FirstDropJay
Hi everyone, my girlfriend and I will be on our way to Malaysia in March and while she's absolutely no fan of theme parks (it is quite a talking point, haha!) we want to visit some places of interest. I know there are two major theme parks in the country, Sunway Lagoon and Genting Highlands, but are there smaller places as well that you could recommend? Oh and btw, nice to finally be a member on this site. I'll be working on my English, I promise!
CoasterFEV
What part of Malaysia are you and your girlfriend visiting? It's a BIG country - about the same size as the state of California. Malaysia ranges from the metropolis of Kuala Lumpur, to the classic old town of Malacca, to the endless tropical jungles and palm plantations throughout most of the country, to some of the best scuba diving and snorkling waters in the world. I assume, from your message, that Kuala Lumpur is part of your itinerary. Here are some notes on the parks and other attractions to help you out. Overall: Make sure to know how you will be "getting around" - taxis require negotiation (they have meters....but they are all "broken"), drivers can be arranged in advance and are recommended. Watch your valuables. Don't worry about language - most everyone speaks both Malay and English. Be ready for some hot weather. The country is just (barely) North of the Equator - so there are no "seasons" - it's always hot and humid Summertime. Finally, have patience - there's alot of amazing culture to see, but some things you will not find are up to "Western standards." Sunway Lagoon - Great place with lots to do. The resort advertises that it has 5 (or more) theme parks but, in reality, each of these are more like "lands" to a single park. The park was built in an old tin mine - so the entire park is built inside what looks like an old quarry that the jungle is trying to takeover. The water park is huge and has some great "classic" water slides. The coasters at Sunway are nothing to brag about but each is a fun little ride. If you just want to do the "rides" - this is a half-day park. If you want to hit the waterpark (the waterpark is home to the largest wave pool in the world) - then plan on spending most of a day. Genting Highlands - Don't stay overnight up there. Take a day trip using the cable car to reach the resort. Get there at opening and hit the coasters first. Most all of the rides are "off the shelf" - but the cooler temperatures on top of the mountain are a welcome relief from KL. There is some exploring to do up at Genting - but not much. Endless carnival and video games - food is primarily Western fast food (McD's, BK, Pizza Hut). You should be able to do most of the place in a few hours. The cable car station is about an hour's drive from Central KL. Watch out for wild monkey's on the cable car ride! Times Square - A DEFINITE MUST STOP! Not much to do other than an absolute GREAT Intamin multi-looper built inside a shopping mall! It's right in the heart of KL. The park is rarely crowded - and won't take too long to see - but, if you are going to go anywhere in KL for rides - this is the one place to hit! Tickets to the top of the Petronas Twin Towers in KL are hell to get. Arrange in advance with a local guide - these "companies" have people sit in line each morning around 4am to buy tickets in advance. There is a slight mark-up and who knows the legality of it - but it's the only way to get up to the top Don't forget! Legoland Malaysia just opened directly across the Southern border near Singapore (just down the street from the AMAZING Danga World theme park resort). These are the only other amusement/theme parks in Malaysia. Not sure what your travel schedule is - but if you are going to Malaysia and have a few extra days - a visit to Singapore is a must! You can incorporate Legoland into the trip - their are shuttles that run direct from Singapore to Legoland a couple times a day. TONS of attractions (Universal Studios!), history, architecture, and the cleanest country you've ever visited!
FirstDropJay
Thank you so much for this detailed write up. We're actually going to Langkawi first, then Penang and finally off to KL. I'Ve been to Singapore before, so this time it's just Malaysia. Totally forgot about the Times Square coaster. Looks absolutely stunning in the POVs I've seen. Thanks for the reminder! Was kind of hoping for some hidden gems, but I guess Malaysia isn't the place. Lego Land could actually find it's way to our schedule, although I would have to double check with the girlfriend as it's not around the corner from KL Thanks a lot for now! CoasterFEV
There are plenty of hidden gems in Malaysia - just not for a Theme Park enthusiast Langkawi is amazing. Great beaches, snorkeling, and diving. Beautiful part of the world. I strongly recommend renting a motorboat and driver for the day to explore the islands. Padang is VERY traditional Malaysia. Bring some patience and a get ready to try some good local food! KL can be alot of fun. Suggest staying within walking distance to the Twin Towers as a "base camp" If it's just you and your girlfriend - plan on spending a night at the clubs along Jalan Ramlee near the towers. If not for a great time - then at least to see the number of "working women" who are part of the KL nightlife. Don't forget to take a few hours and climb the steps of the Batu Caves and battle the hundred of evil monkeys that live there! Legoland Malaysia is about a 4 hour drive from KL. It's literally right along the Singapore border in Johor Bahru. Have a great trip!
