Photo Trip Report - Cedar Point Winter Chill Out 2016

Postby Jantzen73 » Sun Feb 21, 2016 7:11 pm

Just wanted to share my experience at one of the coolest events around - pun intended - Winter Chill Out hosted by Cedar Point. A 6 hour long, off-season tour of the park! Weather was unseasonably warm (and welcome) with that familiar wind whipping off the lake.

This was our 3rd Chill Out and once again the park went above and beyond to provide an amazing, one of a kind experience for enthusiasts. Hats off to the Cedar Point staff that planned, coordinated and volunteered their time for this event. As every penny of the $40k raised went to Give Kids the World. Plus the delicious lunch and cool bag of merchandise was much appreciated.

My personal highlights were getting to see Valravn in person (of course) but I was surprised to see active construction going on! My brain is still getting used to Valravn jutting out into the midway - but I think I’ll adjust :lmao: - especially when everything is complete. Touring the train house was AMAZING! The staff was so friendly and there were so many interesting things to see. Touring the mechanics shop is always a treat - and loved their sense of humor…. Going into the ball room was a huge surprise - I could not believe how gigantic it was up there! And of course Jason McClure and Tony Clark’s presentation was informative and funny. Being in the last group of the day I think they were a little loopy and were really loose and fun!

I’ll let my pictures show you all the cool / neat things that you don’t get to see every day. I’m not good at documenting every little detail - there are others here that do a much better job of that. I just gravitate towards things that grab my eye and try to make them look a little different / interesting...

Thanks for looking!

Waiting to check in at the Season Pass center so checked out Gatekeeper for a few.
IMG_0111.jpg
Hanging out by one of the supports.
IMG_0132.jpg
As the sign says - Tour Start.
IMG_0145.jpg
Raptor looked unbelievable - really striking - though we know the white caps will be back soon.
IMG_0164-HDR.jpg
Hey, what's going on over here?
IMG_0176.jpg
Oh yes - the worlds tallest spiral staircase and fresh looking Top Thrill Dragster.
IMG_0187.jpg
Couldn't of done this if I tried.
IMG_0195-HDR.jpg
Peeking up through Cedar Downs to a couple of B&M's.
IMG_0199.jpg
There's that Immelmann jutting out into the midway.
IMG_0210.jpg
This area is going to be a-buzz with folks watching riders take that first drop.
IMG_0217.jpg
So fresh and so clean.
IMG_0221-HDR-2.jpg
That Immelmann seems more of a signature to Valravn then the 90 degree first drop.
IMG_0234-HDR.jpg
More Immelmann.
IMG_0241.jpg
Who wants to have to walk down the MCBR staircase? I do.
IMG_0243.jpg
Another look at that first drop.
IMG_0244.jpg
Coaster to be continued.
IMG_0246-HDR.jpg
About 80% done they told us.
IMG_0252-HDR.jpg
Looks like a Rollercoaster Tycoon creation.
IMG_0255-HDR.jpg
Last one - see you in early May!
IMG_0276-HDR.jpg
The train shop tour was definitely unique.
IMG_0283.jpg
Just incredible machines to see up close.
IMG_0290.jpg
I think this work shop has been here since 1870 - so many tools - old and new.
IMG_0293.jpg
That's a lot of iron and steel.
IMG_0304.jpg
You can tell the price that Cedar Point takes in the care for their trains.
IMG_0309.jpg
Even the office was as you would expect.
IMG_0317.jpg
Those hats have seen some soot.
IMG_0319.jpg
This guy escape from Boneville?
IMG_0324.jpg
One's mans trash is another mans, uh shelf?
IMG_0325.jpg
They don't make them like this anymore.
IMG_0334.jpg
Now that's old school.
IMG_0337.jpg
Trains and coasters - amusement park staples.
IMG_0341.jpg
Remain seated until the train comes to a complete and final stop.
IMG_0345.jpg
I got a kick out of how they huddled and stored the trash cans throughout the park.
IMG_0347.jpg
This a view you'd only want in the off-season.
IMG_0349.jpg
Guess those wheels are fully cured.
IMG_0354-HDR.jpg
Banana boat all ready to be put back into service.
IMG_0358.jpg
Red train ready to go.
IMG_0364.jpg
Couple of airtime hills.
IMG_0365.jpg
Trail Tavern all boarded up for the winter.
IMG_0368.jpg
This seemed appropriate.
IMG_0369.jpg
Maybe they can move the water cannons to Valravn to give everyone their splashdown.
IMG_0370.jpg
Is this the future how of Rip Cord or something else?
IMG_0372.jpg
Pond is drained and the barn is empty.
IMG_0375.jpg
I'd like to think those things which will not be named are suffering under all that wrap.
IMG_0376.jpg
I've been in that building exactly one time.
IMG_0378.jpg
Family dryer looking more like a shack of horrors.
IMG_0385-HDR.jpg
Rest up Maverick - it's going to be another long season.
IMG_0388.jpg
Everyone was quite alarmed by the state of the off-season look of the swings.
IMG_0389.jpg
Seems like a good place to park this.
IMG_0392.jpg
Mine Ride getting some new wood.
IMG_0393.jpg
Some more Mine Ride.
IMG_0394.jpg
Think this will get the Virtual Reality treatment soon?
IMG_0395.jpg
No carp eating dog food today.
IMG_0396.jpg
Seems like an abandoned town.
IMG_0397.jpg
I pick can number 3.
IMG_0403.jpg
Coasters are just laying everywhere.
IMG_0409.jpg
Are they building a bon fire for Meanstreak?
IMG_0417.jpg
BEST DAY and some carousel horses.
IMG_0429.jpg
I think they sell a latex mask of this.
IMG_0424.jpg
Now he's awake!
IMG_0423.jpg
I wanted to press that button... so bad.
IMG_0433.jpg
Yes, yes indeed.
IMG_0446-HDR.jpg
Snoopy watch Boneville is behind you!
IMG_0440.jpg
Yes there was a red fat person belt.
IMG_0454.jpg
The star of the show today.
IMG_0458.jpg
Step right up and go straight down.
IMG_0459.jpg
Another sign in the sign shop.
IMG_0466-HDR.jpg
Hello there sunshine.
IMG_0471.jpg
Walking back to one of the mechanics shops.
IMG_0472.jpg
I was surprised to see such a new vehicle - most are from the late 80's.
IMG_0473.jpg
So that's where the Chick-fil-a mailbox went.
IMG_0478.jpg
More fresh wheels!
IMG_0479.jpg
Certified fresh.
IMG_0481-HDR.jpg
It is such a cool experience to be able to walk around parts of the shop.
IMG_0516.jpg
I needed bigger pockets...
IMG_0525-HDR.jpg
They look so strange just sitting around off the track.
IMG_0537.jpg
At least they didn't write Wash Me.
IMG_0545-HDR.jpg
Some more Maverick cars in the LakeSide Pavilion.
IMG_0552-HDR.jpg
Maverick glamour shot.
IMG_0555.jpg
Dragster in pieces.
IMG_0559-2.jpg
Neat to see what's underneath all that fiberglass.
IMG_0563.jpg
I box of fresh Dragster seats!
IMG_0570.jpg
We got a history lesson on Hotel Breakers.
IMG_0577.jpg
It was a little creepy with just natural lighting in the lobby.
IMG_0581-HDR.jpg
Kinda had that Shining vibe going.
IMG_0605.jpg
The Giant Wheel lost some weight!
IMG_0614-HDR.jpg
Now this was cool - though it was a old and creepy as you would expect.
IMG_0626-HDR.jpg
My tour guide hated me - I was always the last to leave.
IMG_0635-HDR.jpg
Taking a look out the other side.
IMG_0642-HDR.jpg
It has charm and the ugliest paint I've ever seen.
IMG_0664-HDR.jpg
And that concludes our tour.
IMG_0681.jpg
It was nice - so head over to Battery Park - just the moon light and misc lighting of the park.
IMG_0703.jpg
Here's a shot of the whole peninsula.
IMG_0706-HDR.jpg
Went over in the AM too - though lots of gray skies this morning.
IMG_0716-HDR.jpg
It's a lot nicer in the summer time.
IMG_0785-HDR.jpg
Another look at the new skyline.
IMG_0839-HDR.jpg
The sun finally made it above the cloud cover.
IMG_0812-HDR.jpg
See you in the spring!
IMG_0742-HDR.jpg
Bonus shot for the seagull fans.

These pictures were excellent! Thank you for taking the time to capture the essence of the offseason and providing wonderfully composed photos. Maybe next year I'll get the chance to attend this event!

Awesome photos as always...thank you for posting.

I really liked the bonus ballroom shots - it's in such better shape than I had ever imagined. I personally think that it would be a cool place to move the museum, wouldn't it?

Next year, I think that we are going to plan on doing this tour. I got my dates mixed up as I thought that it was next weekend which is when we'll be in Aruba. Bummed that we could have gone to this and didn't!

I don't think I've ever seen a picture of yours that I didn't stop myself just to admire for a minute. You've also been the creator of more than a few of my screensavers and wallpapers ;)

Thanks for the report.

Far and away the most interesting trip report of a non-operational park I've ever seen!

And as much as I love the gull in front of the Valravn lift, the available light shots inside Hotel Breakers are my favorites.

Thanks for sharing!

Chiming in to say that I as well pause at each of your shots. The angles and lighting you highlight are remarkable. Thanks for sharing!! Wish I could take pics half as good as you! Part of the problem is my lenses always get scratched, guess I'm just absent-minded like that. Do you do much photo editing once home?

Come one. Come all. Ride the roller coaster in my pants.

Great report!! The operators will probably play rock, paper, scissors to see who has the pleasure of walking to the MCBR to do Set-Up testing every morning... ;)
