you have a password doesn't mean that your stuff is encrypted. If you still have trouble, you may want to try sending me a Remote Assistance request (I promise I won't break anything) Select the "Owner" tab and set the owner to be Administrators, and make sure the check box is checked. Hit Apply, and this should (hopefully) unlock your stuff. When you disable Simple File Sharing, you should get a "Security" tab on the folder you are trying to get to. Click on the Advanced button From any Explorer window, click Tools menu and select Folder Options. Select the view tab, and uncheck the "Use Simple File Sharing" item at the bottom of the list.
Angry_Gumball Posted September 6, 2006 Author Posted September 6, 2006 That's going to do me no good...I have home edition, not pro....My last resort will be to take my computer into work and see if the computer whiz there can take a peek at it, or to fix my original Windows XP installation.
Angry_Gumball Posted September 9, 2006 Author Posted September 9, 2006 Ok...sorry for doubleposting again but I got everything to work out. WillMontu's explanation helped out once I figured out that on Home Edition you have to boot up in safe mode...then go into the security settings and do all that fun stuff. Thanks WillMontu for the help that I finally figured out!
