Westcoaster Update - 08/09/2005 - OC Fair and Las Vegas

Just wanted to let everyone know we've posted our new updates. In these action packed um... updates, we take a trip to the OC Fair and make Dan spin around on a spinny bear ride... we visited Las Vegas and lost lots of money, and we have a look at the Disneyland Resort and some of the construction happening there. WEEEEE!! Anyhoo... check it out or don't... enjoy!

I don't know what happened, but I opened both updates in Firefox, and somehow, I clicked a tab somewhere, and it molded into one giant update. Good stuff James...

My only gripe about Vegas is the lack of gambling for those of us under the age of 21. Thank the Indians for Morongo!

Opus One is very well rated, rather fairly too I think. Like I posted on my site as well, it's all left up to personal taste. I personally enjoy big bordeaux blends, subtle reds from Burgundy and nasty ol' Tuscans... others like more simple wines... but I opt for the more complex wines more often than not.

As for Mondavi, I thought that since they sold to Constellation Brands, the family isn't directly involved with management anymore? Other than Tim actually working as "winegrower" overseeing the general process and direction of the wines of course. And currently Michael Salicci is the winemaker at Opus. So I'm not too sure what the Mondavi family/kids involvement have to do with it's well being.

^Just making the comment that if the Mondavi kids could just get along, this whole buy out by Constellation Brands would have never happened.

Don't get me wrong, Opus One is a great wine, but for the price... I think it's overrated.

I have friends that are grape growers, and used to sell to Mondavi. And they see great changes in the overall process. I'm just a little worried. Anyway... here are some photos I took last year before harvest. Enjoy!

I think the issue that I have with Opus One is shared by Luke over on my boards. They dilute their own brand by releasing new vintages every year. To me that's not a wine that deserves the prices they charge, I'll agree there. However... in certain years... it is absolutely worth the price. So I'm very picky when it comes to Opus... the vintage had in Vegas was 1997 and it was BRILLIANT! (As were most Napa reds that year.)

Anyhoo... since we're sharing photos... here's a few of mine...

^Very nice!

I have been fortunate to taste the 97 Opus. And I agree it was well worth the $25 taste. And I must also agree that 1997 was a good year for reds in Napa. The 1997 Stag’s Leap Cab is out of this world!!!!!!!!
