What exactly is backseat mod-ing?

Hey, so I'm not new, but I don't exactly know what backseat mod-ing really is. I commented on a topic where someone else was trying to get it locked, and I welcomed the guy who started it because he was new and showed him the page to introduce himself. Is this considered mod-ing?

Sorry, I know this is kind of stupid reading it over now, but I'd like to know exactly what you can get in trouble for so I won't do it unintentionally. Thanks.

Backseat moderating is when you assume the role of a moderator and remind other people on the forum of the rules or try to speak as though you are an authority or staff of the forum to other members.

"You really need to watch your spelling and grammar or your thread will be locked" is back seat moderating.

"Your attitude is really condescending and not welcome on this forum" is backseat moderating.

"Remember to upload your images instead of linking them" is backseat moderating.

"Uh, oh - your thread is going to get locked because of that onride photo" is backseat moderating.

"This contest is by far the worst I've ever seen. Sorry, this is pointless" is backseat moderating.

These are all issues that our members not need to concern themselves with and that is why we have moderators.

Hope the helps explain things.
