Astroworld TR, October 2005

Recommended Posts

Since the Texas Cyclone thread was brought back to the surface and I was asked if I had any more Astroworld pics, I wanted to put together this TR for you.

When i heard the park was closing, I said to myself: "Self, you need to get down there, many of these rides may never operate again" So the wife and I flew down to Texas and did the 18-flags over Texas and Sea World from Friday to Monday in October of 2005.

Now, since we were limited on time, Astroworld was done on a Friday and they opened at 6pm since it was their fright fest, so I have very few photos of the park in the light, which I regret. In hindsight, I should have stayed two days to soak it all in, but since we also hit SFoT, Sea World and Fiesta Texas, we were limited. I regretted that for years until they made-over Rattler and Texas Giant, and since I haven't been able to get back down there, I can say I'm happy to have gotten the Rattler and Texas Giant non-RMC credits now.

Some of the photos are mediocre, as my old 3.2 megapixel camera wasn't great.

Now, onto the photos....

those ghost decorations remained there after the park was being torn down

I was disappointed. I've been on quite a few SLC's and this one was one of the rougher ones.

I skipped this because I knew it was going to be relocated, but missed it at New England... crap.

This was fun. By then it was almost ptch dark so it was great in the dark. Sadly, I only rode it forward as the line got too long

Nice pictures of Six Flags Astroworld, I blame Six Flags' finical issues at the time for the closure of Six Flags Astroworld and the sale of some of its parks (*coughs* Darien Lake). I wonder what Six Flags Astroworld would have been like if it never had closed forever?

I love these photos. I wish I was tall enough to go on these rides. 2 comments:

There is one more Sky-Swat operating: at Thorpe Park as Slammer

I just noticed this now. I visited SFOG last year and rode Georgia Scorcher. The safety harness on Batman looks different

Thanks for the pics!

Thank you for liking them, as well as the other comments on here. The restraints on Batman are different, because Batman was an Intamin, though B&M I think were working there at the time before going on their own. (I don't really know the whole history story).

Glad there is one more Sky Swat in the world. I had forgotten about that.

So, by the looks of the picture of the car (with that awkward moment LOL) I'm guessing that one side of the harness stayed stationary while the other is size adjustable, right?

Edit: and it looks like a B&M ride because of the track, really is it an Intamin?

You are correct about the restraint, look at the open restraints in this picture and you can see how they work.

http://rcdb.com/189.htm#p=54982

And yes, it's an Intamin.

And maybe a Tony Hawk's Big Spin/Pandemonium spinning coaster in 2007/2008 as well!

^ It is quite surprising considering Houston is one of the largest cities in America, so it's not like they don't have the population to support one.

But it does sound like they are on their way to getting a new park built...sure hope it comes to fruition!

I remember really liking Astroworld on my only visit back in the day, I think it was in 1997 because Excalibur was still operating at that point. It had a lot of charm in the themeing (where there was themeing), and although none of the coasters are exceptional they had a pretty eclectic collection of semi-exotic rides for a nerd like me at that time. The Ultra Twister, and Schwarkopf shuttle loop, the stand up which I remember really fun when it was still smooth, the indoor themeed Vekoma thing, and XLR-8 were all fairly unique rides for their time.

Oh and I forgot about Dungeon Drop which I think is still one of my favorite drop rides I've been on. I love those 2nd gen Intamin drop towers and I remember that being one of the taller ones around at the time (230 feet tall or something?). I still prefer the single 4 person cars to the larger gyro drop 40 person rings, but that may change when I ride Falcons Fury.
