Massachusetts has been ranked first in the country by a nationally respected Web site for the quality and breadth of its amusement ride safety regulations. The California-based site, Saferparks, compiled rankings for all 50 states based on their numerical scores in 27 categories ranging from whether the government has the authority to shut down rides with safety problems to whether operators must report major equipment damage. But, recent trends in sex offenders being hired by Carnival owners/operators is REALLY scary!. While traveling carnivals are complying with a new state mandate to check employees’ backgrounds, several loopholes could let sex offenders and others with serious criminal histories slip through, police chiefs and state legislators say. The loopholes include the lack of criminal penalties for employees who provide false information, and the exemption of food and game vendors at carnivals from background checks.
