  1. GL looks fun enough just watching it, but as others have said, riding it is a whole other story. Something about the forces just isn't right (and our car didn't even flip all the way upside down).
  2. Good thing they're going to "look at the instruction manual" (1:15) as part of setting up the ride.
  3. ^ Very cool, I didn't know it was such a rare ride. I do remember there was once an accident on the ride relating to one of the fabric doors, where a girl's foot was somehow impaled upon locking the door. The ride's door were then replaced with more conventional metal doors. In other news, the old teacups ride is still up for sale! http://www.italintl.com/detail_page.php?record_id=1026
  4. When I worked as a Ride Host at Cedar Point, I usually rode solo on the required morning test run. I usually worked Gemini, and very occasionally Skyhawk. And most of the rides at SCBB -- Giant Dipper, Hurriance, Fireball, Double Shot, Pirate Ship, Haunted Castle, Speed Bumps (if that counts!)
  5. I bet you could find a lot people at the company who aren't happy with it.
  6. ^ I think that's exactly what they were going for: keeping parts their history intact while staying current. But the problem is, some things never go out of style. The old Boardwalk logo was one of those things.
  7. Giant Dipper's speed does vary by a wide margin, but I do believe it reaches 55 mph on a hot day after the ride has been running for at least a few hours. The only place it would reach that speed is at the bottom of the first drop.
  8. I don't think the Boardwalk invested in CGI video the ride, but there are a few other coasters that currently have the exact same layout as Undertow, and I'm sure there are POVs of those on YouTube. A bad experience in what way on Crazy Surf?
  9. According to Wikipedia... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_California (from Oregon border through Santa Cruz County) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_California (Monterey County only [on the coast]) edit: I don't think there is any technical official designation of a dividing line between Northern/Central/Southern California. But I think it's generally agreed that Santa Cruz County is a part of Northern California.
  10. I don't think Gold Striker sets a wooden coaster speed record for Northern California at 53.7 mph. Giant Dipper is 55 mph.
  11. ^ That's all very true. I was just thinking they could've at least incorporated something like Winjas tilt and drop track. Just a little something extra.
  12. I think the main reason is that an El Loco is nearly twice as tall as the XC-2000 (50' vs. 100'), and anything taller than Hurricane is out of the question. When you add on the height of the deck, and El Loco would top out at around 130' tall (which is taller than Double Shot), and would likely never be approved by the city. ------ To add another perspective to the new ride announcement, I'm a little disappointed that the park couldn't craft a custom design for the ride, especially with all the space clearing they will soon be doing in the area. Too add to that, Hurricane was only supposed to be a 10 year ride, which would mean it should have been removed in 2002. With over 10 years to think up a plan for a new roller coaster for the deck, I'm surprised the Boardwalk didn't want something really special and unique. It's going to be a great ride, and I'm really looking forward to it, but I can't help but think they took the easy path, picking a ride that can easily be packed up and shipped out when its time for the next ride (which may have been the plan all along). TL;DR: The Boardwalk it known for its unique rides (Dipper, Cave Train, Haunted Castle, Fright Walk). Why not add to that collection with a custom layout that incorporates something unique and different, instead of going with the off-the-shelf model.
  13. Rumor has it that riders were hurting their necks on the ride, so they closed it down modified some of the track sections.
  14. ^^ The new procedure is that a train will not move forward from the back brakes into the station until the other train is past the tunnel and on the lift hill. This will help prevent a collision. Agreed about Wipeout!
  15. Yeah, it's an odd situation. I'm mostly speculating, but I think CGA pulls in pretty decent attendance numbers in the summer. And the greater San Jose area still loves CGA's "historical" roller coasters and rides (read: nearly all of CGA's rides). And you know why? Because they don't know any better! There's practically no bay area competition for theme parks. Between CGA and SFDK, I would wager that most guests go to both parks over the course of a season. Yeah, some may prefer one park over the other, but the parks are both doing good business. Another point, is that I would consider CGA more of a regional park than a destination. Meaning, that for a theme park, they don't get a high level of tourists visiting the park. Which means they can rest easy with all of the locals who continue to patronize the park in the summer no matter if a new ride is added. It's the same reason why Raging Water San Jose went almost 10 years without adding a new slide. Because it's the only water park in the area. Yes, it sucks for anyone who has been to any other water park across the country and realizes what a dump it is, but for the park visitors, they don't know any better! They've been going there for years and don't have anything better to compare it to. The park is still hitting the marks, so why put more capital into it?
  16. ^Right! I'm big on efficiency, and I'm fine riding next to strangers on any ride with divided or separated seats, or, a bench seat with enough room to sit comfortably. But there are a small number of rides where it just doesn't make sense to pair up riders.
  17. Another note about our trip to the fair I didn't mention: Our first ride of the day was going to Butler's new portable log flume ride. I've never been on one before and was semi-excited to try it out. We get up to the station platform and the operator directs us to quickly enter the log slowly moving through the station. The only problem was, there were already two larger gentleman sitting towards the front of the log, and with no middle seat divider, I wasn't comfortable sitting behind these strangers. I asked the operator if we could wait for the next log. Keep in mind there were only a few people in line behind us. The next thing I know, the operator is yelling at us to "get in the log, NOW!" -- so I said, "fine, we're not riding," as I turn and started to walk back through the queue. This appeared to aggravate the operator even more, although he didn't say anything else to us, looking back, I could tell he was upset about it. I've got a message for you, Butler: Your log flume should accommodate one group of people at a time! The logs just aren't long enough to fit more than 2-3 adults comfortably. I understand that your goal is to fill the rides as efficiently as possible because it could positively effect your bottom line. But, your undivided log flume just can't hold two groups of two adults comfortably in the same boat. I would rather not have a stranger's ass creep towards my girlfriend's crotch as we climb each lift hill (and I don't think she would be too keen on it either). If you want to pair up groups of similar aged kids, go ahead and so do if they can fit comfortably. But I'd rather not be skin tight against some unknown guys backside. For what it's worth, I watched the flume later in the day and saw plenty of logs taking their course with only two riders. Although, we decided not to ride. I didn't feel like dealing with the same operator as we did earlier. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, I tend to agree. I'd go once every 5 years or so, and maybe more if Butler got a few new rides (or if another company was brought in to do the show all together) 2009, I believe. I rode it at the San Mateo County Fair a few years back, but I suppose that's not lately... It isn't even listed on Butler's website as a ride they own...
  18. ^^^ They still have the exhibition halls filled with vendors and one exhibit for each county in California. Kind of fun to walk though. And they have a permanent building where they concerts and also temporary exhibits such as "Everything you could possibly want to know about Sunmaid raisins." They did pass out free raisins, which was nice. ^^ I'd like to hear your story! ^ That ride is just so so bad it's not even funny.
