Great reports thus far. Don't know how I missed this thread before today. I agree with you about SFNE; it's definitely underrated on this board, and easily one of the nicer parks in the chain.

Well. I'm going to be completely honest and say that for this next trip, I f*cked up. See, my home airport is MCO Orlando, and they're kind of awesome all the time. Christmas Eve? Monday morning? Freak thunderstorm with tornado watch? MCO always seems to get you out pretty much on time and I've long taken for granted the fact that you can show up 20 minutes prior to boarding and still have time to get to Starbucks once past security and over to the other side.

Or so I thought. It just so happened that there was some kind of problem with all of the body scanners and TSA requiring all passengers to metal detector it on this morning. I arrived around 6 AM for my 7 AM departure/630 AM boarding. Needless to say, I missed my flight.

Surely, they could get me to San Francisco on the next flight in about 40 minutes, right? Oh no, I was going to deal with the consequences on this one. The next flight that could get me to San Francisco would be at 5:55 PM that evening, involve traveling for about 10 hours and land me in San Francisco just after midnight, by way of both Albuquerque and Denver. All other flights I could hastily Google were sold out or cost like $700 and get me there too late anyway. So, I Ubered back home, went back to bed until the afternoon, then did it all over again.

The primary purpose of this trip was to attend San Francisco Pride with some Orlando friends who were coming a day later than me. My goal was to hit California's Great America on Thursday as they were closed on Friday, spend half a day at Six Flags on Friday, then start the weekend. Had I really learned my lesson from all the detentions I got in school for my tardiness, this post would be all sorts of gooey text about how hard I came when I rode Railblazer. With the weekend booked full of plans and only one park day happening, my one park for the trip would, of course, be

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

I'm going to say some things that some people might yell at me for, possibly even activate the apparent Norcal hair-trigger touchery. This park doesn't really do it for me. I'd probably rather go to LaRonde or Six Flags America. I really hoped that this day could change my mind but it just didn't. Two of their major attractions (Joker and V2) weren't open when we got there around 11:30 AM. V2 didn't even have a train in the station so there was no hope for that. Their JB's is a fake-out. Security wouldn't let me in with an unopened and sealed herbal tea from the gas station, which even Six Flags over Texas let me through with. I had a locker that failed to open and had to wait 45 minutes for 3 employees to figure out how to radio the right person with a key. The only coaster that loaded quickly was Superman and they were total dicks about it. All other parks have given discounts of like 15-20% or a flat dollar amount like $20 off at SFNE with the Gold Membership on one-day tickets for friends tagging along and this one didn't do any. Just...come on dude.

Anyways, I promise I'll say nicer things from here on out, but this was my first visit to the park in 10 years. If I go back in 10 years, it'll be too soon.

001.thumb.JPG.36538bea871b278dcafd8c3ecbe868fd.JPG

I'm going to say something nice. If you walk instead of taking the tram, SFDK really makes sure you get your steps in before you eat hamburgers and chicken fingers at Fake JB's.

002.thumb.JPG.82f10818d7417d81b5d64ecadeced3c9.JPG

Many, many enduring hours of cardio later, Medusa appears! My friend literally said "oh look they painted it!", and my response was, "nope, actually it looks that way because they didn't!"

003.thumb.JPG.e95c33cad4d4060c38c13046213e90c2.JPG

This was the part where I remembered it being funky and started to get excited about "weird V2", only to be let down by the fact that it was closed. In fact, there was not even a train in sight and the entrance path area was blocked off.

Mr. Giraffe says, "Hey you lot! Come to see the Dragons, have yeh?"

Oh nvm wrong quote

005.thumb.JPG.60f64a27ca263d03de644f67fa423542.JPG

HAHAHAHA LOL! You stupid b*tches thought Six Flags cared about their #1 attraction opening within an hour of the park?! HAHAHAHA LOL go back to Florida

006.thumb.JPG.f47e33965e3e2e30f60d285cae9f6086.JPG

Luckily, we kind of meandered around the area for a bit and watched them finally do a test run, until they started letting riders into the queue at approximately 12:15 PM

007.thumb.JPG.8175d58f732314f1a2f8a9fcb0f36a18.JPG

I have two opinions about this ride. The first, which I'm sure numerous people have been torn new *ssholes over in the SFDK thread if there even is one, is why did they turn a perfectly smooth GCI woodie into an RMC? Did you see Dollywood do this? No, they kept the GCI and just built another coaster.

Anyway, any RMC is still an RMC. The first drop really gives a whip-crack to the right which is alarming, and theres the usual awkward twisty bits followed by some good moments of airtime. I'd probably say this is the slowest and least-eventful RMC overall, but that being said, it's still better than 90% of coasters out there.

008.thumb.JPG.3266f3045d97525be9155cd1eed4db54.JPG

Next we headed over to Superman Ultimate Flight. Would you know, it's not a B&M Flyer?

These rides pack a hell of a punch and this one is of the lapbar-only variety. Great launches, good hangtime, and lots of Premier winning!

009.thumb.JPG.7440a09a5e8962ce180b439ee0688f5c.JPG

Here's a picture of the same coaster in the middle of doing it's whole hangtime greatness.

010.thumb.JPG.e029a880014eef4888fe896a49f36b63.JPG

You know how when you go on the Terminator ride at Universal and they speed up the loading process by pretending you're army recruits and being like "move out team!"?!

It's kind of like that here, except they're total dicks to guests about it and they literally say over and over on the loudspeaker that if you don't move fast enough, you don't get on. I think this photo was actually a capture of a ride op telling a girl tough sh*t. Do people need to hurry up for operations at all parks? Yes. But is there really a reason to treat your guests that way? Absolutely not.

011.thumb.JPG.2dd7839ee9721b5ae547eb0cf6853b7c.JPG

Whoops I meant to post this in the SFNE thread. BUT LOOK HOW CLOSE IT GETS THO!

012.thumb.JPG.6e6db7f6acdaadc391da048a9ce13fa2.JPG

We decided to change the pace a little at this point. Looking on the app, I saw that there was a JB's in the park, then on the way I was hyping the sh*t out of it to my friend, saying how I have dreams about the $9 pulled pork fries, how you can sit in the AC, take a draft beer, etc

013.thumb.JPG.9e1fb1c358301044a04636da6607eb05.JPG

Oh, f*ck you Discovery Kingdom. You catfished me into thinking I was about to go to JB's Smokehouse BBQ and not JB's same-hamburger-stall-as-the-rest.

014.thumb.JPG.bc8422c2bff248a32fd2d28d3e14d1ba.JPG

One of the coolest attractions in this park actually lies within here. Six Flags' attempt to make a Universal-style ride like Despicable Me resulted in a random seat that raises you up and shakes the fake JB's out of you in no particular direction to the movie, which was made on the budget of the Pirhana movies. Needless to say, it was awesome.

015.thumb.JPG.f87b5120c0fc65a0ed74d4f05a2b3835.JPG

Here's a super blurry photo of the inside of the theatre room. You're held in by a seatbelt, and weighing only about 150 pounds, I started sinking during the ride like one of those fat-kid-on-slingshot videos. I was laughing my a$$ off the entire time.

016.thumb.JPG.ab6169c2c4a27272e80edddebb2be31c.JPG

On the back path next to the pretty lake, Discovery Kingdom has a series of "signs and logos of Six Flags parks better than this one" banners. Oh, how I wished there was a portal to Great Escape here.

017.thumb.JPG.8ed5aa849206000a8634fed405cd204c.JPG

It was at this point that we decided to head over toward Medusa. I don't think this floorless gets the credit it deserves. It starts out exactly the same as Kraken, but then does the "Sea Serpent Roll" or whatever instead of Kraken's cobra, then the second half is completely different, but honestly way better. You get a hell of an intense jolt out of the brake run, followed by a series of dizzying all-left turns. This is definitely a star for this park.

18.thumb.JPG.c05afc3d79cd97cbd29a01ceadb5d843.JPG

They even gave it a pretty station that is very reminiscent of Goliath at SFMM.

019.thumb.JPG.be28a8dd29d5a96955e5600a8eb5f0b7.JPG

Girl, bye! Ain't nobpdy riding the roughest SLC in the states unless they desperately need the credit or something.

Also, girl, bye. This is the last photo that I took before we decided to dip and head back into San Francisco a little early to start the weekend of sightseeing and Pride. I'll probably post some of those photos many, many moons from now. Maybe I'll even make another trip to SFDK by then ;)

Prob not tho.

I agree Discovery Kingdom isn't one of the chain's stronger parks but it's still a decent park.

I'm glad the ops on Superman still haul. I was worried a 12 passenger train at a major park would result in a 1-2 hour wait but it never exceeded 30 minutes on the 2 Saturdays I visited back in 2014. SFNE's Superman does a similar thing saying they'll close the gate in X seconds but it's the kick in the pants people need to speed up.

For the next part of my report, I’m going to let the photos do most of the talking. This part of our trip was devoted to some sightseeing and San Francisco Pride with some of my Orlando friends.

San Francisco is an absolutely gorgeous city and we had an amazing time being tourists.

We’d start off our weekend with a brunch at Kitchen Story in the Castro. Unfortunately I failed to take a food pic, but their food and drinks were outstanding!

This is what San Francisco looks like. Stunning scenery and hills everywhere you look.

Can I get an “Amen” up in here?

Someone told me that San Francisco people get their feathers ruffled when you call it a trolley...or a tram. I couldn’t remember which one they said it was, so I stuck to calling it both.

We soon went to Dolores Park, where I took photos of myself against a tree whilst contemplating why we’d gotten up so early

Speaking of Dolores Park...the views from there are staggering. And it seems everybody had the same idea of hanging out there that morning

We then did a bit of walking to go and find Lombard Street. Going uphill in that direction, we found this street with a grade that photos just can’t do justice. I do cardio, stair climber, squats at the gym all the time and I can say that these hills were absolutely killer.

A bit of walking and we’d find ourselves in the midst of the main events, beginning with the pride parade down Market Street

The parade area was absolutely slammed with people. We found a place to sit above the exit to the BART station here, the stairway of which was absolute chaos.

Immediately following the parade, there was a celebration area sectioned off near the Civic Center, where there’d be food, a rally, performances on multiple stages, and all kinds of ways to get your gay on!

I didn’t take a whole lot of photos once the drinking commenced at the celebration, but it was an incredible time! Then, we’d spend the evening clubbing it in the Castro, which has awesome character and color day and night

And I leave you with one final night shot from the Castro. Thanks for reading! We had a blast in San Francisco and at Pride!

Next up, a return to normalcy with the next theme park trip.

And the awesome updates continue. I have only been to the west coast once and that was to live in San Francisco w/ my aunt for two weeks when I was 16, and I loved the city and I've always wanted to go back. So beautiful there and it will always stick with me (especially coming from Philly) how nice everyone there is. Love all the photos and your captions. Keep em coming.

That JB's is not ok. I don't care if they have 10 coasters named Goliath that are all very different from each other, but you just don't do that to the chain's star attraction.

We also walked over to JB's at Discovery Kingdom full of hope and left supremely disappointed. What a giant turd.

Great photos from San Francisco. Your report might be a LITTLE light on Sea Lions, but I'll give you a pass just this once.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys, I really appreciate it! ^^The path to the "upskirt shot" that lets you go completely under the bridge roadway is kind of in an obscure corner of the northern point lookout parking lot. It looks like it's just a bunch of bushes, but if you keep walking down it brings you to the path.

The next trip got off to a quite rocky start, too. For some reason that seemed to be the theme of the month of June for me. See, the plan was to start in Athens, Georgia and spend half a day between driving up and going to Lake Winnie, so I could finally get my elusive Cannon Ball credit. We would then drive to Pigeon Forge and spend the last two hours or so checking out the Smokey Mountain Alpine Coaster. Great plan!

As it would turn out, some thunderstorms were rolling through the southeast that day. Lake Winnie decided to close for the day at around 1PM and we were very grateful for the fact that they posted it on social media quickly so we could make contingency plans. Being not far from our starting point in Athens, we said “F it!”, let’s take a little side trip to,

Six Flags over Georgia

Oh wait. Actually, we wouldn’t end up doing that either for the same reasons. Well we literally went there, but the weather changed against the hourly forecast models, going from 3 hours of "cloudy" to 3 hours of "hell storms" and we killed a little time before checking the radar a few times and calling it. At least my friends would get their memberships processed, then we’d get an early start to Pigeon Forge to check out the aforementioned Smokey Mountain Alpine Coaster!

Only, we wouldn’t get to do that either. We arrived to find them sending people away due to having technical difficulties for a few hours on end, rendering them closed the rest of the evening. So we were 0 for 3. But hey, at least I got a few photos!

I miss the signs that said “We’re glad Georgia’s on your mind”. I know this is a photo of my friend’s GPS, but, yeah.

Walking into Six Flags over Georgia is an orgy of B&M track. No trains on the track was an ominous sign of what was to come.

Heading to Membership processing gave some nice views of the hot new Twisted...Cyclone. I literally have to think every time to remember the name. But would we get to ride it...? Find out below!

We didn’t.

In true Six Flags fashion, there were windows with blinds that were closed, plus windows without blinds that...were also closed. Is anybody here? Hello? HELLO?!?

Then all of the sudden Acrophobia was running, so we excitedly went in.

We booked it to Wicked Colossus or whatever they call it, just to find this employee with his back turned to the entrance he was supposed to be blocking. Not telling people not to get lockers for the ride that was closed. Not communicating at all until other guests started squeezing through the side of the barricade, for him to finally say the ride is closed. *sigh* I swear, Six Flags Parks this season...

We said “see you in a couple of weeks” to Scorcher and Goliath as we headed back to the car, the rain washing the tears down our faces along with our wasted hair product from that morning...

Up next, the particularly good day that would follow!

beautiful pics of San Francisco. . . looks like you had a lovely time there!

can't comment really on SFoG, haven't been there (yet), but the operations at SFFT have been stellar this season.

hopefully things improved on your June trips!

Exactly, I completely forgot to mention this is my assessment of SFDK.

Time for the next part of our journey! I heard about the next spot we went to thanks to TPR. Despite traveling quite a bit, my plans usually consist of theme parks and the nightlife, and it dawned on me that in my 28 years, I still had never done an alpine coaster. Wanting to change this and having struck out on Smokey Mountain Alpine Coaster the night prior, we decided to go early the next morning, to

Goats on the Roof

Again, thanks to TPR for having reported on this place previously. It's essentially a roadside attraction with a large gift shop, some goats (on the roof), and an alpine coaster. We didn't spend much time in the gift shop, as we had the goal of getting to Dollywood as soon as possible, but I can tell you that the coaster was totally awesome and I did NOT expect how far up the mountain the lift takes you, as you cannot see the entire lift from the parking lot. They have a pretty modern system that auto-slows the ride vehicles if you don't brake, so that's exactly what I did. I kept the bar full-down my entire ride and got some decent speed and laterals. The guy in the station said "we're the fastest alpine coaster in the area", and I took his word for it.

IMG_1986.thumb.jpg.4e48b4490c9c81bdbf7d01c9d70c0bd9.jpg

On approach, you can see the end portion of the ride's track

IMG_1987.thumb.jpg.e724b5617ebad8aad69f5be1767d1edb.jpg

You also get a view of the end of the ride from the parking lot.

IMG_1989.thumb.jpg.f5361928e57e4a24ed280b159adf91bb.jpg

From outside the gift shop, you can see that they sell everything from rugs to adirondack chairs to bird houses. We didn't do too much exploring of the gift shop, as we wanted to get to Dollywood

IMG_1990.thumb.jpg.1e580b40491a4abef5bacc58fbff5d89.jpg

Our first look at the ride vehicles for the alpine coaster. Looks pretty modern!

IMG_1991.thumb.jpg.024e013074527f5414103d6709b009bf.jpg

Heading out of the station and beginning what would be quite a long lift hill!

IMG_1993.thumb.jpg.d54991136496b5d2ad04f2c7138e1fa2.jpg

Still climbing...

IMG_1997.thumb.jpg.2df4e4757acebe0e4d5e39f7bd57b58f.jpg

More of the layout comes into view and there are riders zooming by as you go up the mountain

IMG_2004.thumb.jpg.ad356ced53e3be5fd25facf79fb4d489.jpg

Approaching the top, time to put my phone away so I can haul a$$ down the mountain

IMG_2006.thumb.jpg.3a98b6a6dc557c988ed4deba36704fe6.jpg

Proof that there are, indeed, Goats on the Roof.

IMG_2008.thumb.jpg.64bc1f3734419eec770ffd17aec8fc2d.jpg

As we headed toward Dollywood, we were treated to some stunning views of the surrounding Smokey Mountains, which really is a beautiful area of the country that I'd highly recommend visiting!

IMG_2010.thumb.jpg.681d16ce74565b56c8ad90d9fbf51735.jpg

Of course we're in Tennessee, so Moonshine is a thing. Next up, Dollywood!

Okay, so straight from Goats on the Roof we went to

Dollywood

I think I've done like two reports from Dollywood in the past two years, so this one is going to be mostly photos.

We got very lucky this time. I know Lightning Rod is having difficulties again and we were there only a day or two before these difficulties started. It's getting a little embarrassing, though, and I really hope they can figure out a long-term solution to getting this reliably up and running soon. Can you believe this is it's third season?

This day was one of the best I've ever had at Dollywood and any day at Dollywood is an excellent theme park day. Pretty busy day at the park but with top-notch operations as well as having Time Saver Pass, we got to do everything we wanted to do many times. And the best part is that we got in 10 rides on Lightning Rod despite a few spots of downtime in the morning and afternoon. I can finally say, without sounding too much like a rank queen, that it's probably the best RMC and about tied with El Toro and EGF for my "favorite coasters". Especially at night in the back, it was absolutely f*cking terrifying between it hauling ass like crazy and being in pitch blackness on the far side of the mountain. With it running like that, when you're coming over those airtime hills you have no idea whether or not it's just flown off the track. Totally outstanding ride that I hope gets to see more uptime very soon.

Great food, friendly employees, amazing rides. Now pics or it didn't happen

IMG_2013.thumb.jpg.6cf2bb9e82b3fe9bc5620a9ebd3dc921.jpg

Hey again, Dollywood. I think I've visited you more in the past year and a half than Universal Orlando, and I live 5 minutes away.

IMG_2016.thumb.jpg.47660365036d54e7c639d26c3d78c0d3.jpg

It doesn't get much more southern than Christian-inspired songs being sung by a group featuring both a double bass and a banjo, in front of an American flag.

IMG_2017.thumb.jpg.cae9e850e55e5ac4db42c3e00588b27e.jpg

We booked it to Lightning Rod and...closed. Again, I really hope a long-term uptime solution can be found soon so trips to Dollywood can be a matter of "when you ride LR" and not "if you ride LR"

IMG_2026.thumb.jpg.19b8b4d3a04387c733ec4bfb57abdc49.jpg

So instead we got our morning workout power-walking it up Craftsmen's Valley to the totally outstanding Tennessee Tornado. Love love love this coaster, especially in the back row with the way that drop rips you down it!

IMG_2030.thumb.jpg.33f81121e3dfe4453463a7686cb55d6e.jpg

Yayyy Wild Eagle. I'm finding that as they age a little bit, B&M Wing Coasters get super shaky on a vertical axis and some give me that "brain stem headache". I've experienced this on Flug der Demonen and Gatekeeper last year, but I'm happy to say that Wild Eagle is still super smooth!

IMG_2033.thumb.jpg.d6a34e2e65a2bb01969bf3d47f0357d2.jpg

A cool overview shot of Firechaser Express from Wild Eagle's exit. Such beautiful scenery here too

IMG_2034.thumb.jpg.20305068a94ea552909060c4e5d4a488.jpg

Me in a nutshell. Heh

IMG_2036.thumb.jpg.ee7cb0f3ff69d72b6e692f0519f1ed4d.jpg

Cool theming, fire, backwards section. This is what you get when you Dollywood a family coaster

IMG_2039.thumb.jpg.66de97913c20c69d158949aee07474d6.jpg

They took out the Splash Battle and put in some rocking chairs

IMG_2041.thumb.jpg.6b3d49313f296a7b235d4a4bd70f6d87.jpg

This is one of the most disorienting sections of any coaster out there for me. From the time you go into the drop to the time you hit the brakes it's one big "WTF just happened to me?!"

IMG_2046.thumb.jpg.868c7d8acdbc8b8c7d895e06911c6b73.jpg

It wouldn't be my TR without me telling you motherf*ckers that hate on Thunderhead that it isn't rough!

IMG_2048.thumb.jpg.4c57e09aec2708c0b588b8b4d9d8f9ac.jpg

Well, this is a bit of a problem.

IMG_2049.thumb.jpg.3c5fb664a886021478da80f0ca145a91.jpg

It also wouldn't be the South without selling you bags to conceal your gun that you must carry around with you at ALL times. It's almost like they're compensating for something ;)

IMG_2052.thumb.jpg.2306bdcb21d1b56cc32ee190d074131a.jpg

You had me at "shackles"...

IMG_2059.thumb.jpg.e19ef0e6ff54bdf8df6f0e1760d568e2.jpg

Despite only a one-train operation, they were doing an outstanding job of line control and getting the train out as quickly as possible

IMG_2066.thumb.jpg.3aa1c19f9ca068752284f0ec94cb04f2.jpg

Weeee flying through a barn on a swing

IMG_2068.thumb.jpg.c83ea6d2c88f9bc7080068f0d1fc6254.jpg

My friends convinced me to do this and it's actually a really awesome flume ride. It also helps with the fact that it's hot as hell in the south in the summer.

IMG_2072.thumb.jpg.1aaf3d11e4c69914146547fc4d4eff56.jpg

This ride's wetness level is hit or miss. Some people got lucky and only got a few spots on them. Some people came off absolutely soaked. We got absolutely f*cking inundated with water but it was so needed. My hair got messed up tho :/

IMG_2081.thumb.jpg.34ff26bda8dff502284d84c895a2a8f4.jpg

Cool that Dollywood teaches you how to be an Appalachian logger while you're in line for Drop Line, and how they fit the theme into the region.

IMG_2082.thumb.jpg.8ac62bdd2f32fb6ac44de7af419cfefb.jpg

Drop Line is actually pretty big! I forgot what it said, but somewhere in the neighborhood of 200-250 feet.

IMG_2084.thumb.jpg.f6784ed264985fe2863358eb74d05ba3.jpg

I splurged and got this awesome Oreo orgasm thing and since it was at Dollywood, it changed my life and now you should go get one too.

IMG_2085.thumb.jpg.ce32fda1070f0573f14560dc26531e81.jpg

Little did we know that as the sun began to set, Lightning Rod was preparing to make us it's b*tch back in those woods that night.

IMG_2086.thumb.jpg.d79e00c4b5b5687c224fa9f1e9f2f665.jpg

Of course we got the cinnamon bread. But I put the photo on Snapchat and failed to take an actual pic

IMG_2093.thumb.jpg.68a10dcd1fd3fa79dc245b679f05efb5.jpg

So, Dollywood gets very close and even reaches "Disney Magic" levels a lot of times. Lucky riders who were on Drop Line at the right moment were treated to the ride being parked at the top for the fireworks show. You go, Dollywood.

IMG_2094.thumb.jpg.33ab06208a4ba61a7ad58f992e3325da.jpg

However, we had other plans. This was Lightning Rod's queue during the fireworks. We got 5 or 6 rides in a row before the park closed, and as I said before, it was totally balls-to-the-wall insane. "Warmed up" rides on Lightning Rod are some scary sh*t! I got Skyrush-like bruises on my thighs from our night rides and Lightning Rod can manhandle me any day of the week, it hurt so good!

IMG_2095.thumb.jpg.2652af3c210072b8812e543b25cdc855.jpg

Then, we luckily had one bonus hour of Goats on the Roof being open, and since everything in this area is required by law to be totally and completely awesome, they have a $5 same-day re-ride policy, so we went back for a night ride!

IMG_2096.thumb.jpg.ee79d5d5631b34a371bfa9013b036c96.jpg

Just your little headlight, the track lighting, and the woods.

IMG_2098.thumb.jpg.8cafd5656893a24da173abe7580e71d6.jpg

To end the night, we headed over to Smokey Mountain Alpine Coaster since it looks f*cking awesome at night and we failed to ride it the night prior.

IMG_2099.thumb.jpg.757bc0c58f7a39e86d9240c1166aabd4.jpg

However, it wouldn't be. The lady at the window said we were looking at about a 2-hour wait with this queue house full and it didn't seem to be moving much. We had our hotel booked already by Carowinds, so we decided to call it.

A little bit of a bummer, but honestly, I'll almost always come back to this area every year if I have the opportunity to do so. Dollywood is awesome, the local attractions are awesome, we found a cool brewery, and it's just generally a great place to visit.

In case you didn't get enough pictures from the recent TPR trip, the final park on this mini trip for us was,

Carowinds

I love me some Carowinds. However, I think I learned my lesson about going during the summer. I wasn't born to be a southern belle, and my-oh-my, that dog gone sun had me roastin' like a hot potater! There isn't much shade to be had at Carowinds, and it was about 100 degrees and felt like 100% humidity. I may live in Florida, but it is significantly hotter up in that area than it is down here.

Luckily, they have a 95mph coaster to dry your pits out on. Fury 325 is an amazing ride and when I first rode it a few years ago, it was like an electric shock to revive the B&M we once knew and gave us rides like Kumba, Raptor, and Batman clones. I'm going to be honest and say that it felt a *little* more lethargic than I remember it from a few years ago, but I'm almost positive that it had something to do with just coming off all those night rides on Lightning Rod. That or the heat.

I first visited Carowinds when Intimidator was new. Back then, the park was "okay", but to me it felt like one of those parks you hit every 5 or 10 years and don't think too much about in between. In the past few years, Carowinds and Cedar Fair have had the pedal to the metal. Carowinds did their new entrance plaza, installed Fury, did their new waterpark area, re-themed old areas, and really just breathed new life into sections of the park that used to be ho-hum. Back in the day I'd make comparisons between Cedar Fair and Six Flags. Nowadays it's like Cedar Fair went off to the ivy league while Six Flags is stuck in summer school.

IMG_2103.thumb.jpg.096b4b32798750fedfd075a735390ea0.jpg

Approaching the park and I get a money shot of both Fury and Intimidator trains. Ahhhhhhh...I'm close!

IMG_2108.thumb.jpg.e7d6696be61c3f135947680c9dc6eeb7.jpg

And boom goes the dynamite. Just look at this f*cking drop. How is this even a thing?

IMG_2111.thumb.jpg.aa360c3c463b8538517cd1905a16fe05.jpg

Fury zooming all over and around the entrance area really ups the ante and makes for a great start to your visit! The fact that they keep the grass underneath and around it so tidy just shows that Cedar Fair really cares about the initial presentation of their park.

IMG_2112.thumb.jpg.16e293992613ba53577416eba2de570a.jpg

This thing hauls a$$ to the point where you even have to be quick to snap the photo before the train is gone

IMG_2113.thumb.jpg.910dfd7b3b72226d8a673e09389bbfb3.jpg

The "treble clef" is the best part of the ride for me

IMG_2117.thumb.jpg.10cfbeb0a37cf7968fbd9cca3c0704ce.jpg

Wait...you're not Twisted Timbers...

IMG_2118.thumb.jpg.1746c617239a597b5f88670751c5ebfe.jpg

You've all seen this photo about 1,000 times but this thing is HUGE

IMG_2127.thumb.jpg.fbb5e5c6a5aad35d9d698a1bd6d631b9.jpg

Train on the lift, one just hitting the brake. Carowinds was cranking out the trains that day, too. At one point, we were dispatched just as the train ahead of us cleared the lift. Dang!

IMG_2131.thumb.jpg.e6f84ec2eb2f899daeda752dce19cc58.jpg

First, we had "fake JB's", now, "fake Chickie's and Pete's", what is this world coming to?!

But unlike Six Flags, while this counter-service Chickie's and Pete's had a limited menu, the quality was still good and the staples were still there.

Also, can you please stop calling them "crabfries"? How f*cking dare you make me always think for a second that I'm going to get crab meat on my fries!? Other people thought this as well. Crinkle fries...they're crinkle fries.

IMG_2132.thumb.jpg.2f3d752e9e2b469a28410c623585bbf8.jpg

Since my last visit, this area of the park was given a little refresh and looks great. I love the "Flying Cobras" reference to the whole North Carolina "First in Flight" mantra

IMG_2136.thumb.jpg.882464d8f2addf2c93f66f343af2a39b.jpg

Fair vibe, never-in-a-million-years Top Scan, string lighting, and fairground-themed food buildings surround the rethemed area

IMG_2138.thumb.jpg.3f6f6b2ab25b3636a12bca9587a051d1.jpg

I'm very excited for the new coaster next year will bring. This is just going to further enhance the awesomeness that is Carowinds. I haven't been keeping up with the thread, but even if this ends up being a more "mild thrill" attraction with some good theming, I'll be happy.

IMG_2139.thumb.jpg.b73e68d37515d37cec3a7d376ccb90b0.jpg

Fun fact: I'm allergic to peanuts. If I'm ever ruler of the world, anyone found in possession of peanuts will be executed.

IMG_2142.thumb.jpg.f06d8e26c0ddba947fdaf2fcfefb1142.jpg

This is one of those B&M inverts that everyone forgets to talk about. I don't even know what it's called half the time. Flight Burn or Thunder Deck or TopGun Hawk idfk. The first half is basically the same as Montu save a little bit of a different direction. The second half is quick and snappy. It's super intense and easily one of the best.

IMG_2150.thumb.jpg.055477d3f4ac57d2366616db9ca02a06.jpg

We gave Intimidator some love. But I'd be lying if I said we wouldn't rather be on Fury.

IMG_2154.thumb.JPG.6e1d85a1cd0226f57d6b1851aed58598.JPG

Still not Twisted Timbers. Maybe try again later.

IMG_2156.thumb.jpg.c07e79be537d8566d12a135284d97474.jpg

A mostly empty station awaited us at Hurler and we gave it a few rides in the back, finding it to still be a pretty smooth and enjoyable ride!

IMG_2157.thumb.jpg.fc4682764a9ebe66d4fac3df6eb9218f.jpg

Wait...what...could it be? No way...

Wait...guys...RMC has wooden pallets at their headquarters, in the loading dock! Holy f*ck! THIS MUST MEAN HURLER IS GOING TO BE TWISTED TIMBERS 2.0!!! Someone call Screamscape and the Carowinds discussion thread!

IMG_2171.thumb.jpg.84e730c473a0d06cb1aa0f1f1530fd47.jpg

We forgot to ride the Vekoma Flyer that day lol. But for real I do actually like these, we just forgot it was there.

IMG_2173.thumb.jpg.5c54686922736d3c30a54475f76b0606.jpg

Aww, that's a cute play on words.

IMG_2174.thumb.jpg.808909a63cab3aeb05252aba7f05e14d.jpg

There are some pretty green areas at Carowinds as well

IMG_2177.thumb.jpg.ad0ac311894b123c968256c3a7f2ab68.jpg

Halloween! Yom Kippur! It was not the 4th of July when we were there...

IMG_2179.thumb.jpg.22bd21d35a591bf416439924f058be05.jpg

Aww, southern things. Bless their little hearts.

Anyways, that was the end of our day at Carowinds! We then proceeded to go check out the bar scene in "Uptown" (weird) Charlotte, and get significantly hammered! Yassss

IMG_2181.thumb.jpg.8a6d53fdcaebd637e33c66e82da8d760.jpg

Having stayed in Charlotte after our night of drinking, there was one last place to check out the following morning.

Mac's Speed Shop, not far from Carowinds, is a fantastic BBQ joint! I discovered it on Yelp a couple of years back and made it a must-visit part of the trip.

IMG_2182.thumb.jpg.b023ddd8d5ae5748dfa64f574bb6eb37.jpg

We were there on a Sunday morning so it was dead, but it's a bar and BBQ restaurant in one

IMG_2183.thumb.jpg.85831736ee0a0bdeaeba44772b7ae459.jpg

A picture of the menu. Rumor has it that some coaster enthusiasts are quite "porktacular" ;)

IMG_2186.thumb.jpg.da948a14fdd170e448b9fa4aea573480.jpg

And a shot of my pulled pork, fries, and mac and cheese, which is not a bad way to cure a hangover! Pile on the carbs, drink more alcohol, and you're good as new!

Next mini trip to come soon, thanks for reading!

Great reports!

I agree 100% on Lightning Rod. That coaster is amazing in every way except for the downtime. Hopefully they can get it straightened out, but this is the third year at this point...

I really like what Carowinds did with the County Fair area.

About two weeks after the previous trip ended, my bestie moved to Atlanta, so of course I made plans to visit her, which brought me right back to

Six Flags over Georgia

For real this time! No weather issues on this visit. And I have to say that I was very impressed with the park on this visit. I had a few visits in the past few years where I encountered some issues, and on this trip it was like the park did a 180, at least for the most part.

Fast operations (mostly), friendly employees, no line jumping, and I honestly was happy that the employees were enforcing policies by saying things like "line jumping will result in being banned from the park", and "taking out your phone on the coaster will result in a 5-year ban"

I know TPR just reported on this park, too, so you've already read about it recently, but I'm happy to second the fact that Twisted Cyclone is AWESOME. When I look at RMC coasters, I see both progression and a sort of "yearly theme", and this year's theme seems to be small, abrupt airtime hills, a low-to-the-ground zero-g roll where an airtime hill used to be, inversions into drops, and a sudden jerk to one side (the abrupt neck-snap right turn on TT and the abrupt left into the brakes here). A lot of elements reminded me a lot of Twisted Timbers, which I rode earlier in the season, and I mean this in every possible good way.

We also had some seriously awesome rides on Goliath. It was a hot day and I didn't make it up there until 5PM, so Goliath was warmed up well and hauling all sorts of ass, feeling fast and full of airtime even after riding Twisted Cyclone. I've been on almost all the B&M hypers warmed up or not, and these rides on Goliath made me think that it's probably the best B&M hyper out there.

Anyway, pictures now

IMG_2266.thumb.jpg.3732dce980b18a9ef7746431d231e14f.jpg

You get a nice view of Batman from Six Flags' pothole-ridden parking lot.

lol, seriously I've never seen a park so badly in need of a re-pave. Gravel lots are smoother.

IMG_2270.thumb.jpg.8597440509900cbcc3bd3bb7ba69664b.jpg

First stop was of course, the fantastical new RMC. I love this wave turn in the back car. You really get ripped through the second half when the front of the train descends.

IMG_2272.thumb.jpg.0c72e90d104dd6ebc86b3667107e858e.jpg

Goliath was running almost in Intamin mode today. We got some great sustained airtime on the return hills and I greyed out in the downward helix every ride.

IMG_2273.thumb.jpg.85f1f6b8839aca24c659b60b7f3ad265.jpg

Dude, the fake JB's trend has got to stop.

IMG_2274.thumb.jpg.225a9000bbddbc3883c6eedb0b9c9413.jpg

I actually thought this one was going to be okay, as I'm a turkey burger fan and it sounded good at the time...

IMG_2276.thumb.jpg.53fd994bce759e1f1139c84c4ac9a506.jpg

This sh*t was f*cking horrible. I promise I'm not just trying to complain for the sake of complaining. I've had store-bought, pre-packaged/pre-cut turkey burgers before. These are not that. This seriously tasted like it was marinated in household cleaner, then left out to dry for two weeks. It had this disgusting chemical taste to it, I took one bite and threw it in the trash, it was so bad.

Please remove this from the menu, Six Flags, or re-visit how to make them.

IMG_2278.thumb.jpg.71a5eb245302bb4cf67a4d0288ffc225.jpg

Dare Devil Diiiiiiiiiveeeee

So, we got in line and then actually skipped this. They were only running two ride vehicles, taking about 3-5 minutes per dispatch, and at 6 passengers per vehicle and about 50-60 people in line, we weren't getting on this any time soon.

IMG_2285.thumb.jpg.41069917664e54cf2a059817bba64160.jpg

So we headed down the hill to the always-good, Mindbender!

IMG_2290.thumb.jpg.c62d262ed3c9d53a6c18c9e08b8bbdad.jpg

Mindbender is famous for being an old Schwarzkopf and doing this whole circular-loopy thingy

IMG_2291.thumb.jpg.f15d1afa946adae91ef267fa12670bac.jpg

And then it has some cool swooping turns over the stream underneath it. I'm more of a fan of Shockwave at 'over Texas because it has way better drops, but this oldie is still a goodie.

IMG_2295.thumb.jpg.bcefe82fd1ee989f915fd3bbae57acb4.jpg

It still feels wrong that I like this.

For real, I ride this every time I go to the park now. They did a great job of making the coaster smooth and the new Vekoma trains are wonderful. It's a really intense coaster with tons of head-choppers, without neck-choppers

No pain here! Fun fact, Vekoma actually used this design to create the SLC layout. So you still have to hate it a little bit, on principle.

Great American Scream Machine looking stunning in the setting sun

I convinced my friend that we can ride in the back car, middle row, as 3-bench PTCs are extremely smooth as long as you ride in a middle row...

IMG_2307.thumb.jpg.2b18729825b1bc111982c89ecec96316.jpg

However, as we entered the station, I had a "what the f*ck?!?" moment. They took away the 3-bench PTC trains it used to run and replaced them with 2-bench trains. Nooooooo how could you do this to us, Six Flags?!

I'm pretty sure these trains came from Cyclone. I asked an employee, but she looked puzzled and thought these were the same trains it's always ran. Mmkay...

Needless to say, we rode in the front.

SFOG also has one of those Justice League dark rides that are pretty cool. We skipped it, as we were time-limited, but we did it at Great America last year and loved it

I've always thought the "forest" area of SFOG is really pretty. The dense wooded area, antique cars, and older rides like balloon race make it stunning

This seems to be a common theme the past few years with parks not operating these or removing them altogether.

Coming back around to the front of the park, we got some different views of Twisted Cyclone, and we gave it a few more rides.

And we decided to end out the night on Goliath, which was still running awesome. I always liked it, but I really have a new-found appreciation for it.

Heading out of the park, Scorcher looks really cool all lit up and makes a lot of B&M noise. I realized that we forgot to ride it, and it's actually one of the best Stand-Up coasters out there

My friend's new place in Midtown Atlanta has some cool city views and a look down at the always-traffic-ridden I-75/I-85 concurrent highway

The next morning, we rented electric scooters through the Bird app, which we rode all the way down the Beltline and to Piedmont Park

IMG_2331.thumb.jpg.7e88637b7af7ab0d3fb2d81db65fd1a6.jpg

Since even looking at your phone while going 20mph on an electric scooter is risking suicide, I only got a few photos. At one end of Piedmont Park, we found a cool brewery where we sat for a bit and took in the view

And then I found the same sign I saw on that person's garage in San Francisco! I need one of these

Noted!

The next morning, we'd have an excellent brunch at a place I forgot the name of

IMG_2341.thumb.jpg.47d449e59498aa942dc00820ed2179d5.jpg

And I end this trip with some french toast. Meow.

I, too, made the unforgivable decision to get the turkey burger because they were... sold out of "salad" to do buffalo chicken salad (it was noon). It was easily the worst theme park food I have taken a bite of. It was gray, it was ...juicy in the most disgusting way imaginable, and I'm certain there was 11% turkey that made up the patty. I happily ate all of the fries that came with it because they hardly had any taste, which I was totally fine with after taking a bite of the turkey burger

Glad we're both still alive. F yeah Twisted Cyclone and I couldn't believe how fun Blue Hawk is now!
