I've experienced a problem similar to this a couple of times and I found that MOST of the time cleaning the lens (Discwasher makes a cleaner - you put a drop of fluid on one of the two brushes on a special CD) will fix the problem.
On a couple of rare occasions when cleaning the lens didn't work, I had a friend duplicate the disc on his PC using a TDK (or similar high quality disc) DVD, and the duplicated disc then plays fine.
The problem comes down to a dirty lens on DVD. They arent' supposed to get dirty, but they do.
I've never experienced any problems with the DVDs from TPR that a quick lens cleaning didn't fix.
