steel Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 PART ONE: Ghetto Fun Fair! So I had to sing at graduation and we were allowed to leave when we were done. My mom couldn't pick me up for another hour, so I was all like "OMGZ! There's a ghetto fair across the street!" So I got out my trusty Visa and splurged on some tickets for my friend and I. I wish I had photos. I really do. Because the tickets they gave us were actually more like credits (a la MOA) and they were on a pass called (I'm cracking up just typing this) the MAGIC PASS. And to top it off, the Magic Pass is rainbow-colored. First ride of the evening was Zipper. You will learn soon enough that everything at this fair is run WAY too fast. I started to get queasy after a few minutes, and not just from the spinning. Part of it was from the positive g's at the bottom of the ride. Next, we rode Fireball, a small frisbee that was also run WAY too fast. I felt like I was in danger of losing my dress shoes (yes, we were still in our performance clothes) several times, but it was super-intense. After that, we rode a high tech little Troika, which was great fun. Then, we walked to the other side of the fair and rode a Ring of Fire without the ceiling (yep, it was considerably painful with OTSRs). and finished off the night with... ZOMGZ! CREDIT!!!!!!! ...a Dragon Wagon at the back of the fair. This credit (#122) was very enjoyable. Not because the ride was interesting. Because my friend got completely freaked out by it. She was honestly screaming her head off like some sort of deranged hamster. It was brilliant. PART TWO: Valleyfair! Next morning, my mom and I drove up to the Twin Cities for Memorial Day. When we reached our destination, I left my mom at the house and went with my cousin to Valleyfair!. First of all, I had to go through guest relations for my Maxx Pass to work. That was a little disappointing. The people at the gate didn't believe that a WoF Maxx Pass could get me in at VF!. Gah. Anyway, we got into the park and walked straight back to Renegade, where we waited for about 30 minutes. And OMG, Renegade is absolutely insane. It is a must ride, IMO. Right now (before having ridden Voyage or El Toro or any of the other greats) it's the best woodie there is, even above Hades. It is certainly the best coaster in the upper midwest. After that, we rode Thunder Canyon, which is okay, but you get a little wet for my taste right at the end. Great views of Renegade, though. Then, we rode High Roller, which is running better this year than last year or the year before that. The trims are still on, but it's a little more minimal now. And of course, we absolutely HAD to ride Flying Trapeze! I'm surprised no one knows about this ride. It is so much fun! It isn't really thrilling, but it's a great family ride with a little twist that gives it a nice, exciting touch. My cousin insisted we ride Wild Thing, so we did, in the back row. It's just as boring as ever. He was very surprised at how dull it was. Then we waited a little while to ride Xtreme Swing. This ride is always worth the wait. Superb ride. Next we rode Steel Venom, which is as good as it usually is. There was a $10/person special at RipCord that we tried to take advantage of, but couldn't when we found out that it was booked for the day. We walked all the way back to Hydroblaster and Flume and rode those. NOT an acceptable amount of wetness! I never completely dried off that day. We had just enough time after that to ride Renegade three more times and to walk back up to Steel Venom one more time before the park closed. I had a great time and I can't wait to get back and ride Renegade again!
ECZenith Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 Nice TR, my friends and I are heading out west on a road trip with Cedar Point and Valleyfair as our main destinations. It'll be my first time seeing Valleyfair, and hearing about Renegade makes me a little more excited every time.
steel Posted May 31, 2007 Author Posted May 31, 2007 Valleyfair! is not what it's cracked up to be. The only coasters worth waiting for are Steel Venom and Renegade. Excalibur and Corkscrew both suck (you may have noticed that we didn't bother riding them), High Roller is fun, but nothing special, and Wild Thing is forceless beyond all imagination. There are some great flats, like Xtreme Swing and Flying Trapeze, and they have some really good water rides if you feel like getting wet (I bashed it, but Flume is one of the best ones I've ridden, and although we didn't ride it, The Wave is tons of fun). So don't go expecting a thrill park. It's the very definition of a family park. Nothing is too huge or too exciting. It's just a lot of fun (and I LOVE the atmosphere).
