Review: Unwrapped Live: A Free Musical Experience

Recommended Posts

Tonight the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts hosted Theme Park Review for the presentation of Unwrapped Live: A Free Musical Experience. The show consisted of a unique musical ensemble including famed musicians Sheila E., Roy Ayers, Karen Brigg and the band FarYoung. The show brought star power and coupled it with incredible talent to present a unique experience for the eyes and ears to behold. Drums, saxophones, guitars and fantastic vocalists brought the audience to the feet several times throughout the evening with the Earth, Wind and Fire tribute finale leaving the audience risen for over five whole minutes!

The highlight of the show was easily Sheila E. who seemed to draw the largest crowd of those who were familiar. While she surprisingly did not sing despite having the background, she drummed throughout the show as a part of the ensemble for select songs and had several solo performances for which she could hold the spotlight. At one point in the show she drummed so feverishly that the drumstick snapped in half--and without missing a beat, she tossed the broken stick in the air and unsheathed a spare to resume playing with both hands.

Special thanks to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts for having us once again for another incredible show! While the show was only available for one night in Orlando, this show was a shining example of just how great it is to have such a world-class venue in the Downtown area. The Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts hosts musicals, theatre, dance, comedy and musical events and it is great to see something like Unwrapped Live come to the Orlando area.

Karen Brigg used her violin to present unique versions of well know songs like "Gangsta's Paradise" during the show.

"Butterscotch" is an extremely talented beat boxer who added a unique set of sounds to each song performed.

An Orlando-based band, FarYoung performed a small set as well.
