I'm looking for some haunted spots in Southern California (Prefer Inland Empire or Orange County) to check out on Halloween. I want something that's actually scary with a backstory to it. Anyone have suggestions?

Brent's Knott's Scary Farm Adventures

If you haven't been to Knott's this year, get over there, NOW! I just got back and was blown away by one particular maze called DOLL FACTORY. I'm not going to give anything away but imagine the budget of GRUDGE 2 MAZE with the creativity and acting of KNOTT'S. If you've ever wondered how much a "scareactor" makes a difference, get to this maze NOW! Almost half the actors are female and they all give Oscar worthy performances. They even recruited the GRUDGE girl from last year, known to contort at your feet, to imitate a doll down to the last virgin footstep. 10/10 - This is the new standard. -
Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood Overall the quality of the mazes at HHN was suprisingly good. The tram ride (Horror Tram) was quite a relief from the typical walkthrough maze. Although it did feel a little short and the scares weren't as personal, the overall ambience and themeing from actual horror sets made all the difference. The Asylum was the second of three mazes and was equally impressive. Theme and scares were abundant and the quality of acting was, shall I say, superior to that of the "other" asylum. I found myself jumping quite a few times and other times marveling at the sets. House of Horrors was sort of a let down mostly because it was no different than the Van-Helsing house, save a few freddy kreugers and werewolves. Although the scares were there and the themes were good I felt a little ripped off considering I had paid for an experience other than the norm. The scare zones were extremely well themed and haunted. In Comparison to Knott's I felt that they were done with much more finesse and detail. Instead of having shaker cans in my face I had an actual monster who stayed in character with snorts, taunts, and just overall creepiness. Maybe real actors make better monsters? In conclusion, with a few more mazes and a little more effort Universal will be right in the running with Knott's. Top 3 Mazes + Scare Zones Asylum: Overall: 12 Ambience: 4 Talent: 4 Scares: 4 Horror Tram: Overall: 10 Ambience: 5 Talent: 3 (would be a 2 but tram operator was hilarious) Scares: 2 House of Horrors: Overall: 8 Ambience: 3 Talent: 2 Scares: 3 Scare Zones: Overall: 10 Ambience: 4 Talent: 3 Scares: 3 Total: 40 out of 60 Knotts Scary Farm The king of all haunts, I went in expecting maybe a little too much and came out somewhat dissapointed. Although in some aspects it met and exceeded my prediciton, I still left the park feeling unsatisfied. With over ten mazes Knott's clearly has the upperhand in quantity but most of them suffer in quality. Out of all twelve mazes I only got scared in three of them. That means i spent 20-30 minutes of walking through mazes in total, without a single scare. Perhaps the best maze "The Grudge 2," was scary for reasons other than someone behind a corner. The maze was not only extremely well themed, probably due to a large budget courtesy of Sony pictures, but it was well acted. Another equally impressive maze, "13 Axe Murder Manor," was well detailed and well acted. I often had to stop myself in the middle of the maze in awe of the awesome sets, twirling bookcases, huge open scenes and lots of gore. If this maze fell short in anything it was its scarcity of actors. A surprise to me was "Red Moon Massacre." I often hear people saying that they should change the maze because its been a resident maze/ride for so long. After my ride was over I realized exactly why it hasn't and SHOULD NOT change. In all honesty, I jumped more in this maze than any other maze in Knotts and Universal. The ambience of the ride is so well done that it makes you feel like your literally in a log, riding in a river through woods haunted with werewolves. With nobody in sight to "steal" a scare from you its easy to be startled. The actors were also excellent as they hit every scare with precision. I applaude Knotts for not changing a thing to this ride, because they shouldn't. One thing that left me wanting more were the scare zones. Although the sliders were amazing and some of the actors were in character and just downright professional scarers, something was awry. I realized that in comparison to Universal, Knotts was extremely bright. Throughout most of the park all the lights were on and it really took away from the ambience. Although Knotts did have some shortcomings they still came out on top, congrats to them once again. Top 3 Mazes + Scare Zones The Grudge 2: Overall: 11 Ambience: 5 Talent: 3 Scares: 3 13 Axe Murder Mansion: Overall: 11 Ambience: 5 Talent: 3 Scares: 3 Red Moon Massacre: Overall: 12 Ambience: 5 Talent: 3 Scares: 4 Scare Zones: Overall: 10 Ambience: 3 (too much light) Talent: 4 Scares: 3 Total: 44 out of 60 Knotts needs to beef up their mazes and scares. In fact, I think they should get rid of 3 mazes and use the resources to create a new maze and add additional actors to the old ones. Yes, Knotts is still the best, but Universal is breathing down their neck.[/b]

Just got back from USHH last night. I must say that I have a bit of a mixed review for them. First off, the mazes (2 of them) and overall theming of the park was fantastic, dare I say BETTER than Knotts. Universal took it beyond smoke and dark places and actually made a unified scare zone. The Terror Tram was by far the best thing they had which is no surprise. But with a 110 minute wait an hour after the park opens it just kills all the joy. I was constanlty pushing just to walk around the park and they easily sold too many tickets. I know they are trying to make a good buck but they should moderate their ticket sales for everyones enjoyment. The Asylum was very well done but would have been 10 times better if they had people go in groups like most houses. The crowd and line was so long that they just had people streaming in and it really took away from the experience. I missed at least two or three scares because five people in front of me were getting hit with it all. Jurassic park in the dark was good in the beginning but once we got inside you can't see anything, not even the raptors. Still fun. Did not even think about waiting 80 min. for the mummy lol skipped most of the shows and just decided to hit the scarezones, all very well done. Overall. Like almost all reviews, I think Universal has the ability to take Knotts title as the premiere haunt. They do need at LEAST two more houses and a little more scare actors, crowd control also. If they can get those down then Knotts has a lot to worry about.

Your correct.. I can't bring myself to go back to six flags for one ride but since my roommate gave me great reviews I may make the trip.. I have ridden stealth when it was at PGA and was dissapointed. Since then flying coasters dropped off the map for me, but I will give it another try. -
So after reading some threads and a few captions on photos from the Japan and UK tour it seems that there is some animosity towards knott's whats the deal? Now I know I am gonna get flamed but I think Knott's is easily the best Amusement park in California. It's main competitor (six flags) cannot hold a candle to most of its properties. I didn't put disneyland because in my humble opinion I don't think any park can compete with the disney empire. It constructed it's own niche and adopts followers before most of them hit 1st grade. back to Magic Mountain, what a disgrace. It's no wonder they are thinking of selling the park for more land to build houses on. I once remebered a day when Six Flags was actually a family oriented park. Now I love my thrill rides but you don't just build a plethora of steel coasters and say "Hey our park is the best because we have a lot of mediocre rides!" There are very few rides worthy at MM.. Goliath, Viper, Deja Vu (when its up), Superman (when its up), Riddler and revolution everything else is crappy INCLUDING 'X' which does nothing more than bash our heads against the seats. Knott's on the other hand, thanks to "Cedair Fair" has accquired many QUALITY rides in addition to their old favorites. Xcelerator is a Fantastic! ride!.. I believe that this is the single best roller coaster in California. It's intense and well themed Plunge - can't say no to a fifty foot wall of water Log Ride - I believe this ride and its many awards speaks for itself.. second only to splash mountain at Disneyland Ghost Rider - put the west coast on the map as far as woodies are concerned Silver Bullet - It's ok... but its better than batman or top gun which seem over before they start Big Foot Rapids - So many parks have copied the "yeti/sasquatch/bigfoot" water theme from this ride it's funny.. still the best Boomerang & montezuma's revenge - a classic and probably only remain because they are so respected Then there is knott's scary farm which is very welll put together and themed. I think it's safe to say that apart from HHN this is the premiere haunted park attraction so everyone give knott's a break, i believe all they need is one good dark ride and the park will have everything to please anyone

USH doesn't have the resources to match what UO's capable of. The tram tour is about the only advantage... but didn't someone die the last time they used that at HHN? Ok sorry I'm not trying to be mean but HHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAH Have you ever been to USH? They make movies there! I am a New York Film Academy student and we are constantly on the back lot filming. They have this huge wardrobe wearhouse with just about every single costume and prop ever used in every movie (including horror movies). There are like a million sound stages and they are enormous, so they will probably be used for one or two mazes. We also have the largest escalator in the USA, I dunno they could do something with that but its pretty awesome. C'mon man we make movies here, and we dont have the resources? Your USF was modeled after ours... OMG!!!11 DEY M@KE M0V!ES DERE?!?!?!? DAT' SO K00L!!!1111 ROFLZLOLZ!!!111 Do you actually think it matters how many random props or costumes USH has lying around? Or that they're going to instantly make USH some kind of Halloween utopia? If the rumored number of house(s) I've heard for USH turns out to be true, you're in for a rude awakening. I'm gonna take a wild guess that USH doesn't have "like a million" soundstages, and that 99.9% of them can't actually be used for HHN anyway, being a busy movie studio and all. But then again, what do I know? Oh, I almost forgot to ask. What's USH's normal parade route look like? And where is it's lagoon(s) located, in case they want to utilize it (them) for a special show? Where do they usually set their fireworks off from, for said show? Oh... you mean USF wasn't modeled after USH at all? Imagine that. But hey, at least you've got that nifty... uhhm... escalator. So whats the "Rumored" number of houses supposed to be, and sources? There is no competition against USH.. the only thing USF has going for it is its better mummy ride and IOA. Other than that the studio tour pretty much beats anything you can throw at it. The average ride length of any ride in USF is about 4 minutes.. The studio tour is 25 minutes long!!! If they can somehow haunt the studio tour thats about three or four haunted houses fit into one package right there. They also have 3 sound stages where they do a variety of shows which can be shut down and used for HHN. One show actually describes how they make horror films so its easy to do. Have you ever been to USH? have you seen it? I've been to USF and one thing is very apparent FLAT!!!! it's built in a big circle, you better have a lagoon there because there is nothing else to look at. No terrain and no variety.. The thing that makes USH so unique is its location.. its built on two sides of a hill. That means all the back lot locations cannot be seen from each other.. And yea we make movies here DUH! all the props are basically on the lot which makes it easier for Universal to make-up the actors and make huge houses. The reason USF is repeating haunted houses is because its too expensive to continually make new sets for them. -

NO WAY! can you imagine being on the studio tram at the 'War of the Worlds' wreckage sight and then having one of those Tripods attack the tram!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would pay 60$ just to experience that.. if they can somehow bring moviemagic to life and scare the Shi* out of us I am in. Judging by screamscapes latest post about HHN in hollywood ^ doesnt seem too far fetched. -

First Post! OK, I am extremely excited to hear that HHN is coming back to hollywood. I guess they closed it because it wasn't doing well but they must have wised up and taken a good look at Knotts. I've been to Knotts Scary Farm twice and I must say that it's Excellent! The theming is well done throughout the park and because of its naturally small park size, you get a lot more scares! not to mention the sliders (which I believe knott's invented). I think that hollywood is the best park to have it at and anyone who has been here would know why. The park and lot are literally built on the side of a huge hill. The "World Famous Studio Tour" lends itself to be extremely terrifying. I can't imagine how scary it would be to ride the tram through a dark studio lot with all the things that go bump in the night. With the extensive use of sets, stages and actors I think hollywood could put up a fight with knotts and even orlando. This is just my opinion however.. Anyone up for a flight to LA
