verticalzero
The Zippin Pippin, the most prominent and historic ride at Libertyland, sold for $2,500 today at public auction. The historic roller coaster, reportedly Elvis Presley's favorite ride, had been in operation since 1923. It was among an estimated 100 items Mid-South Fair officials put up for auction Wednesday as they prepare to close the park and sell off the assets to recoup losses. This guy bought the coaster: http://commercialappeal.com/mca/local/article/0,2845,MCA_25340_4792650,00.html
Jon Sabo
It is always unfortunate to see a rollercoaster get the ax. Hopefully someone will have the funds and land to rebuild the classic ride.
BeemerBoy
I'm curious, is the ride still standing, or has it already been dismantled?
woah_killa
It's probably still standing, it said in the article they had to find out how to dismantle it. Shame it has to go, I really liked this roller coaster. (rode it 3 times)
BeemerBoy
But it held little value for most buyers, because of the logistical nightmare of removing the ride, re-assembling it elsewhere and keeping it running. Not to break balls or anything, but unless I'm braindead and read right over something else, this could mean it's actually already dismantled, and simply waiting to be hauled off. Anyone else know what state it's in?
CoasterFanatic
It is still standing.
BeemerBoy
Thank you, Ted. Yes, that does present quite a problem then. Amazing that ACE couldn't do more about this sad situation. I guess building a museum to remember it when it's gone was more important? Perhaps I'm wrong on that one? Just my two cents I guess.
ParkTrips
lol. oh, and.. Anyone else know what state it's in? Tennessee, duh!!
coasterbilly
well the guys said they only wanted a car from it, they said they could work a deal if someone had interest in the entire coaster, so their's still some hope i believe
cgodsey
ACE is trying to work with the buyer to preserve the coaster, but to move the coaster and rebuild it, we are talking at LEAST a million dollars. Unfortunately, I don't think it has a chance. Its a sad day here in Memphis... Chris
CoasterFanatic
^ Correct. I got a message from Matt Crowther today and they are working with the buyer and the Save Libertyland group to try and get an extension on the move date. Funny that the buyer was the bass player of the Mavericks. Those guys rule!
BeemerBoy
lol. oh, and.. Anyone else know what state it's in? Tennessee, duh!! Why did I just know you'd jump all over that opportunity?
coasterdude5
Yeah the ride is still standing and denise and everyone with Save Libertyland are working with the guy to keep it in memphis. (I'm sure that's already been said)
ECZenith
Well, that's good news I guess. My brother went to the 311 Day show in memphis and just saw the place sitting there collecting dust. Very sad.
coasterdude5
Now they want to keep the coaster there or move it and build a new park around it. I think they're looking into T-Rex to do that.
