mightypotato Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 On Sunday night, a few friends and I went down to one of the local clubs in Waterloo to see Matt Mays and El Torpedo. For those of you who haven't heard of them, they're an extremely awesome rock band from Nova Scotia. I had seen them once before, and I definitely had to see them again. Just like their show back in October that I missed, they were touring with The Novaks, an indie band out of Newfoundland. Canada's east coast has an awesome music scene. But enough of my rambling, on to the concert! The Novaks come out and start to get the small, but overly enthusiastic crowd excited. It was the first time I had seen The Novaks and I was quite impressed. Their sound is a nice mix of rock, blues and a bit of country. It happened to be the birthday of their lead guitarist/singer, so a handy sign was made by one of my friends, wishing him a happy birthday. He appreciated it and put it on his guitar. After about an hour long set, the band we had all come to see came on. After a brief intermission which allowed us to go to the bar and walk around for a bit, Matt Mays and El Torpedo came on stage. They opened up their set with the awesome song "Building a Boat" that got the crowd (which by this time was larger) nice and excited. They played some of their older songs that were more popular like their recent hit "Cocaine Cowgirl" and my personal favourite "What Are We Gonna Do Come the Month of September?". They also debuted three brand new songs for the very first time at the concert! The songs were absolutely fantastic and I can't wait for their next album to come out. They finished off their set after about an hour and a half and left the stage. Then, after a rowdy encore call from those in attendance, Matt Mays came out by himself for an encore. He did a solo version of "Building a Boat" using an acoustic guitar. It wasn't as good as it was with the entire band behind him, but it was good nonetheless. After he finished playing the song, the rest of the band and The Novaks came on stage and played two last songs for the crowd. The first, was one of my all time favourite songs, "On the Hood" that rocks tremendously. Their second song was one I hadn't heard before called "Move Your Mind". They left the stage, the house lights turned on and people started to file out. But, this is where the fun really begins. So, a few of my friends and I are standing around, having a few drinks after the show as the bar is still open, and the band comes out and starts to have drinks with us! Apparently, my one friend has been to many of their concerts and is now friends with the band. We start talking and laughing with them, and they invite us backstage. Clearly, we're not going to say no, so we head backstage and hang out with both Matt Mays and El Torpedo and The Novaks. The two bands want to have a bit of a party, but things were dying down inside the club, so they decide to head back to their tour bus and party there. And wouldn't you know it, they invited us back to their tour bus! We get in, they say "beers in the back, help yourself" and we party with them until about 3:30AM when everyone either crashes in the bus, or leaves. Needless to say, its one of those experiences I will never forget. I got a taste of the rock star life that night...lol. Anyways, here are a couple videos I shot using my crappy digital camera and some pictures that are...alright. I didn't get any tour bus or backstage photos because well...that just wouldn't have been cool to do. http://media.putfile.com/Novaks --> The Novaks http://media.putfile.com/Cocaine-Cowgirl --> MM&ET playing "Cocaine Cowgirl" The Novaks, getting the crowd excited Happy Birthday, Mick! (He's not really 17) Hurray for Matt Mays and El Torpedo! Rocking out. Seriously though, that pole ruined so many pictures. One last picture of Matt Mays
