Backpacking through Europe

My parents just gave me permission to go on a four week European trip next summer with my friend Nate, the cliche (yet amazing) American high school graduation trip. But I have a bit of a problem...

 

Where do I start?

 

I'm not asking for specific places to visit or information on transportation (well, for now), but more like certain books and websites to help my friend and I figure out the best possible itinerary and to make sure that we don't overlook any hidden gems.
