Photo TR: Road Trip w/ Garbles! Journey along I-10!

Postby Jakizle » Mon Sep 02, 2013 6:04 pm

This past weekend I was moving from Orlando to Texas for the fall semester, so I was finally able to hit up some rare parks long the Gulf Coast/I-10 and get 6 new coasters! I'll just go ahead and move along to the pictures to tell the journey! All photos are iPhone so excuse the quality.

Here is a POV of Cannonball Run, a rarely seen CCI coaster!

-Garbles
IMG_1584.jpg
First leg of the journey! Orlando to Gulf Shores Alabama.
IMG_1589.JPG
The stretch of I-10 along the Florida panhandle is the most boring 300 mile stretch of highway on Earth. However this sign for Buc-ees outside Tallahassee is hilarious! And only like 15 minutes from my exit in Texas.
IMG_1591.JPG
Approaching the Florida-Alabama border along the gulf.
IMG_1592.JPG
Welcome to Gulf Shores, Alabama.
IMG_1593.JPG
ooh look, a roller coaster!
IMG_1594.JPG
But why is no one here???
IMG_1596.JPG
At least it looks nice...
IMG_1597.JPG
After finding 7 park staff inside, the sold me a ticket and I walked up and over the station to find the ride entrance.
IMG_1598.JPG
The waterpark was closed on Friday, so the park was empty.
IMG_1599.JPG
I was literally the only paying guest inside the park.
IMG_1600.JPG
The ride itself was okay. It's an older CCI so I didn't expect much anyways. A little shaky but overall smooth and kinda floaty.
IMG_1601.JPG
Looking back towards the lift and empty parking lot. Anyways yay for coaster #525!
IMG_1604.JPG
Just outside Gulf Shores, on the road back to I-10, is the third Lambert's Cafe! (The other two are in MO and always featured on TPR trips!)
IMG_1605.JPG
The rolls are magical. And they throw them at you.
IMG_1606.JPG
I went for plain chicken fried stake with corn and peaches and grabbed some of the walk-around fried okra! Yum!
IMG_1607.JPG
Approaching Mobile Alabama, which would be my stop for the night.
IMG_1618.JPG
The next morning, I hopped back on I-10 to continue east. What is that in the distance?
IMG_1619.JPG
Hey looks, it's abandoned Six Flags New Orleans!
IMG_1623.JPG
Of course I had to exit. I like how there is still a road sign.
IMG_1626.JPG
Park entrance is all closed up. Amazing how the sign letters are still there 8 years later.
IMG_1627.JPG
Culture credit? lol
IMG_1629.JPG
The bus entrance on the side has weathered a little bit better.
IMG_1631.JPG
This gate gives the best view of the abandoned park inside.
IMG_1632.JPG
And the third and final gate appears to be the access point for the company responsible for the property. Maybe I should call these guys for a tour on my way back...
IMG_1633.JPG
And I think this is where all of those sneaky people have entered.
IMG_1636.JPG
Anyways, moving on to New Orleans!
IMG_1638.JPG
I stopped in the French Quarter and this is the first thing I saw.
IMG_1640.JPG
Culture credit #2. I don't even know what this is.
IMG_1641.JPG
My mom told me to stop at Cafe Du Monde, so I did!
IMG_1644.JPG
For 2.65, you get this magical bag filled with 3...
IMG_1645.JPG
...yummy beignets! Can't go wrong with friend dough and powdered sugar.
IMG_1648.JPG
The culture around the French Quarter is just amazing. Brass players and voodoo crap everywhere. Wanna get your palm read? Go here!
IMG_1651.JPG
Bourbon Street was getting ready for the gay Mardi Gras (little did I know)
IMG_1653.JPG
Good to know!
IMG_1656.JPG
Looking down Bourbon St. towards down town. It was early so it wasn't busy yet.
IMG_1658.JPG
However it started to get busier around lunch so I got the heck out. If you look close enough there are even rainbow boobs in the background ;)
IMG_1660.JPG
Next stop was Dixie Landin' and Blue Bayou in Baton Rouge! This park has a weird schedule and I've missed it every time during the drive.
IMG_1661.JPG
You park across the street and take this bridge to the park.
IMG_1664.JPG
View of the park from the bridge.
IMG_1665.JPG
First coaster at the bottom is Roco Loco, which came from California.
IMG_1668.JPG
It is one of the larger Miler coasters. I was also the only person riding!
IMG_1667.JPG
The park's shot tower has a nice theme.
IMG_1669.JPG
2nd coaster was the spinner, XTREM. It is the one that killed a woman, so they only allow people per car and you must ride as 2. No single riders allowed. So I had to borrow a swamp creature for my ride.
IMG_1670.JPG
Boomerang wasn't open yet (the park opened at 2 and this was taken at 2:30pm)
IMG_1676.JPG
But a few minutes later I was let on!
IMG_1678.JPG
I do like Boomerangs that let you drop inside a tight hole.
IMG_1679.JPG
View of the spinner and flats from above.
IMG_1685.JPG
As much as Boomerangs can suck, this one was actually really good.
IMG_1686.JPG
Just a friendly reminder...the park's clientel was pretty awful.
IMG_1687.JPG
The waterpark is the big draw here, and it's pretty nice.
IMG_1688.JPG
They even have 4 of the "looping" water slides!
IMG_1689.JPG
The Galaxy was closed still, but I decided to wait it out. Mechanics finally showed up around 3:30pm.
IMG_1690.JPG
Is that an operator coming???
IMG_1692.JPG
Success! After waiting 90 minutes (I know, I'm a loser) the Galaxy finally opened around 5pm.
IMG_1693.JPG
This was actually really fun! My favorite ride in the park. It ran great!
IMG_1695.JPG
View from the Galaxy. This was a very interesting park, but glad I finally got the 4 credits!
IMG_1697.JPG
I then made the 4.5 hour drive from Baton Rouge to the Houston area. I had to pass by Kemah, so I stopped for a ride on Boardwalk Bullet.
IMG_1699.JPG
It was running really good actually! Gotta give the park some credit.
IMG_1701.JPG
With 2 trains, there was no line on this Saturday night (max 2 train wait)
IMG_1702.JPG
This is definitely a back seat ride.
IMG_1707.JPG
And fast forward another 30 minutes...and I arrived at Galveston Historic Pleasure Pier!
IMG_1709.JPG
The park looks incredible at night!
IMG_1710.JPG
Time for Iron Shark.
IMG_1711.JPG
The first drop was OMFG amazing. Especially with only lapbars. I was flying out ;)
IMG_1713.JPG
The ride is really twisty.
IMG_1716.JPG
And had no line, even though it was Saturday and the pier was packed. They were running 2 cars.
IMG_1717.JPG
Love how it hangs over the pier.
IMG_1723.JPG
The "loop" at the end is very strange! But a cool way to fly into the brakes.
IMG_1725.JPG
View of Galveston from the pier. This place has come a long way since Hurricane Ike destroyed it.
IMG_1730.JPG
Iron Shark overview.
IMG_1731.JPG
I heard the star flyer was terrifying, but after driving all day I was super tired and wanted to get to my hotel.
IMG_1735.JPG
...but I went for one more ride on Iron Shark.
IMG_1736.JPG
It really was really good. But I guess some of the trains can be bad?
IMG_1744.JPG
Anyways, goodbye Pleasure Pier!
IMG_1800.JPG
Fast forward another 200 miles and I have finally made it to San Antonio!
IMG_1801.JPG
Iron Rattler is back open, so of course I had to come ride it.
IMG_1802.JPG
A slight bummer to see one of the trains with the back car out of service.
IMG_1803.JPG
View of the ride from the station.
IMG_1804.JPG
New signs about the requirements for fitting on the ride.
IMG_1806.JPG
It is running pretty quick!
IMG_1807.JPG
While I much prefer Outlaw Run and NTAG, you still can't deny how unique this coaster is.
IMG_1811.JPG
Cool angle of the barrel roll.
IMG_1812.JPG
A train of riders goes screaming down the drop! Best part of the ride.
IMG_1814.JPG
And one last shot. Good ending to a great little trip!
IMG_1823.JPG
And I finally made it home in Texas to see my family and dogs. Hooray! Thanks for reading and post comments :)

You can get beignets at Kemah Boardwalk, also.

I hated the drive from I-10 down to Gulf Shores.

Yeah, it sucks going through all those towns. It's why I never made the trip down before because I was always with my dad and no way he was putting up with that. The worse part was going from 110 in Pensacola to Gulf Shores, though. Luckily I didn't hit any traffic this entire trip though even with it being Labor Day weekend. The gulf shore was deserted...

They were all in Atlanta. Alabama was there playing football. ;)

Great TR, Jake! Nice to see those old nostalgic coasters! I wish I had the chance to ride Iron Rattler, but I think we rode the better RMC some weeks ago ;) Have a good start!

Don't make me kick you in the donkey!

Nice TR of I-10. Iron Shark looks really nice at night.

The stretch of I-10 along the Florida panhandle is the most boring 300 mile stretch of highway on Earth.

I can name a 300 mile stretch of I-5 in Central California that probably has this beat. ;)

Thanks for sharing all the credit whoring Jake. At least you finally knocked these parks off your list and won't have to do it again. Now to find some beignets after seeing your photos of them.
