Earlier this year, myself, Rob (WW Goliath) and Toby (NemesisBloodZone) had a visit to SoCal.
Me and Rob had visited Knotts and Disney last year but Adventure City was a new park to us all. Here is a list of the major coasters/flat rides we rode at each park.
Knotts Berry Farm
Boomerang - A bog standard Vekoma clone. This seemed to have new restraints. They were big and bulky like SLC restriants. It was actually quite a smooth ride for a Vekoma but pretty boring.
Ghostrider - Every time we visit Knott's this has huge queues so we didnt get to ride it much. We did have 4 rides in the dark and i must say they were the best rides i have had on it. Loads of airtime. During the day it isnt so good and is pretty jerky in places.
Jaguar - Probably the best Zierer i have been on. Long, pretty forceful and a hint of airtime in one of the hills. Very well themed trains as well.
Montezooma's Revenge - A very intense Schwarzkopf shuttle loop. Unlike its cousin, Turbine at Walibi Belgium, it isnt braked as you come back through the station. If you are at the back on train you loads airtime going up the incline.
Silver Bullet - Last year, this wasnt at all forceful and very weak for a B&M. This year is has totally transformed. Lots of G's in helix at the end and nice float time in 3 places, if you havent been stapled in, in the overbanked turn, the Zero G Roll and the turn in between the 2 corkscrews. A very enjoyable ride now.
Xcelerator - Still the best coaster in the park. This year the op's were very keen to staple you in so not much airtime in the top hat. Still a fantasic launch and still my favourite hydraulic launch (and i have ridden TTD). Was quite unreliable at times, breaking down at least once a day due to the trolley not connecting to the train. It was only running 1 train, the other one is in bits near the transfer track.
Disneyland
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - Not as good as the French version but not bad. A tiny bit of airtime can be found on some hills.
Matterhorn Bobsleds - World's first tubular steel coaster, built by Arrow, opened in 1959 and still going strong. It is still a great ride if a bit rough in places.
Space Mountain - This was shut last year due to the recent refurbishment. It is a very good coaster, quite forceful, great music and funky looking trains.
Splash Mountain - This ride is part coaster, part dark ride, part log flume. It is very well themed and probably the best water ride i have been on.
All the rides in this park had massive queues. We queued an hour for Space Mountain. We used fastpass for Big Thunder and Splash Mountain. The best time to ride the Matterhorn was during the fireworks display, so we didnt see much of it but they seem pretty impressive.
Disney's California Adventure
California Screamin' - 2 new additions to this ride, 1 good and 1 bad. The bad addition is that trim brakes have been added to the ride. The one before the loop doesnt really affect the ride but the one before the 3 bunny hops has unforuntely ruined the airtime. You do still get some just not as much as you used to.
The good addition to this ride is an addition of a single ride queue. You just simply get a ticket from the op at the entrance, go up the disabled entrance/exit, get told to take the lifts up and then back down on to the station and if your lucky straight onto the train.
My highlight of the trip happened on this ride. We had just come down the drop after the launch, when the next block brake was turned on (the trains normally go through them without any problem), this caused the train to slow down a lot. As we came on to the lift hill the train stopped. I later noticed that a train had stopped on the next block brake. I was later to find out one had stopped outside the station as well. About 10 mins after we stopped some ride op's came up to us and said we would have to have an evac. After about 20 mins we were all of the train. Me, Rob and Toby were all on seperate trains and they all stopped on brakes.
Mullholland Madness - A very boring Mack mouse. With some of the hills tamed a bit. We only rode this once. It also has a single rider queue.
Twilight Zone Tower of Terror - The best flat ride anywhere at Disney. Brilliantly themed, good pre-show and fantasic ride. Cant wait for the Paris version, which isnt going to have the Twilight Zone themeing.
Soarin' Over California - So many people have been raving on about this ride, we thought we would give it a try. This ride also has a single rider queue but we lucky enough to get on the same ride. It is the best simulator i have been on. For people you havent ridden one, rather than sitting down with a floor you are sitting in a seat with you legs dangling. Not sure if this ride is Vekoma or not but at the end it felt very haunted swing ish.
Adventure City
A small little park, which is only 2 miles from Knotts. It is due to shut sometime this year but it didnt look like a park that was shutting down. They have 2 coasters and a few kiddie rides. The coasters were:
Freeway Coaster - A small kiddie coaster with a train themed as different motor vehicles. Quite painful and not to bad for a kiddie coaster.
Tree Tops Racers - A Miller Wild Mouse type ride. It has single seater trains. It sounded very ropey as it dropped down some of the drops. Some good headchoppers and a nice helix at the end.
I wouldnt visit this park specially unless you are visiting Knotts and want something else to do.
A very good trip and hopefully the same will happen next year
