What exactly is a "credit"?

I've heard the term, but I'm fairly new to the coaster riding bandwagon, as some might say. I might have gotten some but don't even know it, so could someone please tell me.. What exactly is a coaster "credit"? Do they really mean anything significant, and do they count toward anything major (or even minor)?
