TPR 2017 Coaster Poll Results!

Recommended Posts

I asked before but I think it got lost in the flood, do fewer voters tend to skewer the results too much in 1 direction, is that why they aren't included?

Just out of curiosity If I was the only person to ride Draken at Gyeongju World and, hypothetically I'm the kind of enthusiast who now feels superior that I have this exclusive credit that nobody else does (because we know they exist) and rank it top would it get bumped to the top of the polls?

Ironically enough with my question though, as one of the less than twelve who rated T Express, the only two coasters I put higher than it both still ended up lower on the polls (Kawasemi and Maverick).

Yes, that's what happens. And if we try to apply more/less weight based on ridership it becomes heavily US or heavily non-US biased, depending on the direction.

I would personally love to see how certain coasters did by type. For instance how did the B&M inverts rank, hypers, floorless, the Intamin hypers, top launch coasters, etc since we have threads for those things on here, it would be neat to see how they did after a real poll.

I was bored today. I used the rankings from the combined results, and only included coasters that had enough riders to be included in the poll. If I screwed something up/missed something, holla!

I thought I had a decent assortment of coasters under my belt, but this poll proves to me I need to ride more. Now I just need to convince the hubs that I need a month and about $10k out of our vacation account to make it happen.

Thanks for separating it out!

I personally thought Talon was one of the better inverts and thought others shared the same thoughts. Guess I was wrong from the breakdown.

I'm also shocked to see La Ronde's Goliath at the bottom of the B&M hyper list. I thought it was one of the stronger ones.

I made a couple edits and fleshed out the GCI and CCI rankings to include most if not all of them.

^ There's a lot of interesting things going on here. For one - how Dominator got ranked so low on the floorless/sitdowns. Criminal.

Also how the Batmans are ranked closely, and how Great Bear is so tragically low (and frankly, Alpengeist too).

I wasn't too surprised by Talon, though I personally think its one of the better ones. Not surprised by Hydra either.

Thanks for taking the time to break it down like this.

Talon was closed on the one and only day I visited Dorney back in 2016, so I cannot speak for that ride, however I really enjoyed Great Bear. I think it's a REALLY solid mid-tier B&M Invert, and if it had a stronger second half, I would put it near the top. The first drop, loop, immelmann, zero-G, and high speed turn flow so well and are perfectly designed.

I also agree that Dominator sits a little too low on that list, but the only one above it that I've ridden is Bizarro so who am I to say anything. Plus combining it with the sit-downs probably pushed it down further since it got put up with rides like Kumba and Dragon Khan.

I thought the same on Dominator but then I saw the coasters ahead of it. Bizarro is the only one I may put Dominator above. Says a lot about B&M's quality.

Uhhhh when I said "missed something" I didn't mean "what categories would you like to see", haha. That took me hours, though I will admit I was assisted by iced coffee and rum, hence why I was worried about screwing something up!

I thought about doing Vekoma but what am I doing? Ranking the boomerangs and SLC's? That seems tedious and mostly pointless, though I did think about it.

edit: just added Premier launchers, Arrow suspended and B&M wing & flyers.

I'm legally required to be unbiased because I do all the entries for the coasters but a surprise for me was how low White Lightning placed.

I actually disagree with Dominator, I found it pretty meh. Its so big and fast and the longest floorless coaster, but imo is very short. You do the loop, turns, Cobra Roll (which is a pretty cool layout) but then right into the MCBR. Always found it pretty meh. Shame because that first part is cool, if it did more elements would be great.

I agree about the inverts. Great Beat is a superb ride, and Talon is deff one of the better inverts.

I always found Hydra fun, but I know its an enthusiast meme...you pretty much have to hate on it. Few have ever told me why, they just lol at it, say its weird or "the roll ruins the whole ride" all of which is silly to me

^ Hydra isn't my least favorite floorless. It's not forceful, but I do love the straight drop, zero-G roll, and jojo roll.

I'll take it over Bizarro, Batman, or Scream, but wasn't shocked it placed at the bottom of the floorless coasters.

I personally think Dominator is fantastic. I love all of it, its only missing a zero-G but what it does have (that yank off the drop, the speed in the first half, the hang time in the first loop, the airtime off the MCBR, etc) more than makes up for it. But I was more surprised it placed low due to the almost universal praise it gets around here, but maybe I just imagined that.

As far as Hydra, I just find it dull. It looks great, it *should* be good based on the the elements, but after a dozen rides I still find it a snooze. The jo-jo roll is just awkward, but I guess its a fun novelty?

Cool list. Sounds like something I would do if I was bored too. The only things I see missing are Flight Deck from the B&M invert list and CGA's Patriot from the B&M floorless list. I'm also am surprised to see Great Bear ranked so low on the B&M invert list - I quite liked it.

^ Thank you, I fixed those! Patriot is looooooooooooow.

I knew I missed a few things, that's why I said to let me know if you guys noticed anything. I'm still blaming it on the rum!

If anyone is still pulling data from the lists it might be interesting to see which parks have the most coasters ranked in the top 50 or top 100-150 or something. Expedition Everest is 100 on the list and around 150 are some Batman the Ride clones, not sure where the "cutoff" should be but I think it's safe to say that everything under that is a coaster most people generally consider to be way above average so a list of parks with the most coasters in the Top Whatever could be interesting.

I guess kind of in the same thread it looks like Cedar Point has the best 1/2 coaster combo in Maverick/Millennium Force at 6/11 but I'd be curious what other parks had the lowest combined ranking of their top 2 coasters.

The parks with the most coasters in the top 50:

3 - Busch Gardens Tampa, Cedar Point

2 - Hersheypark, Kentucky Kingdom, Liseberg, Mirabilandia, Six Flags Great Adventure, Walibi Holland

The parks with the most coasters in the top 100:

5 - Cedar Point

4 - Busch Gardens Tampa, Six Flags Magic Mountain

3 - Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Kings Island, Liseberg, Phantasialand, Six Flags Great Adventure, Six Flags Over Texas, Universal Studios Japan

2 - Canada's Wonderland, Carowinds, Europa Park, Hansa Park, Hersheypark, Holiday World, Kentucky Kingdom, Kings Dominion, Lagoon, Mirabilandia, PortAventura Park, SeaWorld Orlando, Silver Dollar City, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Walibi Holland

Keep in mind that some parks just have a lot of coasters. If you calculated the percentage of top 50 / 100 coasters divided by the total rankable coasters per park, things might look different. I'm not calculating all those percentages because are you nuts?!?
