My wife and I are planning a trip to holiday world and whatever else we can fit around our other plans and need some help narrowing things down and advice.

Leaving the D.C. area Friday(July 31st) evening/Saturday(Aug 1st) morning depending on stops/route. We need to be in Des Moines, IA by mid afternoon on Friday Aug 7th

We would really like to hit.

Holiday World

St. Louis City Museum

One day hiking/biking or something active non amusement park likely on the Katy Trail near St. Louis.

Assuming a full day for each of those that leaves us with 2 fully open days.

Places we talked about but not real sure about.

Kentucky Kingdom - If this could be hit on a Sat (Aug 1st) and still get things done we could leave late Friday and get there on Sat at opening)

Worlds Of Fun - Not far out of the way

Schlitterbahn Kansas City - Verruckt (how does this work with 2 people that are not hitting the 400 pound minimum?)

Silver Dollar City - It is a little ways out of the way would it be worth it to go or just hit it some other time?

Adventureland ?

Places I don't need to go to.

Six Flags St. Louis - Went last year and only missed the boomerang coaster and don't feel the need to go back just for that.

Anything I missed that we really should be going to?

How bad would Kentucky Kingdom be on a Saturday in Aug?

Best deals for tickets?

I haven't been to Kentucky Kingdom yet, but personally, I would wait until next year if I were you, so you can get on the new Storm Chaser coaster. I know I am going with the family next year for the first time as part of our family vacation trip!

I also haven't been to Schlitterbahn, Adventureland, or Silver Dollar City, but have been to Holdiay World, Six Flags St. Louis, and Worlds of Fun.

With all of these factors in mind, if I were in your shoes, planning this particular trip out within the date/parameters you've set forth, I would do the following... After hitting up Holiday World, I would then do the two St. Louis activities in back to back days. Then, I would definitely make the trek down to Silver Dollar City (about 4 hours), since I haven't been, and everything I've heard about it says that it's a fabulous park! Then, the following day, I would go to Worlds of Fun (particularly if you've never been - and it's completely on the way up to Des Moines from SDC), as I liked the place back in 2003, even before it had a bunch of the new rides that define it now. Then, you're just under a three hour drive away from your eventual destination.

Assuming this is your first trip to all three of those parks, you're getting some great new coasters under your belt, all within reasonable (4 hour) drives from each other.

Are you coming straight back to D.C. from Des Moines? There are a few places (such as Indiana Beach) that may not be a bad little side trip for you, if you haven't been yet.

If you go to Kentucky Kingdom you will be near Mammoth Cave National Park. It's a wonder of the world, the longest cave on Earth. Lots of hiking trails (might be the largest tract of protected forest in that state) but the best hikes are underground. For summertime you probably should buy tickets in advance on their website. They have several tours to choose from, more than one is recommended. It's closer to Beech Bend than Kentucky Kingdom but other than Kentucky Rumbler, I didn't find Beech Bend that exciting. http://www.nps.gov/maca/index.htm

Looking at my route again I think I'll go to Kennywood (only about 30 miles extra going a different route) on Saturday and skip Kentucky Kingdom for now. I'll have a long drive to get to Holiday World on Sunday but I think it is doable. This will put me going right past Kings Island but I was there last year also so no reason to return right now.

I am busy out near Des Moines until Sunday afternoon and need to be back at work on Tuesday so not a whole lot of extra time on the way back.

^If you haven't been to Kennywood before, that's definitely a winning idea! It's a fabulous "small" park, with one of my favorite coasters (Phantom's Revenge), and a lot of other fun ones! Enjoy yourself!

Just out of curiosity, what did you decide to do in Missouri? Any other parks?
