DBru Posted December 12, 2013 Share Posted December 12, 2013 Kennywood is also the only park in the world that has 2 coasters with their largest drop the last drop, and 4 coasters where the largest drop is NOT the first drop. (I hope that is right!) Thunderbolt and Jack Rabbit both have their largest drop is the last drop. Phantom's Revenge's and Racer's largest drop is it's second. rcdude Posted December 12, 2013 Share Posted December 12, 2013 In 1978, Six Flags Great America (then Marriott's Great America) installed a Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loop named Tidal Wave. The ride operated until 1991, then was sent to Six Flags Over Georgia where it ran as Viper from 1995 to 2001 before finally ending up at (Six Flags) Kentucky Kingdom in 2003, where it operated as Greezed Lightnin'. One year before, California's Great America (then Marriott's Great America) had installed a Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loop named Tidal Wave. The ride ran under that name until 1998, when it was renamed to Greased Lightnin'. The ride was removed in 2002 and sent to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, where it sat in storage until 2006 before vanishing. What happened to Greased Lightnin'? It was used to rebuild Greezed Lightnin'. In essence, two twin coasters that had been separated were reunited to form one ride (that sadly is no longer around). It was originally supposed to follow the terrain in a similar way as the Jack Rabbit. The incorrect surveying caused it to be almost twice as expensive as originally planned. coasterkyle Posted December 13, 2013 Share Posted December 13, 2013 Magnum's 3rd hill was modified after it was causing people to hit their heads on the grab bars. It also had brass pads as upstops until a train valleyed in the pretzel turnaround and were replaced with wheel upstops. Gemini also has gone through some modifications one of the horseshoe turns ( I believe the one above the station had to be lowered ) as well as the 2nd hill. It used to run 6 trains up until 2002, and it is the only coaster in the park that is ran manually where the ride host stop the trains themselves in the station. When Dragster opened the trains only had 4 cars till about the end of May, early June and had the engine/fins/wheels on the back until mid to late June of '03 it was replace with a row of seats. Gatekeeper's station/ lift hill is the spot of 5 other coasters that used to stand there ( Figure 8 Racer, Cyclone, Wildcat, Jumbo Jet, Avalanche Run/ Disaster Transport) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Montu was originally not going to be inverted, and was supposed to be housed inside a pyramid. (So glad they went with inverted.) Busch Gardens calls the below ground elements "pits". Busch Garden's Tidal Wave travels the former Jungle Cruise channel. Sand Serpent was relocated from Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Python was Florida's first looping roller coaster. BGT and immediate surroundings are situated on an old airport landing strip. (Google map it) Part of the runway is still there. The lot across the street from Adventure Island to the north, where they stage new attraction parts. This photo is facing southwest. So BGT is the big square area in the top of the photo just to the left of the runway. This photo is the north side of BGT with AI to the right, and the area just north of the parks. Current Google images show 3 places of visible runway, and one place of recycled repaved runway. The recycled part is now a parking lot to a business. Looking at Google maps, if you start at the intersection of Bougainvillea and McKinley and go north, look to the left. There is a triangle shaped parking lot. Next to a field. Don't forget the one at SFNE which was never a Big Spin. It was always "Pandemonium" though it opened as "Mr. Six's Pandemonium" and had a cutout of Mr. Six on it. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks they re-themed the ride to reflect the Columbia and Discovery Space Shuttles. The park did not change the names after the 2003 Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. If you look at the original plans, the park was supposed to be a full-on destination resort with multiple parks and shopping areas. The plans were downsized to the current park we see now. - The park was originally planned to receive a Tatsu-style flyer, but the water table underneath the proposed site wouldn't allow for deep supports. - One of the main reasons the park builds on the parking lot/site of former rides is because the township doesn't like the park removing trees. The park had to fight to make exceptions to the rule (Nitro). This actually may be one of the reasons Rolling Thunder and GASM were removed. - Both Great American Scream Machines were built as the tallest fastest roller coaster in the world. The Alton Mouse was supposed to be used for this ride, but they decided to place it at Idlewild instead. It wasn't until Crazy Mouse at Dinosaur Beach opened that Kennywood found another interesting wild mouse design. Kennywood executives went to the park and rode it with a blindfold on to see how it would be in the dark. They finally purchased the Reverchon mouse that is there currently. I'm not sure.. maybe someone else knows? However, if you watch an POV from ~2001, compared to a newer POV, it's easily noticeable. Fact the Backlot Stunt Coasters at KI, KD, and CW were originally designed to be able to drift sideways. Wasn't it only the rear car that was designed to have this fishtail effect? Anyone know more?
