  1. The "Cyclone" may have it's revenge for being "razed".

    Link: http://www.southportforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50367615

Southport.gb.com understands that an Asbestos Survey was carried out in Pleasureland Southport at the end of November 2005. The survey included the Cyclone sheds, Sultans Palace, Training Facilities; River caves Backyard, Electrical Workshop, Engineering Brew room, and the Pitstop.

SGB believes that asbestos was found in the shed roof below the Cyclone and still remains there today. The retaining wall between Pleasureland and the zoo contains asbestos, and many other buildings due for demolition on the Pleasureland site contain asbestos.

There was NO sign of a licensed specialist contractor dealing with the asbestos under the Cyclone or the wall when OTS visited the site today (Monday 20th November 2006).

    FACTS: Asbestos waste removal

All repair/removal work should be carried out by someone trained and competent to carry out the task.

Asbestos waste, whether it be small amounts or large quantities may only be disposed off by a licensed specialist contractor. Asbestos waste should be double bagged in heavy-duty polythene bags (minimum 500 gauge) and clearly labelled with the label prescribed for asbestos, before it is transported to the disposal site. Asbestos waste can only be disposed at a site licensed to receive asbestos waste

  2. Woodies are "rare" in the UK and losing one today is a great shame.

Thanks alot and shame on you Amanda.

Riding on an old woodie coaster is an honour, yes they are't the same as say "Hades", but if it was not for the "Classic" coasters you would not have the modern woodies today.

Just give it praise for being built at that time for everyone to enjoy the ride.

I think the "Big Dipper" at BPB is slow and nearly stalls on the hills, but I don't knock the ride for being out of date.

Thanks for the rides over the years and RIP Cyclone.

  3. The SOB was my roughest woodie to date, but still enjoyed the ride as I had to endure a 9 hour flight with Air India then a 4 hour drive to get to Kings Island.

I put them blame on the Parks for not looking after their "woodies" and they become rough over the years.

They need lots of TLC, re-track every few years and a nice coat of "White" paint for the Classic's.

With Balder, Colossus, and El Toro, these coasters will be easier to look after as each segment can be "replaced" if needed. This could be the way forward for future woodies.

As for MS at Cedar Point: I did not have the trim brakes on when I rode it in 2000 (when were trims installed..?). Why not ask the operators if the brakes can be switched off down the 1st drop.

You get slammed quite hard into the lapbar on the 3rd drop and there is much vibration from the trains of "Robin Hood" at Walibi World, but all in all this coaster runs fine.

The general public complain about coasters being "too fast / rough / shaking" etc and ask for the ride slowed down, this is the worst thing which can happen to your fav coaster either Wood or Steel.

The perfect woodie for all coaster lovers is "trimless" until the proper brakes kick in at the end of the ride.

"Colossus" comes close to my perfect woodie, the helix needs to be addressed as this is bumpy.

Come on Mr Bill Gates splash ur cash to Six Flags / Cedar Fair and all the other Parks in the USA to help install new rides and give their existing coasters an upgrade.

  4. CoasterFanatic -

I just "love" NAD trains and how they look, there is nothing in the UK which comes close to these type of cars.

I do like the Millennium Flyer Trains, but for " retro coolness" the NAD's beat them.

Any other train/cars have "twin working" headlights..

I don't like the "Grand National" or "Big Dipper" cars at Blackpool, they are 2 crampted. Wild Mouse cars also at BPB look great though.

  5. I know this is not the best woodie, but just out of intrest is this coaster any good and worth the trip to check out the lovely looking NAD trains..?

Do the Front Lights work at night..?

I may go to Kings Island and Camden Park is only a couple of hours drive away.

Would you want to see more NAD trains used on woodies..?

  6. I visited the "Plopsaland" twice this year, I rate it, it's tidy, staff are friendly, lots of kids rides, a Star Flyer and Supersplash.

What they could add soon is a Wooden Coaster on the lines of "Falken"

It's nearer for me to come to this park via the Channel tunnel and drive through France than it is to drive to Alton Towers.

    Plopsaland = 2.5 hours

    Alton Towers = 3 to 3.5 hours

  7. As I live in a country that has only 3 maybe 4 decent "woodies", I just want say how lucky everyone is who lives in the USA.

You have El Toro, The Voyage, Shivering Timbers, Tremors, Wildcat etc

You are def spoilt with Wood coasters.

These types of wood coasters would never be created in the UK.

The Best woodie in the UK is "Megafobia", this is what our Parks need more of, for some reason the parks here do not want to built wood coasters.

I hope Alton Towers can get permission to build a Woodie in 2008, they need one.

I just love the layout / Fan Turns / Camelbacks hills / NAD trains and Bunnyhops of "Classic" Out n Back (Starliner) Pre 70's woodies.

I have been on Cedar Point's "Blue Streak" and Kings Island "Racer" and they were outstanding and so much fun, there is nothing like these in the UK.

I have never been on "Starliner", loved to though. Why is it so bad? Is it the speed, rough, slow?

I can see your point as a bad coaster "Robb", but it could need some TLC to get it back on top form. Maybe the move to a different park might give the woodie a boost and it starts to perform well.

All the best with the park for saving "Starliner" a John.C. Allen's "Classic" Out n Back.

  8. Why "scrap" Starliner..? It is a wood and of a classic design.

These type of woodies are getting few and far between, give it some NAD trains for the old look style.

I hate the SLC being built at BPB and will never ride it.

I have been on the original at Walibi World and that was "headache" enough.

"Booster" bike's need to have a better design/layout, they need some diving loops and in-line twists before they are any good.

"Eurofighters" have a 2 compact layout, give it a long out n back / twister layout.

Good luck to Cypress Gardens and hope the "Starliner" runs for years to come.
