  1. Kid fell out of a Zipper at the CNE.

Rear-ender at California Screamin'-I think that was 2004, but the ride didn't reopen til 2005.

(Tuesday, August 2, 2005) - At the Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport, Iowa, a 31-year-old mentally disabled man panicked when his seat came to a stop at the top of a 50-foot Ferris wheel. He slid underneath his seat's lap bar in an apparent attempt to either jump from the ride or climb down to the ground. The man's caregiver, who was seated next to him, grabbed his arm and tried to pull him back into the seat, but lost her grip. The man then fell about 15 feet to the ride's hub. One carnival worker, who had climbed to the top of the ride in a rush to rescue the man, was able to slow the man's fall by reaching out and grabbing him. Another worker, who also rushed to climb the wheel, was able to grab the man near the wheel's hub and hold onto him. Workers then manually moved the ride until workers could safely bring the man to the ground. The man suffered only minor injuries.

The workers are employed by Evans United Carnival Shows.

    Wow, I like those carnies

  2. My vote goes to Werner Stengel.

Hey you were asking for "designers"? Weren't you?

In case you take a look at how many coasters by B&M, Intamin, Premier (plus Vekoma, Zierer, Maurer Söhne, Mack, not to forget the older Schwarzkopf/BHS works) have been either designed or finalized by Stengel & his Team within the last decades, you might find out how ridiculous any such poll might work out. Lookie:

    http://rcdb.com/installationresult.htm?column=1,10,3,4,5&order=1,2&contact=30

Recently more and more companies have done complete designs & engineering of their own (B&M and Maurer for instance) which I think is still a kind of "Stengel inheritage", now continued in a worthy way.

Regarding other details as there are restraints, theming, maintainance for instance, do also blame the parks and the authorities. These are the ones to define a lot if not most of the resulting rides, with manufacturers only supplying a certain demand, nothing more.

I won't vote at this "poll". You might understand. Or not. IMHO B&M, Intamin, Premiere, as well as quite a few other coaster companies are simply not comparable in the way of "being the best".

P.S. You could of course say "I like XXX the most" any time. There's nothing better than a variety in preferences, thus coloring the world. This would have been fine, but sadly was *not* the question of this "poll".

4 for me: Mindbender, Jaguar!, Montezooma's Revenge, Xcelerator :o

  3. This Cannon Coaster sounds dangerous. Good thing I was a coaster enthusiast a long time ago, before I was born. I can't believe false rumors about deaths on that roller coaster increased it popularity. Crazy people in the 1900's I tell ya'. Next thing you know, they will be calling 800 foot long British oceanliners unsinkable. Actually, I would ride a roller coaster that jumps gaps. It sounds fun. Anyone else wants to commit suicide by riding a roller coaster that jumps gaps?

it does make a coaster more popular.. years ago a stand up coaster here at Six Flags St. Louis called the Rail Blazer, ejected a rider and that rider got killed, for the short time afterwards when the ride re-opened, it was super popular! everyone had to ride the coaster that killed someone.. its scary how people think..

My wife and I rode the Mindbender at West Edmonton Mall after it had killed someone.

  4. Really! I think that the "war of the worlds" movie kinda exagerated the whole theory. I just think that in the year 2012, or around there, there will be a bunch of ships coming to earth and taking us all to there planet and examining us to see how far we have evolved since the start of the earth.

    ^ I think thats a run-on

Don't you guys realize the world was taken over already, this is all just a simulation of 1999

  5. If you think 90 MPH in rain is painful, try 120 MPH in a downpour!

Got on TTD right as a downpour came in. After my ride, they closed it! It was at night too, so it was really cool. Better than any other in the rain or at night.

when you go on rides like TTD of S:TE, rain drops feel like rocks!

I had a similar experience on the Corkscrew at the PNE. We were loading and a shower was starting. They quickly dispatched out.

Ouch! Brrrrr! Even at 55 mph, the raindrops feel like hail pellets and it takes about 90 seconds to soak through and go from warm to freezing cold.

  6. I have an absolute gem for you. It's the Lusse skooters at Interstate Amusements in Seaside, Oregon. They're all old cars in great condition. It's an old school setup with neon and you can pay per ride and just stay on. The floor is like a mirror. If you're out in the Pacific Northwest and you like bumper cars, do not miss this place.

Here are some places that have what I call the Model T themed Lusses. Dutch Wonderland, Oaks Park (Portland, OR

Having riden only on the Oaks Park (and loved them), we have to check out the Seaside place.

  7. ^no no no...

Its more like Dragster had sex with Storm Runner, NOT MF!!

And LOL @ Boxing Day...isnt that a Canadian thing as well? I think I recall an episode of the Simpsons making fun of it...not sure though. I remember Whacking day and I think boxing day...

Yes, I think it's an old British tradition that the former Empire still follows. We don't make such a big deal about Thanksgiving in Canada, in fact it occurs on Columbus Day, but we DO take two days off for Christmas and Boxing Day!

Besides, Boxing Day sale sounds better than Day after Christmas sale.

  8. Hey there,

This seemed like the best place to ask this sort of question, seeing as everyone is always so friendly....

Me and my girlfriend are returning from Japan on our way back to Eastern Canada but we've planned a stopover in LA so we can check out MM. However, as Japan is quite expensive we are quite broke, so are in need of some advice on the cheapest way to get from the airport to the park, and where we can stay for cheap around there without getting shot (just kidding, sort of). Both of us can drive and we have enough baggage to sink a boat but don't mind making bus drivers load it for us.

And if you are feeling extra generous, some advice on how to tackle the park would be great too, although I don't really expect crowds to be too heavy.

    Thanks for any help eh?

    Cheers,

    Matt

This is the larger "printable" map-should give you some idea of what bus to take in Santa Clarita

  9. I don't understand why they would do all these amusement parks, but not Disney World. :?

    They do have Disneyland, though!

So, Robb/Elissa, where's your house? Maybe it'll show up from the SFMM Bird's Eye View.

It's probably the data they had from TerraServer-you could choose from aerial photo, satellite photo or topo map. Only some places had color aerial photo. They had an ancient picture of SFMM in black and white, the one on Google Earth was much better.

However, the picture of Disneyland is exactly the same as Google's.

In fact, it was taken the last day my family was at Disneyland. Judging by the time of day, we're probably at Pirates or over at DCA watching "It's tough to be a Bug".

As a Linux user, I clicked on your link-it starts to work, then not- why am I NOT surprised?

    UPDATE: Working now - OOPs!

  10. Sounds like the film business is learning-apparently if you go see Chicken Little in 3-D, they let you keep the glasses.

Wait a minute-when do you EVER NEED 3-D glasses except in a theater that lends you a pair?

Souvenir hunters make no sense sometimes.

I'm thinking this could be a reaction to a society that has people everywhere and you have to be very self-controlled. Bodily functions and basic rudeness appear to have been honed to a science. I'm sure the culture will improve with more contact with the outside world.

  11. I have to be honest, I tried FireFox, and I just didn't see what it offered over IE.

Not to offend anyone who uses FireFox, I just didn't get what was so different about it. I'm sure it's great for those who use it, but with IE and browers are concerned I took the "if it ain't broke...." attitude.

Sorry, but IE works just fine for everything I need it to do.

    --Robb

For one thing, Homeland Security advises against using IE:

    Use a different web browser

There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone security model, trust in and access to the local file system (Local Machine Zone), the Dynamic HTML (DHTML) document object model (in particular, proprietary DHTML features), the HTML Help system, MIME type determination, the graphical user interface (GUI), and ActiveX. These technologies are implemented as operating system components that are used by IE and many other programs to provide web browser functionality. These components are integrated into Windows to such an extent that vulnerabilities in IE frequently provide an attacker significant access to the operating system.

It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser, especially when viewing untrusted HTML documents (e.g., web sites, HTML email messages). Such a decision may, however, reduce the functionality of sites that require IE-specific features such as proprietary DHTML, VBScript, and ActiveX. Note that using a different web browser will not remove IE from a Windows system, and other programs may invoke IE, the WebBrowser ActiveX control (WebOC), or the HTML rendering engine (MSHTML)."

  12. Thanks everyone! I really just wanted confirmation that FireFox was in fact working. I've only tested it a couple of times as for the site, my data shows that less than 10% of the visitors use FireFox (although I'm going to assume that the percentage of forum users is higher) but it forces me to use IE as the 'lowest common denominator' that I have to cater to.

Some people were saying that there were problems with FireFox and TPR, but I had a feeling it was more of a browser setting issue, and now a site issue.

    Thanks again for your help!

    --Robb

The way the folks at Mozilla look at it, design the site to be W3 compliant, then any problems with IE are Micro$oft's problems!
