I think it was a state decision. If I remember correctly, the incident happened during a test run and there were no riders.
I meant a bystander got struck.
By the way, does NJ have the most strict "safety" regulations of any state? Or does that "honor" go to California or some other state?
I'm not sure about it having the most strict safety regulations, but I'd imagine they're pretty strict. As someone in Canada (i've heard we have some relatively strict regulations when it comes to rides), this seems like overkill. At my home park, they'll allow guests to walk pretty much under Leviathan, during parts of the ride where it's running from 60-90+ mph.
I'm not blaming this on the state tho, IMO, it was the park's fault. It was pretty stupid on the park's part for not checking into things like this. I always thought parks had to check with local regulations and provincial/state governments before they even started building, but I guess SF's exempt from this Even worse, this isn't the first time SF's run into trouble with local regulations... Remember SFDK's V2?

^ Seeing how much you complain about the state government in NJ, just move. Give California a try if you don't like stupid government decisions.
Also, what's this I hear about Ka's restraints? Have they gotten the I-305 vests? Or are you guys calling those stiff bars a vest?
I don't live in NJ (I'm Ohioan.) But they seem even more controlling on amusement parks than CA. I'm sure there's some way a rider on the outside edge of SEFK could toss items at LL riders, but CA didn't force timing like this.
I'm pretty sure that if you offered to pay the insurance premium differential, Six Flags would change the ride.
Well, is it an issue of SF not being able to pay for the insurance to run both rides at once?... If so, I now understand the claims that cf is better off financially than SF.
Also, shouldn't the park have realized that issues like this could've occurred *BEFORE* building the ride? I always thought parks had to look into stuff like this before they even broke ground.
In regards to the restraints, I was referring to the fact that TTD just uses lapbars, whereas Ka doesn't. I remember reading somewhere that GAdv wasn't allowed to use the TTD style restraints, & therefore had to come up with the ones found on Ka.

Funny how these giant 300ft and 400ft modern day drop towers have nothing on an Intamin 1st gen when it comes to that stomach in your throat feeling.
Seems like the second gens do an ok job too! It's the only ride where I lose my stomach every time!

^^This. 1st Gens give more airtime than any S&S tower I've been on. I will admit however that Moser drop towers give some decent airtime as well.
I've only rode the 2nd gen towers, but I loved them, and found them to give amazing airtime. How much more air would you get on the 1st gens?
Also, never rode a moser tower. I saw footage of a portable one a few years ago, & it looked like a travelling 2nd gen. Anybody here managed to get on one?
-
^Ok, got it.
Still sucks to hear that the drop is so forceless though
-
^No, I just got his drug test results back... He's clean. The fact that he was able to mention a park in the same country as Drayton Manor proved that... I believe he was suffering from too much exposure to the "69 Gforce" that's felt on the "Death ride to doom"
Stick with riding the good ol' intamin towers kids! Or you'll end up like that guy!
-
^^^I don't get this either. Seeing as the ride's made by intamin, I'd imagine it'd be the exact opposite of an S&S. I'm also thinking the gondolas are to blame, though. Anyone on here done the Australian version at Dreamworld?... Was it just as "meh"?
Also, sorry if this sounds stupid, but if the two rides (Ka and Zoomie) can't run at the same time, why were the roofs put on the cars in the first place?

^Been on a couple S&S towers with good programs that offer 2 good pops of ejector air, but I'd take the wild, outa control feeling, and airtime filled Intamin drops in a heartbeat .
IMO, after thinking about it, the airtime on the Intamin 2nd gens (giant drops) I've rode is nearly perfect... A good strong pop at the start, that's somewhere in between ejector and floater, and then you just hang in zero g for the whole length of the drop. The only thing that could make the ride better would be an S&S style program, with a launch, a few "bounces" then a slow climb to the top, with the long, airtime filled drop we all love being the grand finale. Not sure if something like that would be possible, but if it is, I hope someone from intamin reads this thread . It's a shame to hear these new 3rd and 4th (SFMM/GAdv) gen towers don't offer as forceful a drop, but at least it's good to know that parks are still adding drop rides.
Finally, another good point that I just remembered about the Intamins, is the fact that they're the originals. Without the almighty 2nd gen, there would be no drop towers as we know them today.

Saw this comment on a POV of Apocalypse at Drayton Manor
If you think this is scary try the death tower/death ride to doom a leaning tower which is 72ft and you drop down and in the middle the tower actually feels like its falling, but here's the fun bit you ride up so fast 330 mega spin and then you drop down 360ft and with 69 Gforce. All at London DungeonsI'm no medical expert, but I think 69G is just a little too high, don't you think???

I wonder how much ka's capacity is going to be diminished due to NJ's bs regulations.
Wasn't the whole reason Intamin came up with the vest restraints on their rocket coasters due to problems at GAdv as well?
-
Ednor at La Ronde
Everything after the lift removed and replaced with smooth B&M Track back to the station (Clearly the worst SLC I've been on.)
So just scrap it & go ride Vampire then?... Or build another B&M?
-
^^^ Amazing video regardless!
This looks like one of the best rides in existence. Can CW please tear down their SLC and Volar to make room for a clone of this beast?... It's one clone I'd be VERY happy to have!
-
B&M will never cater to enthusiasts unfortunately, they never have other than revolutionizing the invert.
Well, IMO, it seems like they used to, ex. 90s/early 2000s B&M. Maybe it wasn't specifically to enthusiasts, but they certainly made much more intense, exciting ride. In recent years, it seems like they've "gone soft", focusing so much on "perfection" that their rides turn out forceless.
Maybe this is their comeback?
-
^^Well, those lapbars hold you in pretty good during the airtime, and yesterday, the high winds made it feel like we might stall, and I'd imagine it would've held me in pretty good if it happened.
-
Believe it wil be CW's 2016?attraction, and not due to the French name.
If you look at the trends of the coasters they've gotten since cedar fair took over CW, it fits perfectly. It seems to follow a four year pattern, with the names matching up with the Olympic Venues for that yeàr:
2008 - Behemoth - Beijing
2012 - Leviathan - London
2016 - Rougarou - Rio
Yes, this may be a coincidence, and I may be overthinking it, but just wait and see in two years.
-
^Agreed. I rode Leviathan yesterday, and one of the over banks felt nearly inverted.
-
I understand like jumping is considered rude by many people, but at every park I've been to, nobody cares. Actually, most people dontvreport them because they feel "sorry" for the line jumpers, saying how they want to "stay with their friends and are doing no harm".
As for a solution, I'd say the best way would be to scan wristbands that guests are given at the park entrance when guests enter the line, them again at the station... If the scans don't match, they don't ride.
Yes, I understand that system wouldn't be perfect, but it's the only thing I can think of off the top of my head.
-
^Whileci have rode a larson tower, I have to say the most intense, and my favourite drop tower would have to be Drop Tower at Canada's Wonderland, a 230' Intamin 2nd gen tower.
A close second would be the SS&S double shot tower in the West Edmonton Mall. It has a nice forceful launch, and two great moments of ejector air.
-
^That actually sounds awesome! . Some of the second gen towers already take you to the top pretty quick. Surprised they never incorporated a launch.
-
^Agreed. I find the drops on intamin towers to feel the least "controlled" out of all the ones I've ridden, even the ARM towers. The S&S towers I've done have stronger, more "ejector airtime, but cause it doesn't last all the way down the tower, it makes them a lot more "fun", rather than "intense" like the Intamins.
-
Airtime: S&S
WTF factor : Intamin
PPH capacity: Intamin
Fear Factor : Intamin
Uniqueness: S&St
Overall : Intamin
Review done.
That sums up my opinion perfectly.
S&S is fun, intamin is all about intensity.

^Well, maybe DL isn't getting the wood looper, but I believe that inverting woodies is something this company will do. GCI was the only major wood company to not jump on the looping woodie bandwagon in 2013... Maybe they were just late to the party?
-
^Still, that's really great to hear!

Nothing better than the Zipper in terms of flat ride experience, I always get disappointed if I'm at a carnival with no Zipper
Agreed. Recently, a local show who puts on the carnival in my town sold their zipper It made me realize how sh*ty all the other rides they had (appart from the ARM tower, which was basically a mini intamin second gen in terms of ride experience) were compared to it.

My only problem with leviathan, is that to me, it seemed that CF was copying their formula they did with CP. Similar kind of airtime hill filled ride like Magnum when they built Behemoth, & then Leviathan was just a shortened version of MF. Not that it's a bad thing (I don't have to drive all that way to CP to get an MF like experience ), but I would've liked it not to be a near clone!
As for this ride, between this prepossessing layout, & banshee
, it seems like b&m'a making a comeback!
